Hi all,

Maybe I'm just going through a nostalgic phase (started collecting tapes again...) but in the old days of mix tape - and later mix CD - creation I used to be quite meticulous with crossfading each track appropriately (sometimes with some track start/end trimming) to *really* nail the flow of a playlist.

I really miss that!  Sure, I could still create a playlist in an audio editor, crossfade and save as one big .flac file, but I got to thinking how cool it might be if JRiver allowed an extension to the playlist file format and provided the capability within the playlist editor to specify start/end trimming of a track and the amount of crossfade between each song for that specific playlist.

Am I the only one who would go through the effort to use a feature like that?

For track base start and end trim, learn how to use the [Playback Range] field. It specifies what it says; the range of audio in the file that will be played, and dynamically applies that to the track. https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Playback_Range

I don't know of any way in MC to do Playlist specific crossfade though, as MC's Track Change settings are global. But you could look at using the [DSP] field to call up a DSP Preset, and then maybe find a DSP Plug-in that would provide the crossfade you wanted. That would then be applied to the track of course, and not the Playlist, but that is getting close. https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DSP#Managing_VST_Plugins

Unfortunately playlists don't really carry any data other then a list of files in them, so you can't have files behave differently when played as part of a certain Playlist.

Take your mix tapes to the next level and use DJ software/an audio mixer then your not constrained by the order of the playlist  You can then mix in the order your mood takes you.

Great ideas! I had no idea there was a DSP preset tag. Lots to look into. I use Vegas for non-linear editing and it can easily play on the fly as tracks are laid down...
