New user 3D help
« on: December 30, 2018, 01:00:27 pm »

Hello,

I am testing this again, I think previously I tried out MC 22 or something like that.  Its been awhile now.  I cannot get 3d to work,  currently it will play 2d, but when I go to play 3d it tells me something is wrong with the audio which is bizarre.

My setup has been working flawlessly using mpc-BE with Madvr and lav filters for probably 2 years as external player from Kodi.  The other night I setup Kodi DS Player and it works fine too, but given that its no longer developed, I thought this might be the best long term solution.  I'm baffled as it uses the same components and yet will not work for 3d.    I have set the audio to either directsound default or to my receiver and still when I pick a 3d movie it says problem with audio even though audio is working fine with 2d.  I even copied the settings from my madvr directiory over to the jriver madvr to see if that would help and still no luck.

Does anyone have any idea?

Also, is there someplace I can go to see what buttons do what on the MCE remote with media center?  I've been searching but can't seem to find something that explains where I click.  I've found some type of menu while playing, but still haven't found something that lets me select subtitles at least not without having to right click the screen.

Thanks

Discussion: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,115543.0.html

You'll find other threads if you search. MC uses a private copy of madVR, so you need to set up 3D in there (I think you understand that based on your comments), but there is very little to change in madVR to make 3D work. Other than that you should use ROHQ (Red October High Quality), and select one of the "Quality Settings" that are templates for madVR, based on your hardware capabilities. See video Options.

Press the up arrow multiple times while playing a video to see all the menu options. MC Theatre View can be driven almost completely with the four arrow keys and the OK button.
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/OSD

MC uses the MCE commands as you would expect for WMC or any other media app, pretty much. It recognises all MCE commands by default, and doesn't need to learn those commands. Perhaps with some caveats. Take a look at "Options > Remote Control > Commands".

I don't know why you are getting the "Something went wrong with playback" message with 3D content, but usually that would mean that your output device isn't capable of playing the audio stream selected, which might be changing when you switch to 3D. Or maybe the 3D video you are testing with has some strange audio stream, or is using ATMOS?

3D works fine on my HTPC, described in my signature.

I did get 3d to play although I'm not sure what I did, but it just runs for maybe a minute before it appears that the queues drop out, maybe the settings are too high?  I set it for best performance.  I also don't get any audio with 3d, although 2d appears to be working fine.  I can try copying over the settings from the normal madvr again to the madvr in JRiver.

I can try copying over the settings from the normal madvr again to the madvr in jriver.

I recommend against that. In fact, I recommend that you set the JRiver version of madVR back to the defaults by running the "restore default settings.bat" batch file in the JRiver mad VR directory, "C:\Users\[UserID]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 24\Plugins\madvr", and then select the Quality Setting "Best Performance" again.

Then make sure no components of other media players are running in the background (Kodi etc.), and test again.

If you still have issues, come back and provide information about the PC you are using: CPU, GPU, memory specifically, but anything else special about it.

i’ve never had 3D successfully work with any GPU other than nVidia.

intel integrated GPUs would partially work but eventually crash and often have weird artifacts during playback.

i had tested one AMD but it was an old GPU and it just didn’t work.

YMMV of course.    curious what GPU you have...

I tried again and I did reset the madvr for jriver to default settings, it stops after a few seconds and has no sound.  That is with full screen exclusive checked in settings, with fullscreen exclusive off, it doesn't do 3d, but the sound works fine and it plays fine.

Its a normal HTPC with integrated intel graphics,  I3 skylake chip, I been using this setup for 2 years now with madvr and mpc-be.

Well, MC would be using different DirectShow audio filters, which could explain the lack of audio when 3D plays for a short while. It could be that the better audio processing in MC is using just a bit more CPU power and tipping the i3 Skylake chip over the top, so it can't cope. Or it could be that MC just hasn't synced up the audio yet and started playback, and when it tries that is the cause of playback stopping. Sometimes there is a short bit of no sound before playback starts normally.

Does the CPU, GPU, or memory usage peak out when you try to play 3D?

That could be down to the source video, so you will have to explain what that is. A Blu-ray disc? A Blu-ray rip? If so, what format rip? Full folder set, ISO, MKV? Did you do the rip? etc. Are you using the Blu-ray menu or just playing the main title? What audio formats does the source have, and what are you trying to play? Just plain old 5.1 channel PCM, or are you Bitstreaming? You said you tried DirectSound out so I assume PCM, but you didn't say when you tried outputting to the Receiver if you used WASAPI Exclusive or ASIO.

Also, how do you connect from the HTPC to the Receiver, via HDMI? Then output video from the Receiver to the TV via HDMI out on the Receiver?

You are obviously still make changes in the madVR settings as well, since you mentioned trying fullscreen exclusive on and the fullscreen exclusive off. I'm pretty sure resetting madVR to defaults and using JRiver Quality Settings would leave Fullscreen Exclusive mode off. Use the JRiver defaults, and as you have an iGPU, use the Quality Setting of Best Performance. I don't use Fullscreen Exclusive and haven't for some time. 3D works fine without it. I think that was discussed in the threads I linked to. It has certainly been discussed a lot and I think the conclusion these days is to leave it off. But I am using a nVidia GPU.

It sounds like that is getting you video in 2D now and audio working. I assume that you have ticked "Enable 3D Blu-ray and MKV 3D decoding" in MC. Also that if you are opening madVR settings you are doing it through MC Options pages, or right-clicking a playing video. Know that JRiver uses a different version of madVR to other available versions, and that it has special handling in place for OSD overlays and such. JRiver doesn't support madVR tuning, and recommends using their presets. I'm certainly no madVR expert. So what I suggest is getting MC set up for 3D as per the defaults and Hendrik's instructions in the thread I linked to, and then if that just plays 2D, but with sounds, we debug that.

Maybe try catching a MC log of trying to play a 3D source, and see if there is anything in there that points to why you are just getting 2D.

I did the settings like suggested in beginning.  No fullscreen exclusive. No 3d.  If you know how to make it work otherwise. Please let me know.  I connect hdmi from computer to receiver and from receiver to projector.

You might be better off closing MC and making sure it's not running, then deleting the madvr directory under "C:\Users\[UserID]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 24\Plugins\" and letting MC redownload it and starting over again fresh. Heck, you could delete all the folders within Plugins to start off fully fresh for madvr and LAV.

I could but that doesn't change the fact that neither this nor kodi nor mpc will do 3d without fullscreen exclusive. I will try your suggestion in a little bit

I deleted the plugins and now no 3d. I went into advanced settings and checked exclusive and it still doesn't go into exclusive or start 3d

Okay so I got it into 3d and got sound and it was playing.  Still had to use full screen exclusive mode to get it into 3d and it will only work if audio is direct sound and not my receiver which means no bitstreaming.  When it is working, the render times are way too high and the render queues aren't filling fully yet looking at the actual settings in madvr advanced settings, it appears to be at the lowest.  Does anyone have any idea how to fix?

Do you have the latest drivers installed for your motherboard and Skylake CPU?

We seem to be coming down to nVidia works, Intel iGPU doesn't. But then you said 3D works using mpc-BE with Madvr and lav filters, and Kodi DS Player, on the same hardware.

You need to start digging into logs.

Please see the wiki topic on Logging, but this may be a madVR or driver problem.

running desktop in 4k? … press ctr+J, check that MadVR is not upscaling your 3D to 4K … that's very expensive operation as it involves scaling 2x 1080p images to 2160p … that would explain high render times … this is caused by desktop dpi scaling settings

not many ppl noticed this wasteful scaling (TV eventually receive 1080p anyway) as they run powerful NVidia GPU

one solution is to run desktop in 1080p … another solution I wont mention as I usually get shot for that lol

while movie running press ctr+j … then can capture with print screen … see attachment for example (hard to capture 3D stuff from screen with smartphone … unless you force projector to 2D mode)

also some info on hardware … window version and driver version will help
