Video playback on Raspberry Pi 4B?
« on: July 22, 2019, 10:12:53 am »

It would appear that plain mp4 file playback should not pose too much of a problem, seeing as VLC plays them without a hitch. When I try to play back a video file in MC25, all I get is a green screen and flawless audio output.
Is there a timeline for this?

Running MC 25.0.80 on a 4 GB Pi4 using Buster 4.19.58-v71+ #1245

You may need to increase gpu_mem.

Thanks for the hint - but I thought of that, too, and have it set at 256 which should be plenty enough, right?

Also, Kodi plays the video files just fine.

And yes, I do have

framebuffer_depth=32
framebuffer_ignore_alpha=1

in config.txt

Log file in the attachment. Just a brief attempt of video playback in Standard View.

We've identified the problem with video playback on the Pi4, and unfortunately its a bit of a complex problem, so it'll be a bit longer until we can get a fix out.

Thanks a lot for the heads up; actually, I am not in a hurry. It's good to know that the problem has been identified, and that there's at least hope for a fix to come.

Any chance at all of seeing this issue resolved in MC26?

I'm having the same problem on a Raspberry Pi 3.

Pi4 video playback is now supported in MC26 (as of 26.0.82). Pi3 video capability is severely limited and likely not going to work.

I see. Might be time to upgrade to the Pi4 given how cheap these are.
How functional is video on the Pi4 ? Can it play HD or 3RD blu-ray ISO ? What about 4K HDR ?

It can play HD just fine. 3D and HDR is not currently supported, and for 4K it probably doesn't have the performance currently.

Thanks. Is there any plan to add 3D to the Pi4 video driver ? I have an old 3D HDTV that needs a device to play Blu-ray ISO from my NAS.

I probably don't have the need for 4K HDR support on the Pi4 as both my 4K displays have more powerful x64 PCs attached to them.

Does video work on any other ARM device ? I have an Odroid XU4 also.

3D on Pi seems very doubtful, sorry.

Video should work on all ARM devices with a proper OpenGL ES 3.0 driver.

Understand. 3D is a dead format. I don't have too many 3D discs. Still would be nice to be able to continue to play them on the old TV.

Proper, driver and Odroid probably don't belong in the same sentence. I just tried and MC25 doesn't even display the menus on the Odroid XU4 with Ubuntu 18.04.4LTS, just white stuff on top and left sides. The Odroid video driver stuff in general is pretty messed up, as are other video drivers on it. I have even seen the RS232 get messed up and my X10 home automation stop working. Probably won't buy another Odroid product. Though I still wish there was a way to get MC working on it.
