Media Center crash with Aeon visual [Solved]
« on: August 24, 2020, 02:36:58 pm »

Hi

I have upgraded to version 26 and all works ok apart from Soundspectrum's Aeon visualization plugin.

Tried the recommended procedure to reinstall JRiver but this did not fix the issue. I can confirm if I deinstall Soundspectrum's Aeon visualization plugin it all works fine. If I reinstall Soundspectrum's Aeon visualization plugin when playing music in playing now if I right mouse click to select a visual Media Center just crashes.

I am running Windows 10, JRiver version 26.0.106 (64 bit) and trying to install latest Aeon version 4.1.1

Looking at Soundspectrum documentation at

https://www.soundspectrum.com/aeon/Documentation/version-history.html

They had two fixes for JRiver back in June 2018 and January 2018 so I was wasn't expecting an issue with this plugin.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work please?

Have you tried testing the 32-bit build of Media Center 26 and see if the crash happens there too?

Just deinstalled 64 bit version and installed 32bit version of JRiver 26.0.106. Unfortunately same issue. Fresh install works ok, then install Soundspectrum's Aeon visualization plugin which now installs 32 bit version of plugin reboot PC, start Media Center as soon as right mouse click to try and select a visual Media Center crashes  :(

Do you also have Milkdrop installed?

No, Milkdrop is not installed. Just JRiver version 26.0.106 and only the one third party visual plug-in Soundspectrum's Aeon. Not even installed any other visuals from Soundspectrum yet as Aeon is my favorite.

Fair enough. I've had this issue before, and removing Milkdrop cured it for me. (I would love for that thing to be properly fixed for use with MC).

The only other thing I would have suggested, you have already done... i.e. reinstall MC, then reinstall Aeon.

I didn't update Soundspectrum this time around, so am a little behind...
Aeon v4.1.0
GForce v5.8.2
are both working correctly on two PCs here.

I'm out of ideas, sorry.

It is something to do with Admin user. Had a more detailed play and found the following.

Install JRiver v26 and Aeon from Admin Windows Account. Obvisouly have to install these from the Admin account.

The issue happens when I use JRiver on my non-admin account which is all the time (I only use the Admin account for installs). I have two scenarios.

When I log on as non-admin and run JRiver Windows pops a window wanting to run as the Admin account. I have two options.

1) Say yes and enter Admin userid and password. If I do this JRiver crashes when using Aeon visual

2) Say no, JRiver complains "cannot register controls", but starts and plays music and Aeon visual

The trick seems to be how do I install from the Admin account but run from non-admin account without getting that Windows security pop-up window wanting the Admin password?

Why not install from non admin account and provide the admin password when requested? Does it behave any differently then?

OK, I have solved the issue. The UAC prompt was caused by the preivous version still being started at PC boot from the registry keys. So when I started V26 by clicking on the V26 icon it caused the UAC Window. I have deleted the previous version registry keys with Sysinternals Autoruns and I can start V26 64-bit OK now from my non-admin account and run Aeon visual without crashing JRiver Media Center.  :)
