How to move all tracks to laptop with covers
« on: May 31, 2003, 03:21:12 pm »

I'm trying to load all my music onto my laptop to take around with me. I keep all my cover art in one directory. Under MJ8, I could do it this way:
1: Copy all the mp3's to the laptop
2: Copy the cover art directory to the laptop
3: Import the tracks to MJ on the laptop. The cover art would all point at the old location.
4: Do Find and Replace on all tracks to change the cover art paths to the new location.

When I try to do the same thing under MC9, the import  locates the images that have exactly the right name (ARTIST - ALBUM.jpg) but that only covers about half my files. The rest have blank Image File fields. Even if they weren't blank, Image File is not a listed field under Find and Replace.

On a related note, can I change a track's filename in MC9 and have it update the database, but not move the file? This used to be an option in MJ8, but I can't see how to do it in MC9.

if you wish to move the file you need to use Rename, then check [X] dir and fill in the mask

if not uncheck it.

about the cover art, look and see if the artist name and album on the files that do not have cover art are the same.

if you have renamed or changed the fields "Artist Name" And "Album Name" in any way, MC9 may not find coverart for the files, and this is normaly the problem as long as the path to the cover art is corect in MC9

But what do I do if I want to change the filename that's stored in the database, but not move the file?

The reason MC9 isn't finding the images is usually the difference between "and" and "&" or something. I can fix them, but it's over 1000 files and I've already done it on my server. It's just annoying that there's no way of moving that info around

you can do a find and replace of all selected files for "And" or "&" within seconds.

like I said this is due to some of the tags being changed after the art was found.

Alternatively, I guess you could rename some cover art to match the file name's 'Artist' & 'Album' tags,
but that sounds too much like work.

Have you tried "Cover Art --> Quick FInd in Cover art Directory" ?

Tried that, but it still needs an exact match for "ARTIST - ALBUM.jpg"

It seems like MC doesn't store the path of the cover art in the tags any more. It would be nice if it at least stored the filename, so when it reimports a file, it could see if there was a file matching that name in the cover art folder.
