edit settings JRiver from another computer?
« on: April 21, 2020, 12:44:25 pm »

My headless audio pc runs well but I want to be able to login remotely and edit settings from my normal desktop. Is that possible? Of course I can use a remote-desktop program like Teamviewer but would prefer a direct link in my network?

Linux is a Unix clone, and it has X11.  Unix and X have been doing this for more than 30 years.

Google xdmcp.  What you want is exactly what it does.  If that's too metal for you, there are lots of teamview alternatives that run locally, like xvnc.  Some distros even have those utils built in (look for a screen sharing setting), so the kids can avoid learning anything about X.  ;)

With X-windows you don't even to launch the entire desktop; you can export the display of a single app, like MC, to another X server.  So if your regular machine is also Linux (or a PC with a X server running) you could remotely launch the MC interface on your server and the UI would appear on the machine you're using.  Google the DISPLAY environment variable.

The miracles of old technology!

Good luck.
