How do I remove stacks for songs?
« on: February 12, 2020, 11:18:46 am »

I have a lossless library, audio only. I don't use MC for photos or videos.   Somehow I've ended up with about 1/3 of my library songs "Stacked" with a corresponding mp3 file found somewhere else on my hard disk that I did not want in my library.. I really do not want to use "stacks" at all.  How do I remove all the mp3 version of these "stacked" songs from the library permanently and MC *NOT* add them back?   This is the 2nd time I've had to clean this up.   I am not watching any folders and I manually import files when I get new ones, or rip them directly into the library from CD. I don't know how this is happening and can't figure it out via wiki or digging through the options menus.

I want to get rid of "stacks" permanently and for them to never return.

Thanks

1st... Stop it happening: Do you do any hand held syncing or remote library streaming?

If yes, and this in turn requires an mp3 conversion, MC will auto create the stacks. Turn this off in options > File Location > Conversion Cache > Audio.
This is the only thing I can think of that might be causing this scenario for you.

2nd... Get rid of these cache files... Follow these steps very carefully:

  • Go to a view that lists all of your audio files
  • Enter the following expression into the search field in the top right:
Code: [Select]
-[Stack Top]=-1This will filter the list so only those that are stacked are listed.

  • Select all
  • Right Click > Stacks > Expand Stacks
  • Replace the expression in the search bar with the one below:
Code: [Select]
-[Stack Top]=-1 [file type]=mp3
  • Select all
  • Press Shift + Delete
  • Make very sure that "apply to all stack members" is NOT checked.
  • Press OK.

All stacks will now be gone, and hopefully, shouldn't return :)

If you are unsure about any of these steps, please ask first as the "Shift+Delete" will permanantly delete the mp3 files from disk once you press the OK button..

let MC do its thing and create the mp3 version

it is doing this because you have a client that can’t support lossless.   furthermore it will playback the best possible version to the client making the request

plex at al does this too.  makes perfect sense
