How can I play music thru DAC rather than the built-in spkrs?
« on: November 15, 2019, 11:08:22 pm »

I used to know how to get it to do this but cannot figure it out now. Can we get something done about the audio interface design on this product? Nobody wants to hear music through the built-in speakers of the MacBook.

If you have your DAC plugged into a USB port, the MAC OS will display it in the pull down menu under the speaker icon at the top right.

You can also switch the audio device in MC's Options > Audio section in the Audio Device drop down menu.

No, my only options there are 1. Default Audio 2. Built-in Output 3. Other Null

I changed it to Other Null... silence is certainly better than built-in output

I can choose USB High Speed Audio from there but the Marantz unit will only display USB: Unlock. Used to be it would show some sort of audio display and of course some sound. Maybe I will try the OPPO and see what happens with that.

update: Switched it from options->null output to options->USB High Speed audio

So now it is working -- Thanks for the clues on how to fix it.

Are you trying to access it over DLNA? If so...

After reading your subsequent post, I realized I may have led you astray.

When you change the audio out using the MAC OS, you change it for both MC and the MAC.   So if you are listening to music you will also get the computer notification beeps and audio in your A/V system

When you change just MC to your DAC, the computer audio remains on the internal speakers.

When I upgraded to MC 25, the DAC audio path from MC24 was now back to default  and I had to go to PLAYER/PLAYBACK OPTIONS/AUDIO and put it back where it was (I also have a USB Oppo DAC).  The MAC audio output remained at "Internal Speakers"

This means that your DAC is not recognized by MC
Is your DAC recognized by MacOS?

If you cannot select in System Preferences > Sound or in Audio Midi Setup, then it is not recognized by the system.
You could select OPTION > Apple icon and select System Information to see it is recognized at a hardware level on the USB bux

Pro tip:  You can turn Mac OS "alert sounds" off.  System Preferences > Sound Effects > Alert sound volume slider > (pull all the way to the left to turn off)

I generally keep my default device set to an output that I don't use very much.  This keeps things like google hangouts from making loud "bings and bongs" when I'm not expecting it.  Taming every sound that your computer can make is difficult today because so many web applications have loud alert sounds that are not controlled by the OS, but only by the application.  For example, I was chatting with an Amazon customer service rep a few days ago.  Every time she wrote something, a beep was loudly emitted from the default audio device.  I was glad that my default device on this system is a set of headphones and I was not wearing them.
