Monkey's Audio Channels...
« on: August 21, 2019, 07:41:02 am »

Hi everyone,

So this is kind of an aside, but it's really happy for me so I figured I could share.

For some reason, I got riddling about supporting more than two channels with Monkey's Audio.

It was incredibly tricky because I convert everything to X and Y so there's just no place for those extra channels.

I really thought I might be stuck, possibly forever.

But instead I got it figured out last night for a new build of Monkey's Audio!

I found a little glitch with 16-bit I need to fix tonight, but I'm now playing a 7.1 APE file I made with MC inside MC.

Matt is really happy about that :)

That is outstanding! Nothing like a good "Aha" moment when programming.

Congratulations, nothing like the feeling of solving a problem that's been nagging you.

Congrats! That's very cool  :)

I feel you as today at work I implemented same thing (well obviously not Monkey Audio multichannel ) 3 times. First one was just not going to work properly without some kind of hacks  and the second try was going to be way too complex to justify the efforts. Just when I started to thought that this is impossible I figured something out and in this case the solution was really simple and took just something like 20 minutes to implement and test. So someone could ask why I didn't do it like that in the first place and took whole day to do something very simple  ;D

It's another aside, but for some silly reason I got wondering about using mid/side encoding for surround files.

When I started, I was not doing that.  Just getting it to work was my goal.

But then I made the change and did another build!  Increased compression by a few percent on multi-channel files.

It uses the mid/side between the fronts, rears, and surrounds.  The center and sub are independent.
