Question About Saving Thumbnails

I just imported 2.4.tb of music into my library which is located on an external hard drive.  All went well, and now JR is updating the thumbnails, which are located in the same folder as the album.
Does JR update the thumbnails from the library ?  That is can I disconnect the drive, and will JR continue updating ?
