IMPOSSIBLE TO BACKUP VIEW-INFO WITH DATABASE!?
« on: April 08, 2003, 12:41:44 am »

Two things about the view-infos:

1.) ViewInfo for the explorer gets written to registry, but when I change to another task & return to explorer later, the view-info reverts to default, doesn't use the saved one.

2.) By saving the viewinfo in the registry instead of a file, it will not be possible to backup the view-info with the corresponding database, isn't this somehow stupid?
After a system-crash I can restore database, but have to redo all view-infos (just if I am someoneelse, that doesn't know how to save reg-entries )

Any chance to fix this before going gold?

Am I really the only one that is interested in keeping old custom views when restoring a database.

Imagine: Your machine breaks down, you re-install, restore the database & have to rebuild every view sheme, since they were saved in the lost regisry.

THAT'S REALLY NO GOOD!

We decided to make view info user-specific instead of library-specific.  Our thinking is that it's probably only a few minutes work to get most of the views how you like them.

Thanks Raist.

I'll definitely add my vote to being able to do something like this.
Maybe not save them in the library but have an option to export ALL settings, views, library etc into one big file that we can restore.
Whether or not they like it, I think most power users end up having to format their system a couple of times a year at least just due to it becoming unstable etc.
I'd LOVE to be able to export all my settings, my library etc and then just re-import it after the format and then have it all to how it was working before as if I'd never had to format.

This is something I wish ALL programs had as it would mean setting up a system after a crash, format etc would be sooo much easier and faster.

Matt,

I agree with Raistlin 2000, especially after introducing this new function "Reset all views to default".

It may take a few minutes to rebuild them, if you have just a few simple views, it might take more time if you build complex views - the more user defined fields you introduce, the more complex views might become! Remember: Once you offer a tool, users are going to stretch their usage far beyond the programmer's imagination!

Samples:
One view named "Travel" looked like that: Genre>Continent>Country>Album>Name (Travel>North America>USA>California>Golden Gate Bridge Sunset!)

Another view scheme group named "Arts":
Arts
>3D Art
>Clip Art
>Cover Art
>Graphic Art
>Paintings>Artist>Name
>Paintings>Country>Gallery>Artist>Name
>Paintings>PaintStyle>Artist>Name
>Paintings>Movement>Artist>Name
>Paintings>Collection>Artist>Name
>Paintings>Year>Artist>Name
>Poster Art

Another one named "Composer":
Composer>Album>Name>Orchestra>Conductor>Soloist

Although I saved "View Info" in the registry, they could not be restored after clicking "Reset all views to default"

So there should be some mechanism to backup certain settings and views and being able to restore them!

In a similar direction goes the following: As a beta tester from time to time you really have to deinstall and reinstall MC (JimH often recommends it!). MC then wipes out the folders MegaSkin, MiniSkin, Visualizations, so that everything downloaded from J River into those folders needs to be downloaded again, if you do not backup yourself by hand!
You may also argue here that it takes only a few minutes to download again, but they can become very long few minutes. Why not backup or leave stuff downloaded by the user and wipe out the core stuff only!
