New SDCard for Raspberry Pi 4 problems
« on: September 28, 2019, 05:51:55 pm »

After waiting two weeks for the SDCard to get to Florida I find the software will not see and mount the USB 3.0 drive containing my music library. This drive is fine working properly with the Raspian Buster Linux version of JRiver and Windows. I have tried all the possibilities available on the Main menu including updating to JRiver 25.0.102. Switching back to Raspian.

Oddly, on boot is starts streaming the usual boot text at a high resolution (small text) and then 3/4 of the way through it switches to a low resolution (large letters) then opens the GUI at the 1920/1080 standard display.

On both the PI4 Linux and IdPi the pane resize handles do reliable work. The cursor doesn't change the up/down arrow cursor and grab the movement handles on any horizontal or vertical control. The little arrows respond when clicked. Some times it will work only once then stops. Additionally the column labels don't slide back and forth when selected or the scroll handle on each pain won't move. You can still resize a column width by clicking the label and sliding the mouse over to the desired length and then releasing, but the label will not expand as you do it.

On both versions there is no Locate On Disk Internal to go to the SDCard Music folder so no File Manager access and thus no xterm access. Thanks though for the browser in the right click menu, that's been useful.

Until I can mount my drive this SCCard and software is useless, thankfully the Linux version works somewhat.

Done all the available options, on all USB ports. Would have tried all the Linux commands if I could still get to xterm. This is a USB 3.0 2TB Hard drive, it lights up blue as a 3.0 drive on the USB 3 connectors only.S It will mount a USB 2.0 drive, however. Should point out this is the same drive used on my Pi 3B+ with the previous non Pi 4 version of IdPi software.

Power?  The Pi4 consumes more power and if the drive doesn't have enough power, it won't work.

Nope, max_usb_current=1 doesn't help. It works under Raspian Buster but no go with IdPi.

Can you provide separate power?

I've had problems with a USB 3.0 drive on a Pi3 that were solved by providing a bigger power supply for the Pi.

I repeat this drive works on the same Pi 4 with Raspian Buster with JRiver Linux installed. Using the Official Raspberry Pi 4 power supply, 3A at 5.1v. I'm using it now to listen to music. No additional power should be required.

Are you using a USB 3.0 drive on the Pi4?

As for the console output, it's changed to the larger size deliberately to make it easier to read at distance.
What's the format of the external drive? It's possible we might be missing support for a particular format.
Locate on Disk Internal is a windows only function. Locate on disk External should popup a file browser.
I will take a look at the splitter. I noticed that in an earlier build but wasn't able to reproduce it.

This is a standard NTFS usb 3.0 drive. It has been working fine on the USB 2.0 connectors of my IdPi on a Pi 3B and Pi 3B+ running the last 3 generations of the IdPi software. I would check to see if you have properly compiled USB 3.0 support from the Buster compatible 4.19 Kernel via the CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD enable. A USB 2.0 drive mounts fine.

You're right about the On Disk internal, just checked the old software on a 3B+ and it was only external, my mistake!

The Linux ARM version seem to be running fine, it used to crash on the 3B series when you scrolled through a Album list on JRemote because it couldn't keep up with the thumbnails. The 4B 4g seem to be fast enough to prevent this.  I'll stick with Raspian for now.

It does seem the file browser from "on disk external" is missing from the new IdPi4 build (it's not supposed to use the web browser). I'll add that and get it into the updates.
We figured out there is a bug with the splitter and movement controls AFTER viewing any popup window (options, about, etc) working on that now.
Since the kernel is standard, it's more likely that something is missing with the ntfs-3g support, will check that too and let you know.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cloudplay/streaming doesn't work on the MC for Linux ARM build yet.

Just as I thought, not a big deal for me since I don't stream audio that much.

One other thing, when setting up Rasp-Config I noticed that the display resolution maxes out at 1920 rather then 4K. I understand this probably isn't important to most IdPi users, but it is a major selling point the of Pi 4B.

And I noticed the WICD didn't show my 5G router channel. The previous IdPI for 3B  and Raspian sees and logins in to the high speed channel.

Don't rush on my account. Take the time you need to test and resolve all the new hardware issues and other updates. My Pi 3B+ setup is just sitting waiting look for something to do so I could put it back into service if I blow up my Pi 4B!

Seems like the wifi network problem is a bit of a generic issue. It's because the country code for wifi isn't set and it's not settable the way it comes up at the moment. Working on it...

That's fixed and the update is live.
Update your Id, then on the Id menu choose option 17 do the localization option and set your WiFi country so that the 5ghz will become active.

Yea, high speed Wi-Fi works.
USB3 hard drive does not work.

There are weird differences between VNC and direct keyboard mouse in the Raspi-Config menu. Depending on menu VNC won't scroll down a list while the keyboard will. On other menus VNC will correctly respond to left/right key presses by jumping to the select/back/finish buttons, on direct keyboard it doesn't.

Under VNC licence entry remain in lower case regardless of the Caps-Lock key.

After upgrade MC107 doesn't puts up two blank information screens, it worked once or so and then quit.

My Pi4 has developed an HDMI heat problem and keeps going out, so I am going to wait until more people upgrade to a Pi4 and the software becomes stabilized.

Thanks Duncan.

You may need a different VNC client. I notice subtle differences between VNC and MS remote desktop but nothing big.
I tested with a FAT hard drive here. It works with spaces but you will need to re-select the read-only or read-write option and reboot before the new udev script takes effect.
MC107 didn't change but I have noticed a some odd behavior from the browser window. I think that's a chromium issue. Hendrik is waiting on a chromium fix to generate a new package. On mine it seems to only happen on initial boot. If you exit MC (it will restart at the top ofthe next minute) the browser window seems to work ok.
The kernel on there hasn't changed and it is the one that's supposed to "solve" the heat issue. It may be that you will need a heatsink/fan on yours.
Which raspi config are you using? The text mode one, the gui one on the Pi or via remote desktop/vnc (with the Id in text or gui mode)?
I just popped in another update but I don't think it affects any of the issues you have.

I have a fan on the cpu it keeps it at around 40C. I am using the GUI with and without VNC. I'm getting all kinds of boot problems with the software. It doesn't want to reboot, it gets to the end of the shut down process and then just stops. I'll reload the software onto the SDCard and try updating again, maybe my SDcard or Pi has problems too. My old setup still works and Raspian works ( using it now) so I'll stick with that. If the USB 3 NTFS drive works as a type 3 drive on Raspian Buster's kernel it should have worked on this software if the kernels and drivers are the same.

Thanks anyway, Duncan

Could power be an issue?  What's plugged into the Pi?  Try reading about power problems on the RPi site.

No, once again the latest Raspian Buster running JRiver 25.0.108 with a 2TB USB 3.0 drive on the USB3 port and an Official Raspberry Pi Pi 4 USB C power supply works fine, no low power displays. It is the IdPi's software problem on this card. I'm done for now, will wait and upgrade when everybody has a Pi4 and it works perfectly.

Thanks anyway, Duncan.

The Pi's often have trouble with USB drives.  Separate power is recommended.

Please try reading about it on their site.

That it works with one config but not another doesn't help.

We're not commonly seeing problems with the IdPi4.

I am having problems with the access key on the new Id Pi for RPi4.

Specifically, when entering the access key in JRemote, it is rejected on my iPad 2 which is running iOS 9.3.3 and at end of life.

Please do not tell me that the iOS version is too old, it works fine with the Id Pi I have that runs on the 3B+ board, MC25. However in trying to add the new RPi4 server in JRemote on iPad 2, I am getting a mismatch error.

I also note that the key itself is displayed differently than on the 3B+, the Start menu screen shows the typical 6 character combination of capital and lower case letters, and that is followed by another 6 characters, all lower case.

My Moto X Pure Android device gained the new server in JRemote simply by entering those first 6 characters, and ignoring the 2nd set that are all lower case. However when I look at the key in the actual Media Servers pane in the GUI, it is listed only as those last 6 lower case digits. Why?

Back to the iPad 2, and it simply refuses the mix of upper and lower case first 6 characters that the Moto X Pure accepted.

I have another Android device, a Galaxy Tab A tablet, and it was very finicky in accepting the key, and never did get a different endpoint to play anything. Further, while it appears you can press hold any server listed to delete it (a trash can symbol appears), doing so does nothing, it's still there after touching the trash symbol.

So to sum it up, I've got an access key that is two sets of 6 digits as opposed to one, and while my Moto X Pure Android device took that key and JRemote is functioning, the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab A are being less cooperative.

With the Galaxy I'm sure I can just delete the JRemote app and reinstall and that will probably solve whatever issue is going on there, but I don't dare do that with the iPad 2, as the iOS App Store is notorious for then telling me my version is too old to re-download the latest version of the app, in other words I'd probably lose JRemote for good on the old iPad 2 if I did that, and it is the primary controller that I use with the Id Pi. It worked flawlessly on the Id Pi for RPi3 3B+.

Why does the new Id Pi for RPi4 list the access key as 2 sets of 6 characters? Why can't I delete a server in JRemote for Android when it looks like I should be able to?

That's very odd.  It shouldn't do that.

If you can't solve it, you should be able to use the IP address instead of the Access Key.  For example:

192.168.0.14:52199

I've got JRemote for Android sorted out now, though it is annoying that one can't simply delete a server when the interface suggests that it can be done.

I'll try the IP address on the iPad 2, thanks.

The Main menu displays the Id Access and other data like this:
Id-94C6911A57D1  Access Key BbwySB  Id 25.0.7  MC 25.0.107  Engen 1.0.69

You are seeing an extra 6 characters after (in the example above) BbwySB ??

If your Id is connected to the internet, you can get it to generate a new access key by connecting to it locally or via vnc/remote desktop and doing:
Tools->Options->Media Network->Access key->Reset
The new key will appear in MC right away and on the main menu if you hit enter to refresh it's info.

Note that if the Id is in text mode and you use vnc/remote desktop to connect to it, MC will be on the task bar/system tray and you bring it up by right-clicking and choosing iconify.

Yes that's right, in the Main Menu screen the Access Key is displayed as you have it above, except there are also an additional 6 characters (all lower case) after the first 6, and those 6 lower case characters are the only thing that appears under Tools-> Options ->Media Network -> Access Key

BTW, iOS JRemote is still being built to a 9.3 base.
Unless they remove app store support for 9.3 you should be able to re-get JRemote version 3.29.

HMMM, delete that. I just tried 3.29 on 9.3 in the debugger and it doesn't work.

I am somewhat reluctant to reset the key given the trouble I already had, and the fact it is now working on both Android and iOS.

But it is exactly as I stated it, I wish I could connect via VNC and do a screenshot like you did, but VNC is demanding a password for the Id Pi, and there should not be one.

EDIT: I see in another post you stated the default password is remote, and that worked. Now how do you take a screen shot? The typical way I'd do that (command+shift+3) in macOS isn't working in VNC Viewer.

EDIT: I see in another post you stated the default password is remote, and that worked. Now how do you take a screen shot? The typical way I'd do that (command+shift+3) in macOS isn't working in VNC Viewer.
You might have to resize the vnc screen down a bit.
IIRC I did command-shift-4 then spacebar to get just that window.

Re: New SDCard for Raspberry Pi 4 problems

Hi, I'm back with an update.

Bought a new Pi 4B 2G card to replace the Pi 4B 4G and retried installing the IdPi SDCard. Works this time with a usable 2TB NTFS USB 3.0 drive and stable HDMI port (so far). So have upgraded to new card and retired the Pi 3B+ server. My Pi 4B 4G card works as a Raspian Buster computer at clocks of 2G CPU and 600Mhz GPU so have backup desktop! There are still bugs here and there, but I'm too lazy to track and record them.

One point, at the moment the High Speed Wi-Fi enabled by the setting of the Wi-Fi Localization to USA appears not to be stored across cold boots, at least for me.

The hardware monitor program needs to show the temp. An unmodified Pi4 in 26C ambient runs in the upper 50C-65C at stock speeds, worse if put in case without fan. Being able to monitor the temp would be helpful. Attempts to use vcgencmd measure_temp throws a 'VCHI Initialization error', while 'cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp' works fine.

Thanks again for all your help. Just bought the latest MC 26 upgrade so still long term JRiver user.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback.
Will look at adding the temp to the monitor and check on the localization. IIRC it was a bugger to figure out where that's stored and I wasn't certain I got it in the right place though it worked here.
I assume you did the update 12 on it?
