Situation

* Define a custom field
* Set edit type to check
* go to some views and edit a few items to set this value (you'll see a checkbox you can check)
* Define a view that uses panes and includes that field in the "Show Categories in this order"
* View filters will show the raw values (e.g. 1, 0, unassigned) resulting in mild confusion

Essentially it would be nice to have a yes/no (boolean) user experience, whether that is via a boolean data type or just extending this use of the "edit type" to more places.
