Any would work. Generally the trick to a smoother system is to uninstall the extra software you don't need once you're set up.

If you are just starting then install Ubuntu.

If you have decent linux knowledge install Debian.

Debian just requires more knowledge to get everything installed correctly because they hide proprietary firmware/software by default. Ubuntu was built to make Debian more friendly and does a few quality of life things for you.

Ubuntu uses Debian as their software base and mint uses Ubuntu or Debian depending on the version you use so any one of those is fine i think. I know a few windows 10 people who are using Mint now happily.

If you just want to get it all going without a lot of effort stick with Ubuntu and worry about the distro on a pc you can play with.

Yeah, for most users I'd recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint, unless you have a basic grasp of Linux (and the terminal) and are willing to use Debian. Otherwise, Ubuntu or Linux Mint works great with MC for those who want an easy setup. :)

If you're a bear for punishment, you could give installing Arch Linux manually a try, or another "advanced" distro like Gentoo or openSUSE. :D

Hi,

As a perfect newbie with Linux i was wondering if Fedora could be a good choice to install JRiver ?
It seems that it is used for other audio server like Roon.

Do you recommend to use Ubuuntu instead of Fedora for JRiver ?

I actually wouldn't recommend Fedora for a Linux newbie, I'd recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Simply put, with Fedora it requires a little more of a "hands on" approach to install JRiver Media Center and to update it (has to be updated manually since there's no Fedora repository). Fortunately there's a Fedora script for installing JRiver Media Center which makes it much easier, but like I said updating is manual, as in you have to manually run the script again when there's JRiver Media Center updates. With Ubuntu and Linux Mint you just add the JRiver Media Center repository of your choice (latest, stable and beta) and install and update Media Center from your distro's package manager (e.g. Synaptic).

Using Ubuntu or Linux Mint with JRiver's repository is the easiest, most straightforward way to get Media Center installed on Linux. If you had some Linux experience, then Fedora would be a great choice if you can handle the more "hands on" approach to installing and updating.

Thanks a lot !

It seems that many user choose Fedora to use with its Low latency kernel CCRMA to get the best sound quality.
Possible to do the same thing with Ubuntu or Linux Mint ? (Sorry for my newbie questions)

I an ready to learn how doing the « hands on » tasks if it could provide a better sound quality. I have decided to use a Linux version of JRiver to optimize the OS and maximizethe sound quality on a dedicated MacMini.

Is there a script or tuto that could help to optimize Ubuntu for the best audio results (focusing on audio and reducing unecessary activity), an advice for the choice of the kernel ?

As a newbie you should be more concerned with learning the OS than customizing esoteric settings. Ubuntu makes learning the OS quite easy because it has a lot of documentation and fallback tools that abstract away the terminal.

FWIW, any distro can be customized to your heart's desire, they each just offer a slightly different "starting point" and philosophy.

In my opinion, this is a myth. I've used all of them and they've always sounded the same to me (which is to be expected when everything is output bit-perfect).
