syncing to iPods, can't see synced music
« on: October 18, 2018, 11:31:47 pm »

New JRiver user here. Finally taking the plunge and hoping this is my ticket to getting rid of Windows forever, have had to keep it for iPod syncing for a few years now.

Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia 64
JRiver MCE 24.0.52 (64)
MCE wasn't registered when I originally did the sync but it is now.

After a few initial fails I managed to get my iPods to sync, a 80GB classic and a 4GB nano. I first reset them in iTunes on windows to be like new. They synced very nicely with JRiver but nothing will read the music. I can't browse any songs when I am looking at it, a dock and my car both can't see anything either. I followed a guide I found on here to get it to work but couldn't find anything about my issue. I can see all the synced files in MCE on my device and I can see artist name directorys in the root directory in a file explorer which seems unusual to me but I don't know what is normal yet to know if that is the issue. Maybe I have to set a more specific path?

They are the same files that sync quite happily using iTunes.

Now I did a test, for the first time ever I tried to sync a file to my iPod using Rhythmbox. To my surprise it worked first time and the ipod could see and use the file. This possibly shows why the JRiver synced files are not working. You can see in the screenshots that Rhythmbox syncs the file to the iPod_Control/Music folder in a coded folder, whereas JRiver puts in in the root directory using the artist/album structure by default.

I'll need to grab a classic from home to test it.
You do need to have iPod support enabled in Options->General->Feature Support

Thanks for the reply. I'll need to check to see if that code is functional in the non-windows builds.
It will likely take a couple of days to get to it.

It looks like the code for accessing the iPods database in MC is Windows only.
It might get updated in the future but it's a pretty large change...

Thanks for looking into it. Looks like I have to keep windows running for now then. Fingers crossed for an upgrade because I like everything else about MC.

Hi Bob and others

I tried with the iPod Video 30 GB and it does NOT work on Windows and MC (version 26, did a Trial installation on a VM). I know this thread is about 24, but I'd like to resume this one. Note that the iPod was factory reset via iTunes on the same Windows node.

Find attached two screenshots of a general fault message as well as the aforementioned "iPod_Control" folder, which remains unused by MC (MC puts everything flat in the root).

What was the full version of MC26?  Did you read the instructions on the forum?
