Hi

Showing my lack of understanding on upscaling here!

If I have 1080p content and a 4k TV, and I want upscaling to the TV native resolution, is this done by the PC graphics card or the TV? And if the TV can do it, is this good enough?

I used to let my Sony 65" TV do it, and it was fine. If you send 1080p content to a 4K TV it will upscale it. Depending on TV settings of course. I originally sent 1080p to the TV and left it at that, and it was still fine.

But now I use my nVidia 1060 to upscale to 4K, and it works fine. I set Display Settings to Custom and explicitly set the resolution and frame rates I want to use. Even though the Automatic switching usually selected the same values, I found Custom worked better with odd-ball stuff.

So, your choice. Depends a lot on your TV model.

I have tried both methods. For movies it was fine for me to let the TV do the upscaling. For my music concerts the movement of the artists was almost not as smooth if I let the TV do the upscaling. Most of this content is 29i and needs much more processing power compared to movies, which are mostly 23p. Upscaling 29i using madVR was much better. Also to zoom out small black bars was better if I use madVR. But I have a 2 year old OLED. Current video processors in current TV models from 2019 are much more powerful e.g. Sony/LG.

like roderick said ... upscaling with TV will depend a lot on TV

upscaling with MadVR needs decent GPU ... for 4k 1060 is a good start ... with higher end cards, you will be able to use more complex scaling algorithm at higher setting ... but there is diminishing return the higher you go

what you describe is not upscaling though ... its deinterlacing (“i” behind 29i) ... TV can do it, but again largely depend on TV (processing power available and technique used) ... generally more expensive TV will do it better

i use madVR ... cause it let me choose how i want to upscale ... other benefit is ability to use 3D LUT (if you into correct color calibration) ... and some ppl just swear by it

i never did try my TV upscaling ... but on a good 1080p content, its hard to tell the difference between 4k and upscaled hd from viewing normal distance ... also SD content imo is scaled better with madVR

My older LG OLED does a great job at most things but upscaling dark scenes is not oen of them. A lot of the dark scenes in GoT blurays look pretty crappy when the TV upscales them. When madVR does it they look great.

The point is try the TV first. If you don't like it then you can start fiddling.
