Trying to install skins and finding the information sketchy at best.

Directions seem to indicate a folder while I have just an mjp file. Directions are to put in one of two places and then there was this "helpful" advice=== If you don't see your skin listed, you've done something wrong along the way.

I kind of guessed that. I'd prefer knowing how to do it correctly or how to troubleshoot what might have gone wrong.

Any ideas?

Don't think the .mjp files will work outside of Windows. You'll probably have to manually install them (if you have the full skin's files downloaded already).
