Recording Rule Tag "Series" not working as expected [Solved]
« on: November 13, 2020, 08:27:29 am »

I've got a recording rule for name contains "Evil Lives Here" or series name contains "Evil Lives Here". Lately it's been recording shows with series name "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death", so I added a recording rule Tag "Series:Evil Lives Here". But it's not working, the recording happens but the series name is still "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death". I thought it would get rid of the colon and Shadows of Death, but it does not. I have to go back and manually edit to just "Evil Lives Here".

Are you saying that you want to record shows with series name "Evil Lives Here" but not ones with series name "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death"?

Yes, I do want it to record the shows. I also want it to change the series name from "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death" to just "Evil Lives Here". So I added the tag in the recording rule "series: Evil Lives Here". But after the recording happens, the series is still "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death", like the tag in the rule did nothing.

I wonder if an online update occurred after recording.  I can do a test recording and see how it works.  For the same show, however, I wont see it showing until next Thursday.

They are two different TV Series though, so if you change the Series name "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death" to "Evil Lives Here", any metadata lookup will be wrong.

"Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death" is, or will be, a spinoff series of "Evil Lives Here". According to TMDb, it starts in 2021, so you shouldn't have any episodes recording for it yet... No, wait, it seems IMDb is wrong, and there have already been three episodes aired.

I also noted that while TVDB has four episode listed, including an upcoming one, TMDB only has one episode listed. So lookups for the later episodes will fail in MC, at this time.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13440300/

I would be setting up a separate Recording Rule for the new Series, if you want to do metadata lookups later on.

What's the point of user added recording rule tags if MC isn't applying them AFTER it does its auto import (with get movie and tv info)?

I am aware these shows are technically two different series, but I just want them lumped together. Honestly, I have never done metadata look ups on tv shows later because the info is complete enough, at least for my 'record, watch, delete' approach.

MC loads new recordings into the Library without running Auto Import, and doesn't wait for Auto Import to run to update tags that are defined in the Recording Rule. Yaobing was just suggesting that if Auto Import ran, and it ran "Get Movie & TV Info" that may have updated the [Series] field after your tagging rule had set it correctly. But "Get Movie & TV Info" is not run as part of the TV recording process, and Auto Import should not (won't) pick up a TV show that is already in the Library. Fair enough, regarding the two shows thing.

I have Recording Rules that set the Series tag as part of the recording process, and they work. In fact, I set the Series and Season, and then use that for the [Filename (path)] tag to move the files, in quite a few rules. Two ran last night and worked fine.

But I'm not sure if the EPG data already had a Series value or not. It looks like the EPG data for the program has been updated to the values I wanted. But if it was, I didn't know MC did that... Nope, in the second recording the [Series] field was set correctly, but the EPG wasn't updated. So the Series must have been correct for the first recording in the EPG already (it varies).

I also just ran a short recording just now where the EPG already had a value in the Series field, and I changed that value using the Recording Rules tagging, and used that for a [Filename (path)] tag. That all worked correctly. MC overwrote the original [Series] name with my new Series name, and moved the file to the correct location based on that Series name.

So, it still seems to be working for me.

Maybe the colon in the name is causing an issue? I just set up a recording where the Series include a colon. It will finish by 10am my time, in about 35 minutes. Prompt me if I don't report whether it worked.

My scheduled recording completed last night.  It worked as expected.  "Evil Lives Here: Shadows of Death" episode "Buried Dreams" was recorded, and series name renamed to "Evil Lives Here".

Did you check the checkbox "Skip for files that already have a value in this field"?  This box should not be checked if you want to change the value.

I'm looking at the recording rule and do not see that check box/option anywhere?

EDIT: Found the option by editing the recording rule tag. And that box was checked. So we can close this as solved!

Edit the actual Tag rule.  In the box under "Apply These Tags (optional):", select "Series: Evil Lives Here", and click Edit button on the right hand side.
