Adjustment for DSD gain to match my PCM files?
« on: December 30, 2018, 11:58:53 am »

How might I adjust settings in 21.0.92 to boost DSD volume output so it closely matches PCM volume output?

Would buy Mac build optimized for music playback only. Don't need or want full build with video functions.

Yes I know, it's called Media Center not Music Center (:

I'll move this to the correct forum section.

One thing to make note of is if you're bitstreaming DSD, volume (both internal volume and system volume) should be set at 100% or else you may encounter issues. Also worth mentioning (which is probably the bit that interests you) is that if you're using DSD bitstreaming, using DSP isn't possible either so things like volume leveling and peak level normalizing won't work like it will with PCM files.

As for a version for music only without the "bells and whistles" simply enable Audio Only Mode by going to View menu > Audio Only Mode but I'm not sure if that's in MC21 though. In addition you can open MC's Options > General > Features and uncheck the features you don't use in MC.

Have used JRiver for many years, first Windows versions, then Mac version. I've tweaked my JR interface to as best I can over the years. Have used Audio only mode and unchecked all features I don't use since purchasing. Will double check volume for bitstreaming set at 100%. I still see lots of things in menu though and assumed they cannot be removed. The new remote for JR Mac looks interesting, but never been fan of ongoing subscription models. A few friends have pushed me to drop JR for Roon, but as slick as Roon is - it's not for me. Some say JR interface looks outdated. I like it. Don't care for extensive artist information splayed out in interface. JR functions best for me. I still don't know how to, by default, have DSD volume match my PCM file volume though.

Funny I'm shown as new member. Been on and off forum here for long time. Been using JR for ages. With a different user name and email before BG though. Move around a lot (or used to). Ten states/three countries abroad. Not anymore though. Too old for that now.

1. Do not bit-stream DSD - have Media Center convert it to PCM.
2. Analyze all tracks in your library. This may take some time if they were not analyzed on import.
3. Enable Volume Leveling DSP and ensure that Adaptive Volume is disabled.
