These are the quick and dirty instructions for using MC to serve a TiVo with HMO.  If you're reading these after about April 18, 2003, please check Help in MC and you may find more details.

Please download and install JRiver Media Center 9.0.147 or above.  www.mediajukebox.com/mc has a download link.  Newer versions (though possibly less stable) may be posted in a thread near the top of this board.

Then import your music and pictures into MC.  Organize as you like.

Then run the Media Server component.  You'll find it in the Windows/Start/Programs/Media Center 9.0 menu.  Or you can start it from Media Center by going to Tools/More Tools/Media Server.

When it starts it may be minimized.  Open it and set it up.  Before you start "sharing", you must disable the TiVo Beacon (this should change in build 146 so it works with the Beacon on).

Shutting down the TiVo server does not shut down the beacon.  You can kill the beacon process, or in Control Panel / Administrative Tools you'll find component services, and it can be disabled there.

"Strangely enough, it probably does work fine using the TiVo beacon and our server, the beacon protocol doesn't send much info (and right now we don't change the defaults). This won't work in the future though.

It is certainly possible, but I don't think TiVo will open up their protocol enough to do that.  Serious copyright questions.  Maybe some day.

Is HMO installed on the TiVo?  Does it work with the TiVo Publisher?  Do you see a Music or Photos option there?

That looks like a normal start for the Media Server, so I don't think that's the problem.

If you run Media Center on that machine, do you have a library of music and images?  You need to have imported some media into Media Center.

I've tried port 80 and port 8080 ... doesnt matter, if I choose to use the TiVo settings, the server crashes as soon as I start it up.

Any Ideas ?

UPDATE:  Went a created a NEW Library .. with only 50 files in it ... that one shares JUST FINE ... When I try to share my 26K files, it shoots craps  ... Any ideas ??

We'll check this, but are you sure it crashes?  If it hangs, it may still be loading.

We haven't tested it with large libraries, so it's possible there is a problem.

It may not be how many files, but what kind of files they are.  We filter out files the TiVo can't play.  Maybe we've done something wrong there.

1. The "autoresponse thread" is what Media Server uses to automatically identify itself to clients.
It has nothing to do with the TiVo features of Media Server.

2. Media Center allows you to create different libraries. I have a library of ape files for home listening,
a library of mp3 files for listening at work across the network, a library of pictures to share with my friends, etc.

3. Are you relying on autodetection of the TiVo or are you entering an IP address? Whichever you are doing, try the other.

4. How are you connecting to port 81, via a browser? In any case, the error message is outdated and I'll fix it. You are connecting to the Media Center portion of Media Server, not the TiVo portion. (Media Server was designed to share music between two Media Center/Media Jukebox systems, the TiVo is a recent addition).

As a new Tivo HMO user I'm anxious to try this out tonight.

I was wondering if you could clarify a couple things for me.

You recommend disabling the Tivo Publisher or conflicts could occur. However I prefer the Tivo method of navigating for pictures(by folder), but the Media Center method for music files. Can I run both?? OR is there a way to create an image list based on folder?? I didn't see on if there is

Unfortunately, TiVo can only take .mp3 files.  I say unfortunately, because about 70% of my library is in .ape format!  What this means is a gigantic bulk conversion and maintenance of duplicate (.ape and .mp3) files - sort of like a parallel universe (lossy vs. lossless).

Ideally, TiVo would allow us to add plug-ins like MC.  However, given the fact that the majority of their users are fairly technically unsophisticated, it's unlikely to happen.  Now, that idea about being able to play recorded TV shows on MC via your home network...THAT's interesting.

This is actually in a state of change right now, but you will be able to run using Media Center alone, or Media
Center with the TiVo Beacon, or Media Center and the TiVo Publisher on the same machine.

For now, you can uninstall the TiVo software if you want.

Conversion from any format we play to MP3 should be working in this build:

It's untested, so please let us know what doesn't work.

You will need to check the option in Media Server and then stop and restart Media Server.

I attempted to serve music to TiVo just now.  I get a msg:  "Failed to bind.  Please enter an available port number or choose automatic port selection in Network options."

Where are these options??  Any suggestions how to correct??

There may be other problems, but "failure to bind" means something else is using the port.  Music sharing software?  Web server?

This might be confusing for a couple of days. If you can't get it to work, then do the following:
1. Make sure Media Server is not running.
2. netstat -an
3. Start Media Server
4. netstat -an

Then copy-and-paste the results from 2, 3, 4, and the Media Server configuration here.

The new version is getting closer...but I did notice some issues:

- I was not able to get mp3s (these were native mp3s) to play in shuffle mode.  You can play them in normal order, but when you change the play options to shuffle on, the TiVo indicates an error message about not being able to locate the file.  If you switch it back to normal mode, it plays again.  This happened in every "list" that I tried.  I saw some other messages here or on Tivocommunity.com that others were experiencing this behavior.

- When I looked at the jpgs that I had imported, they appeared with extra black bars on the left and right (most were 1600x1200).  The black bars were roughly 5% of the screen on each side.  This does not occur when using the TiVo publisher, as they appear fullscreen there.  It appears that the rest of the image is being squeezed.

- I had difficulty still with the server bindings and it not recognizing my PC (had to set server ip manually many times), but it sounds like some backend work is being done there.

Does everyone else experience the same issues (particularly the first two)?

I don't know if this a bug or not but here's the problem I had getting images to show up correctly on the Tivo.  I created a new view scheme under Images called Location which is sorting by filename.  I then pointed this to the My Pictures folder where all my images are grouped in different folders.  On the Tivo, I was only able to view pictures that were in subfolders in the My Pictures folder.  I couldn't view any pictures which were in the root My Pictures folder.

I really AM trying to like this product, but I can't get the server to work with my TiVo. Honestly, that is the major appeal to me and would be my deciding factor in purchasing MJ.

I've completely uninstalled TiVo Desktop (Publisher). No TiVoBeacon running under "processes" in Win XP.

I was finally able to get TiVo to talk to the MJ server by keying into TiVo the IP address of the machine the server is running on - in this case, 192.168.0.147. Prior to that, TiVo wouldn't see the server on it's own.

TiVo DOES show me sharing music. In fact, when I go into "My Music on...", I can see the standard MJ folders - Smartlists, Playlists, etc. I can even browse them and see all of my music. My collection is quite large, but no matter what song I try to play on TiVo, I get the standard message that TiVo gives when it can't talk to the server - "can't play song, file has been removed, etc..." - even though all the files are there.

When I walk back to the PC where the server is running, I see the Media Server giving these messages:

What does "TCD_ID" and "SW_VER" refer to? My TiVo ID # and my TiVo software version? Obviously these are ok,  I have HMO and it does work when using TiVo Desktop.

Hi TiVotion.

First, make sure you are running the latest version put out tonight. Start Media Center, do help->about and make sure it says Media Center 9.0.145

If you run the latest version with the TiVo Beacon from TiVo, you may not need to enter the IP address, otherwise you do.

Check your library in Media Server->Settings and start Media Center and make sure you are using the same library. Play one of the songs and make sure it plays. You may have a messed up database.

Finally, the Tivo_TCD_ID and TiVo_SW_VER are http headers that the TiVo puts out that Media Server doesn't recognize. It doesn't mean anything: the headers contain no pertinent information and we just ignore them.

I haven't tried the newest version of MC that was put out tonight, but, I did discover something interesting.

A couple of messages up in this same thread, someone posted about how they have the same problem that I described when they try to play back songs in "shuffle" mode. That's exactly what was happening to me. I had shuffle play turned on (on TiVo), and TiVo was saying it couldn't find any of the files. When I turned shuffle play off, I can play the songs back in native (MC) order now.

I will download and install the latest version (tonight's version) of MC, but, is this "shuffle play" thing a bug that can be fixed?

Another thing with 9.0.145.  I was viewing pictures and any attempt to change the slide show settings caused the TiVo to report the picture no longer existed and usually boot me completely back out of the server.  Also trying to do sorting or grouping (which don't work) occasionally did the same thing.


I tried to play some WAV files and noticed they didn't work, when I looked at the server I saw tons of windows asking me to install LAME MP3 encoder.  I thought this was strange since I thought an MP3 encoder was built into Media Center.  
Anyway I let it install the LAME MP3 encoder and played a WAV file which sounded all high pitched and shrill (it was converted to 192 kbps stereo when it was a 32 kbps mono wav file) and then My TiVo rebooted!!!  Bad. Bad.

Also there was a crash in Media Server

I thought a follow up was in order.

First of all, this product is FAR superior to the Tivo Desktop software. And as previously mentioned you guys ROCK!!  

I downloaded and installed 9.0.144 last night. I see there is a 145 available so some of these issues might be solved.

I did have some trouble getting the media server to work. After installation (before rebooting), it started okay. Then after the first reboot, I got the "failed to bind" error message. After checking to make sure something else wasn't using that port (nothing was) I rebooted again and it worked fine. Several reboots and it's still working okay.  Frustrating and strange, but no big deal since it's working now.

I also had to put in the IP address of the media server for Tivo to find it. Once it did, it seemed to work okay. It shows the IP address when I go into the Music & Photos menu on the TIVO then it flashes "please wait" and a couple seconds later it shows "Computername Music" & "Computername Photos" etc..

Music playback worked great. I did notice however that changes I made to the library (playlists, tag info etc...) didn't show up on TIVO until I stopped and restarted the media server. I don't suppose there is anyway around this? Once I stopped and restarted the server, those changes I made showed up right away.

I did have some issues with image playback. I created a view based on filename and pointed it to my images folder. This showed up fine. I didn't try any other views from Tivo, but they did show up.

The larger pictures I had (1600 pixels & wider) appeared to have black lines on the sides and they took FOREVER to load. Okay, not forever, but about 3 seconds each. Is this a function of the media server? or Tivo? I noticed on the Tivo Desktop software they had a cache file that was quite full when I removed the software (after only one day) I'm not sure what this was for, but the image playback in the TIVO software was much quicker than in media server. At one point, I actually got a "server failed to respond" message from Tivo while the media server was trying to display an image folder with a few hundred images in it.

These are minor issues but the biggest issue for me is image playback performance. If there is anything that can be done to improve this performance, that would be great.

I'm anxious to install the latest version tonight. Now with the built in on the fly conversion, I'm going to have to decide what format to story my music in...decisions, decisions....

I downloaded and installed 9.0.144 last night. I see there is a 145 available so some of these issues might be solved.

This should be fixed in 145, though Morec says it is still not working for him. Also, if a program is killed,
sometimes you have to wait for the socket binding to timeout before you can bind to it, and it make take several
minutes (or a reboot).

I'll look into the black lines. The speed problem is converting the 1600 pixel file to something that fits on a TV screen.
Media Server caches thumbnails, but not TV sized pictures. I'll see about caching these.

Sorry if this has been explained, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

I finally got Media Server showing up fine on my Tivo, but I have questions on how to get the files to display as I want them to.  I have added a view scheme of "Location", which mimics somewhat how Tivo Server would display on my Tivo but I cannot get Media Center/Server to display the artist name WITH the trank name at once on the Tivo.  Here's an example of how my files are set up:

Music\Pop 1990's\[artist - trackname.mp3]

When Tivo Server would display them, it would show them as the above filename "artist - trackname".  Now, with Media Center, all I get is "trackname".  Since many various artists are in that directory, I want to be able to view the selections as the Tivo Server allowed.  Is this possible somehow?  I really don't want to add another level under each "pop" directory.  Meaning, I would prefer it NOT display as:

Music\Pop 1990's\artist1\trackname1 , trackname2 , etc
Music\Pop 1990's\artist2\trackname1 , trackname2 , etc

But rather:

Music\Pop 1990's\artist1 - trackname , artist2 - trackname , artist3 - trackname

I hope that makes sense.  If you need any more clarification, feel free to ask.  Thanks in advance.  I'm really liking Media Center but my purchase of it depends on the ability to display my audio files in the way described above.

I have now spent a little while exploring JRiver Media Center. (at work...thank god i my cube is way in the back .  The views are incredible!  I can't wait to get home to play with this stuff!  It looks like the tagging uses something akin to XML?  if that is the case I want to suggest adding the ability to create custom fields with this I plan on being able to sort my music like this: Play all Songs from 1984 by a female artist who is blonde  The configurability of this thing is amazing.  I can do this now with keywords and comments but I'd love to be able to add fields on the fly to the MJMD tagging.

In short order I expect this software to completely alter the way I listen to music.  

When converting to mp3 on the fly what bitrate does it use? Is this something I can tweak?  

While editing this post I played around with the views a bit more...man they are cool!  And so quickly configurable!  After posting this I'm going straight to purchase.  Keep up the good work guys.  You'll get nothing but good word of mouth from me as long as you keep up the good customer interaction and support.

If you try 145 and the TiVo beacon, then it may detect it automatically. Let me know.

Just some info.  I ran Media Server 1.0.159.0 which came with MC9 9.0.145 and told it to run in HMO mode on 8080 (with beacon on 2190).

This will open listening ports on TCP 8080 and TCP 2190.

Automatic detection works by broadcasting on UDP port 2190.  I did some packet sniffing and didn't see any broadcasts going out on UDP port 2190 with media server running in beacon mode.  It also doesn't open a listening UDP 2190 port.  Without the UDP ports and broadcast, automatic detection won't work.

The TiVoBeacon service handles this functionality, but like I stated in the other thread, Media Server has to tell TiVoBeacon (via TCP port 8100 [protocol unknown]) that the server is up and running for TiVoBeacon to send out broadcasts informing the TiVo that the server is up.

The broadcast protocol for autodetection is described in "Section 3.3 Broadcast-based Discovery" in the "TiVo Connect Automatic Machine Discovery Protocol Specification v1.5.1" at http://www.tivo.com/developer

Thanks for the details. This problem will be fixed in tonights build. JRiver's Beacon replacement does not attempt to do the UDP broadcast. Media Server now (correctly) uses the TiVo Beacon (that does have the broadcast functionality) if the TIVo Beacon is running, and falls back to our own beacon if it isn't. Hopefully this should set things straight.

It should have worked yesterday, but I was looking for the beacon in the wrong place (I was using an older version of TiVo Publisher).
