  • Autumn shade...

I purchased my license this year.  It's disappointing to see an upgrade that I have to pay for less than 2 weeks after I purchased it.  Do you have a way to allow a recent purchaser to upgrade without charge?

Actually, if you've purchased since December 14 you've already got a MC25 licence. :)

MC24 was a big hit and we have ambitious plans for MC25, and we think you'll be pleased.

Can you expand on this?

  • I may be old but I don't remember being senile

I've struck the same problem as 1maynard.
I follow your links to: https://jriver.com/purchase_25_master_as_upgrade.html
Paste in my current registration code (MC24 Master licence) and get to page: https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/buy.cgi?productid=88&upgradeonly=1
which says Please use the program to initiate purchase.

I'm on MacOS 10.13 and tried it with both Safari and Firefox.

Over to you guys...
Brian

FWIW for all those who doubt the value:
I've been using Media Centre since about V10, when it was called something else ("Media Player"?, I forget:). In all that time I've not seen a better tool for both managing and playing my music collection. I'm retired, on a fixed (small) income and still feel it's worth the annual upgrade payment.
Keep up the good work, guys!!
B

Tried to buy the upgrade and when I click on the windows upgrade direct link it takes me to a page to enter my registration code. when I click the purchase media center 25 windows it goes to a page that says (Please use the program to initiate purchase.) I do not see a way to do this. If you want up to buy the upgrade please make it easier.
Thanks

I have a license for 25, received "Media Center25 Windows-447389.mjr" in an email, ungraded my license, but can't find a download for 25.  Has it been released yet?  If not, what's it's release date?  I see "Pre-order Now" in the texts, but no link for it.

It has not been released yet (pre-order state). Estimated to be released in April. If you have recent MC24 you can just run that .mjr file and it will register MC25 for you even though you don't have the actual product yet. When MC25 is released you just download it and start using it (as you have already registered earlier with the mjr-file ).

I have a master license for 22. If I update to 25 now using the pre-order, will I be able to use 24 until 25 becomes available? Thank you.

Yep. Just make sure you're using the latest build (latest build for Windows is 24.0.73). :)

I just purchased upgrade to MC25, I received a new registration code.
My JRiver player is still titled MC24. Will this change automatically in April?

My 2nd question is I am offered a new key code, but when I try to download the file in the email, I get:
A license for your JRiver software has been automatically installed. You will see instructions for installing it on other computers in a separate browser window (probably behind this one). To save it, right click on the link and use the "Save As" option.
Nothing available. Albeit all my players are working, am I to assume everything kicks in, in April?

Once MC25 is released, you'll have to download and install it. Each major MC version is separate from each other, meaning you can have multiple versions of MC installed on the same PC at the same time (e.g. MC23 + MC24 + MC25).

Personally, when a new major MC version is released I do a library backup of the major version of MC I'm currently running, uninstall it completely, install the new major version of MC and restore the library backup in it. That way only the "latest and greatest" remains.

early in this thread a logical request was made for an explanation of the improvements available in MC25.

Did I miss something or are there no significant improvements in MC25?

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure (as I don't work for JRiver) but I don't think they know or decided specifically what's going to be in MC25 just yet, hence why a roadmap/list of improvements hasn't been posted. They might have an idea on what they want to do, but whether or not they'll be able to add it is another story. It's still early in the development cycle so I'm guessing they're just getting an idea of what they want to add and accomplish during the development cycle. If they posted a list of what they've got done so far, it'd seemingly be a small list and that wouldn't accurately reflect their plans for MC25. There's still time before the projected public release (early April) so things can change before then and now. But the list of new features will increase before now and then. Look at the last couple development cycles for MC. Features were added during throughout the entire development cycles length of time.

The point I'm trying to make is, the development cycle is still in the early days, the roadmap/list of improvement plans isn't set in stone and they likely haven't decided what features are going to be added to MC25. Posting a roadmap or a list of planned features right now might raise expectations too much, especially if a specific feature on the roadmap isn't added during the MC25 development cycle due to whatever reason(s).

Finally, again I'm just guessing, but when MC25's public release is near they might post a "New in MC25" post listing some of the new features and modify that as new features are added.

You're totally entitled to your opinion. The reason I would pay in advance is to get a discount and I know now I will still be using the product for many releases yet to come.

Upgraded immediately as usual. My thinking is that $20/yr "subscription" is well worth the money to support JRiver. Been here since....MC13(?). MC24 did not offer a great deal of new things for me personnaly. But fixing WDM driver was a big thing, and the sum of all small things is usually good. Especially since JRiver seem to keep the application stable, and do not tend to break old features with new ones.

I just got the registration code for MC 25. The system tells me it has been installed, but when I click on Registration Info in MC, it still shows MC 24. I realize MC 25 isn't released yet, but shouldn't this notification have changed to something else?

This stuff always confuses me. Sorry! Please advise. Thanks.

It starts with a discount offer with no upgrade info. If you need the upgrade info you don't have to take advantage of the discount.

Paid for MC25  ;D

Can I request a feature to switch output sources quickly instead of going through menu, good for A/B comparison between two DACs.
Also to play audio track embedded within a video to any sources or zones, while playing the video in JRiver main screen.

I think the point is that, IF you do not upgrade, you save the whole price...not just the discount amount.
When my SO says they got something, not needed, on sale, I explain they would have saved the whole amount if not bought at all.
I too have been using MC for many years and think it is a well thought out product but am reluctant to pay for enhancements that will likely never be used.

I've been very happy with JRiver and the knowledge that I don't have to upgrade to keep using a very stable piece of software. Like others, it feels more like a donation given in appreciation, as I don't think I need an upgrade yet...JRiver does what I need it to.

Whatever,.... as I'm fortunate enough to be working and have some spare money at the end of the month, this upgrade price represents good value for money. I want to know that the company can keep going to develop the software for when I do need the upgrade.

is there a version history / change log for all the versions so i can see whats been added/changed for each version?

i couldnt find anything obvious from the FAQ page but maybe i just missed it?

note - im not talking about v25 specifically, i mean all the versions/releases.  i've got v21 because i only use MC for my music files stored locally so havent updated for a couple of years as it does all i need it to.  i dont need all the bells and whistles, but i cant even find a list of all the bells and whistles to see if theres anything in the newer versions that i might want to play around with, which seems odd as they must be listed somewhere, either that or people are only buying this on word of mouth or the suck it and see approach.

Why can we not choose to stream in  AAC-HE?  Or even just AAC 128k   It is far and above a much better option than MP3 for quality at lower bitrates, and practically any device should have the CPU power to decode it these days.  I know I'm no the only one who has asked for it, and I hate to beat a dead horse..   But we were even told at one point AAC streaming support was being worked on -   so where is it?

If I recall correctly, MC doesn't have a AAC encoder yet.

Just a comment in defense of JRiver's approach. If you don't use a lot of software, you may not be aware that more and more companies have moved to a subscription model, either monthly or annually or both. Office 365 and Adobe CC are the most well-known (and expensive).

JRiver charges a yearly fee for each new version, but allows you to keep the versions you've purchased in the past, which is not the case with many of the major software companies.

Most significantly, every year JRiver offers a generous pre-release discount on the new version. This may not be unique, but it's rare.

Very often the new features aren't useful to me. Since I bought my TCL 4K Roku TV, I use Plex for most of my movie and TV show libraries because of the built-in app. I still use MC every day, though, for my music libraries and for other features that Plex doesn't have.

I believe in paying for software I use regularly, whether it's an outright purchase or a donation for freeware, and I feel that everyone who can afford it should do the same. Most developers don't make a ton of money for their work, and at JRiver users can communicate directly with the team. All in all, we get a lot for our modest (optional) annual investment. If you disagree, don't upgrade. Negative comments in this thread are both unnecessary and irritating.

Thanks for the link!
I parsed the v24 release notes to just show new features since I was curious if I use - or even know about - any of them.

One distressing things I noticed is that there hasn't been a Mac version release note since MC19 and NONE of the 120+ items below mention Macs.

Here's the ones that have been of interest to me:

Would pay for upgrade for these features:
-none-

Will probably use:
5. NEW: Added a toolbar button to add selected files to Playing Now.
4. NEW: Added a "Move Up" and "Move Down" button to the playlist view header that allows moving a selection up or down in the list.
2. NEW: Links to individual playlists can be added to the toolbar.
6. NEW: Added the option General > Behavior > Remove files from Playing Now after they are played.
2. NEW: Quick Play will shuffle the files that are being played if Ctrl is held down.
3. NEW: Playback from library server will issue a wake request before starting playback to wake a sleeping server.
7. NEW: Better multi-zone syncing. Work in progress.

Interesting and might check out:
2. NEW: The playlist upload feature (including songs) is now available to any registered Media Center user. It's called "Upload to Cloud" on the right-click menu for playlists.
3. NEW: Tag-writing for MP4/m4a audio files will use Apple's extensible tagging format if the files already contain such tags.
14. NEW: Added the option "Advance to the next track when stopping after the current track" which defaults to true but allows you to turn it off.
4. NEW: You can right-click a column and pick "Remove Column From Sorting" to keep the rest of the sort order but remove that single column.

Based on this and lack of requested Mac updates for 2 1/2 years now (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/board,45.0.html), I think I'll pass on upgrading and just watch upcoming release notes to see if there's anything I'm interested in before getting a new version.

 David

Release Notes MC24
4. Don't try to read length on streaming files in the current zone when sending DLNA event updates.
6. NEW: Added the MCWS function Playlist/Build to take a set of file keys and a playlist path and builds the playlist.
2. NEW: The playlist upload feature (including songs) is now available to any registered Media Center user. It's called "Upload to Cloud" on the right-click menu for playlists.
12. NEW: The "Edit Disc Information" dialog shown for CDs now has the Disc # field.
3. NEW: Tag-writing for MP4/m4a audio files will use Apple's extensible tagging format if the files already contain such tags.
1. NEW: Added the option to suppress the duplicate track warning in a playlist (Options > General > Advanced > Show duplicate file warnings for playlists).
2. NEW: Media Center can now read video tags written in Apple Quicktime's extensible tagging format.
5. NEW: Added a toolbar button to add selected files to Playing Now.
1. NEW: You can add a Play Radio Paradise toolbar button.
2. NEW: Support for FLAC-in-Ogg files and streams.
7. NEW: Extra Radio Paradise channel toolbuttons added.
2. NEW: Added the MCC MCC_LIST_SEND_TO_PLAYING_NOW (26031) to add selected files to Playing Now using any of the modes available (play shuffled, add albums to end, etc.).
6. NEW: Added the website MetaCritic to the online movie information lookup (http://www.metacritic.com).
8. NEW: There's a "Web Media" playlist that shows under the "Streaming" tree item and files from the Open URL dialog get added to it when added to the library.
11. NEW: Added an option to allow Live IPC playback (WDM/ASIO driver) to fully engage ZoneSwitch and switch the current active zone, so that remote control/volume media keys work with it, among other things.
12. NEW: Pressing Ctrl+Q+Enter in a search box adds the files to Playing Now (Ctrl+Enter plays).
1. NEW: MC will import data from Sony modd sidecar files for videos uploaded from cameras/camcorders/phones using Sony's PlayMemories Home software.
16. NEW: Live TV Closed Captioning or Subtitles can now be switched using OSD command.
4. NEW: Added the database expression DBLocation() to return the location of a file in the database.
11. NEW: Non-standard file associations for various DSD mimetypes added so that we can see those files from DLNA server libraries that are using those mimetypes.
14. NEW: Added the option "Advance to the next track when stopping after the current track" which defaults to true but allows you to turn it off.
4. NEW: Added a "Move Up" and "Move Down" button to the playlist view header that allows moving a selection up or down in the list.
10. NEW: Closed Captioning support in ATSC live and recorded TV shows.
4. NEW: You can right-click a column and pick "Remove Column From Sorting" to keep the rest of the sort order but remove that single column.
5. NEW: Media Center will verify the SSL certificate of the Media Server, and ask the user for confirmation if it is untrusted (trust is also established through the Access Key lookup).
7. NEW: Added the playlist format "M3U (extended)" to the types for a handheld to write the #EXTINF portion.
9. NEW: Added a "Remove All" button to the sort configuration window (in the menu).
13. NEW: Panel - Added alternate text to images in the player.
17. NEW: Added the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+B to backup the current library.
18. NEW: Added a "Combine..." feature for playlists to show a dialog to combine with another playlist and offer choices for the combine method.
22. NEW: DVB Subtitle support for live TV. Untested, please test and report how it works.
1. NEW: Added the expression function FilePlaylists() to return a list of playlist names a file is in.
4. NEW: Introduced a "High Quality" madVR profile. The profile is decent quality designed for mid-range GPUs, not high-end/enthusiast-class GPUs.
7. NEW: The image rotation feature also works on BMP files and PNG files (as well as JPEG).
1. NEW: Added an option to choose perfomance-optimized hardware decoding for RO HQ (to help with 4K HDR playback).
2. NEW: Added a DSD Bitstreaming option to select the maximum DSD sample rate to bitstream, and otherwise fallback to decoding.
3. NEW: Enabled the "Glass" translucency/blur effect on Windows 8.1 and 10.
6. NEW: When adding duplicate tracks to a playlist, the program will ask if you want to remove them.
9. NEW: Media Center offers multiple preconfigured madVR quality presets to import (High Performance and Balanced for now, High Quality profiles will be added in the future).
11. NEW: Panes allow picking the sorting "Display Expression" to bring the sorting back to by the display expression.
2. NEW: Closed Captioning support in ATSC live and recorded TV shows.
6. NEW: Pix01 has a password change function which it triggered by the "forgot password" button in the pix01 login information box. ALL passwords for pix01 have been reset and will need to be updated by the user.
3. NEW: Added the processing performance to the audio path for convolution.
5. NEW: DVB-C frequency table for Denmark.Yousee.Odense.Glentevejens. Thanks ABA!
6. NEW: Added "Exempt from auto cleanup" button in Theater View for TV recordings.
9. NEW: DLNA: If we are playing to (controlling) a renderer and the track playback stops before the end (granularity of 5 seconds) we assume another controller has been used to stop the playback and as such we will not continue a playlist and assume we are no longer the active controller.

Most Windows changes also affect Mac versions.

If I recall correctly, MC doesn't have a AAC encoder yet.

yes, I believe that was my whole point  :P

I know JRiver uses ffmpeg, but do they compile their own version?     According to the ffmpeg trac there is one library available that can do aac-he,  however it's not GPL compatible so there are no binaries /  you have to compile ffmpeg from source.    Maybe this can be looked into then?   idk

Upgrade purchased, not grumpy. Although I rarely use JRiver mc for Windows, now that I have the Idpi.
If I can work out streaming from windows jriver to my idpi I'll be happy.

I just plunked my money down but before I install the new version on my Windows x64 do I run the risk of messing up my current setup?  If so, what should I do in case I need to recover from a failed upgrade?

Thank you.

OK, today it worked and I upgraded to 25. Not a clue why it wouldn't accept my password before but it did today. Sorry for being grumpy in previous posts.
