Windows 10 Unstable
« on: December 04, 2018, 06:42:32 pm »

In JRiver Media Center 24.0.65 (since 64), playing songs will fail, then Windows 10 crashes.

reproduce

1. Play songs (for now, there is no regularity, but it is often found in m4a files ripped in old times)
2. The dialog "Something went wrong with playback." Appears and the cover art disappears.
3. The entire OS becomes unstable, there is no response to the key operation, it hangs up as it is.

Up to JRiver Media Center 24.0.60, it was able to be used normally.
Currently, I turn off automatic update and use it.

That's probably a driver bug.

What are you using for antivirus software?

Driver? What kind of driver? DAC? Windows?

Since we collected logs when playback failed in the corresponding version, we will attach it.

After that, I stopped Norton Security's firewall and tried it again, but the situation did not change.

Uninstall Norton.  Stopping it may not be enough.

Can JRiver and norton live together?

I think that Norton is popular security software commonly used.
But, in order to use JRiver, are you saying to uninstall Notron?

That's hard. I would like somehow to be able to live together.
If I can not do that, I will return to dislike iTunes.

Can JRiver and norton live together?

Yes, MC and Norton Security can coexist just fine. I use exactly the same version as you and only occasionally have issues with Norton, usually after an update, or a Windows update.

Jim's suggestion to uninstall Norton is just to test if the problem goes away. Also, if it does go away, when you reinstall Norton it will sometimes detect existing programs and correct any bad settings for them.

If the problem goes away, reinstall Norton and see if it stays away. If not, tell Norton not to interfere with MC, particularly the Firewall, but also the Anti-virus. Make sure Norton is not in Silent Mode, as you need to see messages it generates and take proper action, such as allowing MC components to download or run when required.

Of course, it could also be that some of your m4a files are triggering the Anti-virus. Shouldn't happen, but could be. Scan the files with Norton and confirm no messages.

RoderickGI, Thank you for your advice.

I tried the following.

1. Uninstall Norton Security
2. Uninstall JRiver Media Center
-- reboot --
3. Install JRiver Media Center 24.0.65
4. Start JRiver Media Center
5. I got the cover art all over again

continue, I tried playing the song that was problematic again, but the result did not change. (display JRiver something went wrong with playback)

from these things, I think that Norton Security is not directly related to this problem.
I guess. I think that the songs that JRiver acquired cover art from the Internet is a matter of concern.

Just to be sure, I will attach the log again.

Regards Thak you.

Before installing JRiver, I uninstalled Norton Security, rebooted the OS and installed JRiver again.
However, I still failed to play the song.

Since security software warnings and logs are not recorded (of course not in silent mode), I think that this case is not related to security software.

I had a similar problem with a few songs(large files>500mb). I was loading the file into memory for playback. I started playing from disk and have had no reoccurrence.

Worth a try?

Thank you for your reply.

In my case, all the files that failed to play are small ones of 10 MB.

Jazz Giant /Tempus Fugit.m4a 8,646,402 bytes (8.6 MB)
The Bud Powell Trio /I'll Remember April.m4a 9,080,274 byte (9.1 MB)
:
etc...

Even those larger than these files have been successfully played. I think that it is not caused by memory playback.
Currently I am at work, so I will try it when I return home.

But what's mysterious is that even though you are using the same settings and the same file, 24.0.60 is playing without problems.

JRiver Media Center 24.0.60 -> okay
:
JRiver Media Center 24.0.64 -> failed
JRiver Media Center 24.0.65 -> failed

....nmmm

We made some changes to MP4/M4A handling recently, maybe that broke something?
Can you share a file that causes the problems?

I appreciate your reply.

I would like to attach the file (m4a) which is a problem, but it is impossible to exceed the size limit (1.2 MB) of the attachment of this forum.

If I edit the file and shorten it, it will already be a different file.

To share large files, upload them to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or similar, and share a link to them with Hendrik.

Also, don't forget that once Norton was uninstalled, Windows Defender would have been activated. So there still could be a security issue.

I shared the problem file (m4a) with Google Drive.

01 Tempus Fugit.m4a
URL: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1R0Wp1Mstjf04PR8i9dHU5a6AmhJtTvPl

I will delete it in a few hours, so please take a look.

Please note that this file is copied to the Mac in the workplace and is strictly a copy of the file causing the problem.

If copied ones are useless, return to home and share.

I've downloaded the file, and I can reproduce the issue playing that file. I've forwarded the issue to the developer working on the MP4 changes. We'll get it resolved soon. Thanks for reporting!

Hendrik.  I appreciate the polite response.

It seemed unrelated to Security Software, it was good.
I am looking forward to being corrected.

Regards. Thank you.
