Importing ITunes Playlist Folders to Media Centre
« on: December 14, 2019, 12:44:27 am »

"ITunes playlist folders" are a useful means of consolidating multiple playlists under one header.  Although media centre has an equivalent feature it calls "playlist groups", Media Centre doesn't appear to recognise the playlist tree structures I have in ITunes playlist folders.  The result is this component of my itunes setup does not sync with  media centre and I have to manually re-create these often complex ITunes playlist folders again in media centre as matching playlist groups.  This is very time consuming.  I have searched earlier posts for this topic and unfortuantely can't find anything.  Can anyone advise if this is achieveable through a setting somewhere in Media Centre or if there is a plug in available which addressses this requirement?  Many thanks, Michael Power.

In iTunes select the playlist you want to import into MC.
Still in iTunes, select File-Library-Export Playlist
Save as XML (chose where you want the file saved, just remember where) :-)
In Media center File-Import Playlist
Chose the XML file you just created.
This process works for me.

Thank you so much for responding to me.  My issue is with Itunes "Playlist Folders" which are file containers for other playlist folders which ultimately comprise individual playlists.  These create a tree style file structure within Itunes. Because I have many many playlists I have to group them under these playlist folders.  You cannot export playlist folders from Itunes as a playlist.  When you export the Itunes library to JRiver it does import the contents of these folder like a playlist.  The problem with this is you lose all the sub folders and just have a long list of tracks which then have to be reassigned to a "playlist group" within JRiver.  For me this is a time consuming and cumbersome rebuild in JRiver.  I am not sure if you can help me at this point.  I am new to JRiver and I find this forum difficult to navigate.  If you have any issue escalation suggestions or are able to forward this to a moderator I would be greatly appreciative.  Many thanks again, Kind Regards, Michael Power.

To other forum members or JRiver monitors I have not received a reply which is a solution to this issue and only one person responded which was generous of them. I would have thought importing an iTunes folder with tree structure in tact would be a fundamental piece of functionality for MC.  I hope somebody in this forum can help guide me to any potential solutions as this is key for me. Many thanks, Michael Power

Sorry, but I don't believe there's a way to import the playlist structure from iTunes into Media Center.  When we import playlists from the iTunes database, they're named as iTunes\[Name of Playlist] in Media Center.

Thanks Matt for the response.  This is quite an important feature for me.  Can you make sure it  is included as a MC Windows development priority.   Also, is there a paid for JRiver technical support option available outside of the technical forum??  Many thanks, Michael Power.

You talked me into it!

Next build of MC 26:
NEW: During iTunes library import, the full path of a playlist will be imported instead of only the name.

Thanks for the prod :)

Matt, this is great news!  Thank you so very very much.  Do you have an anticipated timing for the next MC 26 build??  Also, does this functionality extend into the auto-import/auto sync feature.  I can live without auto syncing of I-tunes folders but will mention it in case it is easiest incorporated now.

Please also keep an eye out for my other forum posts at:-

Many thanks again,

It was pointed out to me that there can be multiple levels of nesting in iTunes and we were only importing the first level.  We'll work on it some more next week.  Thanks!

Next build will hopefully handle infinite nesting.  Thanks for the help.

Matt, this is really exciting news. Thanks so much for your service. I will look forward greatly to the next build release of MC26  which I will test thoroughly re the playlist functionality and give you feedback on. Any ideas o  when the next release might occur? Also, I gave feedback to the developer of jriver remote 2 that the search function needed to include a search by track name and an all round  search function needed to be able to be engaged at any point in the app. I never heard back so I am not sure if I can expect this request to be acted on? If you have any suggestions about how best to pursue that I would also be grateful? Thanks again for your teriffic  support, kind regards michael power.

JRemote2 is still in the early days, and it's still actively being worked on to gain feature parity with the original JRemote. I imagine once that's done, other things (including user feedback) will be taken into consideration and the app will be improved.

Currently I try to port my iTunes library to MC31 (in trial mode). As “mike_power” mentioned in this thread https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=123351.0 , for me the feature of multiply nested playlist folder tree-branches is indispensable for organizing my content.

Towards the end of the threat, administrator “Matt” announced: “New build [MC26] is out, and hopefully working now! Thanks for all your help.”

That’s why I installed MC 31.00.10 x64, only to realize that it is not yet working as expected - unless of course that as someone totally unfamiliar with MC I didn’t use it correctly.

Any hints.?
