RTX3090 First Thoughts
« on: December 20, 2020, 04:35:25 am »

I needed a new GPU for Divince Resolve as my existing GTX1660TI just did not have enough VRAM for 4K editing.  I could not get a RTX3080 for love or money so after selling a kidney I got a RTX3090.  Works well for Divince Resolve but.... how does it go with MC for video playback?

Short Answer: Overkill and Overpriced for a HTPC GPU

The good news, is you can crank up MadVR's settings to MAX for all normal UHD BD without issue including HRD Tone Mapping.... but,

Longer Answer:  This mighty card is still humbled however when playing 50/60fps UHD HDR.  There is only a couple of commercial releases in this format (Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, and Gemini Man) but I've now a Sony FX6 shooting UHD HDR @ 50fps so playback of this format is of interest to me.  I had no issue in playing this HFR HDR UHD material with Medium Chroma Scaling (instead of Very High) in MadVR to prevent dropping frames.  It looked great and I was pleased but after a while I noticed the smell of toasty dust and a warm heater at my feet.  Turns out even with these settings the RTX3090 was pretty well maxed out @ 95% ish GPU and a GPU Temp hitting 80c+.  Fan noise is noticeable at a metre but it is not too bad and I don't think you would hear it watching a movie in a HTPC with the vol at normal levels.

Conclusion:  Absolutely ridiculous for HTPC Playback for all but HFR HDR UHD playback.  The only real advantage of the GTX3090 over the GTX3080 is extra VRAM (24GB vs 10GB) but this extra RAM is not required for Video Playback in MC RO HQ.  When availability and prices settle down, I'm going to look at replacing my GTX1660TI with something like the RTX3060TI which I think will be a value proposition for HTPC playback in the new generation range.

Thanks for posting this jmone.

Any issues with getting correct framerates (23.976 or 59.94) or anything else? Does 3D still work or has the driver killed that off?

My best wishes for your future reduced-capacity blood filtration.

No issue with various frame rates.  In the nVidia (Studio) driver, there is no longer "Adaptive" for power mgt so I just left it on "Normal" which seemed to work fine.  I did have to still change the Vertical Sync to "ON" or else I saw the micro judder issue with BD Playback.

I've not tried 3D on this PC but since Frame Packed was killed off a year or so ago, I guess that using Side By Side or Top over Bottom will still be the answer for those with a 4K display and 1080p 3D Content.

Top/bottom is better ... then OSD playback controls are still usable through 3D glasses ... washed out as only one eye can see it ... but still usable

i have this card and agree - overkill for an htpc but mine serves double duty and also plays video games.   there, this card excels!

the 3D is of course removed from the drivers but O/U works fine.  there is a distribution out there to restore 3D Vision and seems well supported - look for Helix Mod - 3D fix.  i have not tried it because O/U works fine for me

for micro stutter, i didn’t have to play with vsync.   i had to change the present frames in advance setting in madvr to 1 from default of 8.  had to do this on my 1650S card as well, but not my 1080Ti.

great card - but much cheaper solutions for an htpc.

I wonder where MadVR is going. It seems counterproductive to offer it for free when it can hamper MadVR Envy sells (which is totally undertandable ... and i actually dont mind paying for MadVR software if its development continues).

While latest version still offer large improvements over you stock TV upscaling/HDR ... it seems at top level its starts falling behind. Latest post in AVS forum seems to suggests Lumagen had caught up and surpass MadVR.

While price of 3090 is not comparable to Lumagen or MadVR Envy ... its a significant chunk ... wonder if its better now to go that rout now :/

I totally agree. For audio only I would have only my Media Server and Audio Endpoint Device - "My Devialet". My large Media Renderer is in principle for madVR with a large video card. Also madVR requires Windows and does not work on macOS or Linux.

So I am asking me the same - what's the future strategy upscaling/HDR...?

So if you went with a madVR Envy or Lumagen, what would be the pipeline from source to screen?  If you were to use MC, I assume you would feed the video out (HDMI) of a PC into the lumagen/envy and then the HDMI out on that to your AVR - or you would put it between the AVR and TV/projector?

In that case how would you configure MC - would you use RO Standard or RO HQ?  If standard, then HDR encoded video would not work as I don’t believe it’s passed through.  Using HQ (madVR) would seem redundant....

I will say the 3090 combined with the last version of madVR is excellent.  And cheaper than either the envy or the lumagen.

A post from Madshi suggested double madVR works and gives better results as using HTPC(ROHQ)  --> AVR --> Envy --> PC ... but was silent on what algos you would use on the PC vs the Envy (note: I'm not in the market for an Envy so will be sticking with my HTPC).  The next GPU upgrade I'll look at in due course will be if swapping out the 1660Ti's I have in my 2 x HTPC is worth it, but I'm waiting to see where madVR lands with the current developments.

Hi.
I have madVR Envy pro and I still use my pc as media server. My chain is pc (RTX2060) with JRiver MC27 and madVR -> processor (Trinnov A16) -> madVR Envy pro -> Sony vpl-vw870es projector.
Basically I use two gpu: the RTX2060 with madVr to upscale res, chroma, luma and for dithering algo; Envy pro for dynamic tone mapping and 3dlut color calibration. The results are amazing.
Naturally I set madVR HDR and color calibration on passtrough and I use the only Nvidia driver that works with HDR passtrough (442.74).

at least HTPC madVR is not going anywhere as per madshi

madshi himself not sure how it will proceed ... but at least it has future
