Upmixing .vst How to route channels?

Hello!
I'm trying to use the Penteo PerfectSurround upmixing plugin .vst
I'm assuming I need to place it at the top of the DSP chain to convert the two channel to 5.1
Is it possible to use an upmixing plugin in the audio chain? Or am I limited to the jriver upmixing?
I was previously using audiomulch which allows me full control of channel matrixing and such. Does JRiver have an advanced mode for such a use?
