Scaling Issue
« on: October 09, 2020, 03:28:08 pm »

So, I use my PC to watch movies on my 4k TV, and I'm having issues with it. I have the scaling in Windows set to 250% so everything is a decent size, and whenever I go to watch a movie, JRiver is scaled so that the movie is a quite a bit lower resolution than it's supposed to be, so it appears a bit blurry. Any help?

Attached is an example with MadVR stats showing the resolution when playing back a 4k Blu-Ray (Casino Royale).

This seems to be fixed if I disable my main monitor (1440p, 100% scale) then open JRiver, but I'd rather not do that. Is there a way to bypass this or do I have to disable my main monitor?

Does that movie have anything in the [Playback Info] tag? If so, delete the contents of that tag and try again.

There isn't.

As I said, if I disable my primary monitor, it fixes the issue but I'd rather not do that.

Are the TV/monitors hooked up to the PC or an AVR? Many AVRs will use the EDID info for the least capable device. I don't know how it works with both connected directly to the PC.

Did you try removing any settings changes you've made?

I've heard many reports about scaling issues with MadVR when using Windows10 scaling and multiple monitors. I've never heard a solution.

You should try:

1. Using the zoom function in MC to see if you can restore it to full size
2. Check your MadVR display settings
3. Using Red October Standard instead of Red October High Quality in MC
4. Ask the question on the Doom9 forums for MadVR; the author (madshi) might be able so shed some light on it.

Another thing to try is to set your TV as primary display and your 1440p monitor as secondary display

Hooked directly to my graphics card.

Yup, happens with default settings.

The issue is with JRiver itself, I think as the interface is blurry/pixelated if opened on the main monitor.

Did you try setting video in MC to Red October Std?

No, but I can't use that as it doesn't support HDR.

No, but I can't use that as it doesn't support HDR.

Regardless, you need to try it as a troubleshooting step.  It is essential to identify if the problem only occurs when using MadVR, or at other times.

Try with the video mode set to RO Standard.

Also, please explain exactly what happens when you try and use the zoom function during MadVR playback.

RO Standard does not fix the issue. I'm pretty sure it's an issue with JRiver and how it handles scaling, as JRiver's interface is blurry as well.

All using zoom does is zoom in the scaled, lower resolution image.

Also, if I set my main display to the 4k TV, it fixes this, but again, I'd rather just open up JRiver and drag it over to the TV once I get my movie picked out, if possible.

The MC interface is independent of the video playback provided by MadVR. They are two separate programs, separate executables, written by different entities.  MadVR is bundled with MC.  Both might be responding to a driver or Windows issue. This is supported by your comment that changing your Windows display settings or default monitor fixes the issue.

Some followup questions:

Are you confirming that you actually tested RO Standard and that it behaved the same as MadVR?

What graphics card are you using in the PC?

Please show screenshots of your MC Video Options, including all settings under Display Settings, and also screenshots of all your MadVR Display Modes settings.

Also post a screenshot of the MadVR diagnostic screen when you are playing a 1080p video, like a bluray rip.

1. Yes I am confirming this.

2. A RTX 3090

Mixing different scaling values on the windows desktop is not supported in MC (eg. 100% on one screen and 250% one another). You can try to work around the issue by ensuring that the screen with the higher DPI scaling is the primary screen, and thus viewed by Windows as the primary scale.

Three things:

1. You missed a screenshot:
" and also screenshots of all your MadVR Display Modes settings."
That meant click Open MadVR settings, expand all the monitors under Devices, and show screenshots of the "display modes" tabs.

2. Also show us your options for Options->Tree & View->Full Screen

3. I'm wondering why, in your original post in the thread, you're complaining about 4k display (which is clearly not working correctly) but you make no mention of 1080p display (which is also not scaling correctly).  MadVR is scaling your 1080p content to 2560x1440, which is wrong for a 4k display.  If you knew that was a problem and just didn't mention it, fine. But if you're NOT seeing a problem, when MadVR indicates there is one, it makes me curious.

Try adjusting the option I mention in #2 to explicitly select your TV, at 3840x2160 if it is not already that way.

1.

2. This is an odd one. If I open JRiver with my 1440p monitor set as the primary, it only shows resolutions from my first monitor, not the second (ignore the 5120x2880 ones, that's Dynamic Super Resolution from Nvidia for games).

3.My 4k TV is indeed working correctly, it's just that JRiver is using the resolution from my main monitor for some reason when I drag it onto my TV when started on my 1440p monitor. Here's a screenshot of JRiver working correctly when the 4k TV is set as the primary display: I don't have any 1080p display. Setting my 4k TV as the main display in Windows fixes this, so I guess I'll do that from now on.

Yup, this seems like it's the best work around for me at the moment. Thanks.

I don't see anything wrong with your setup, although I would probably do it differently.

2. This is an odd one. If I open JRiver with my 1440p monitor set as the primary, it only shows resolutions from my first monitor, not the second

I think this #2 is probably at the core of the issue.

As for what I might do differently, you could try disabling mode switching inside MadVR, and let MC do the mode switching. This is generally more reliable, I find. But based on #2, I'm doubt that it would do any good in your case.

What you see in #2 is that MC is seeing only certain resolutions, and not the correct ones. Whether this is a Windows/driver problem, or an MC problem, only Hendrik could say.  But as long as MC cannot see the correct resolutions for the monitor, there are going to be issues.

The only other idea I have is to play with one of the settings in the Compatibility tab for the MC application.  There is an option called "Override high DPI scaling behavior" and perhaps one of the settings there could improve this. And perhaps it it might have a different effect it if you combined this with letting MC set the display mode, as I described above.

Good luck.
