4k hdr, how can I see if JRiver it out correctly.
« on: August 03, 2021, 02:41:36 pm »

I bought a 4K Projector. I have a media player, Zidoo Z 9 S. 1080 P is fine, but all issues with HDR, whatever setting I try.

So my portable computer has a Geforce GTX 4 K card, and thought gave it a try there. Now let's say that the image is out of this world (on Fengmi C2).
But is it really displaying in 4K, 10 bits, using HDR?  The output of the computer is set to 1080 P, but if my memory serves me well, J River will out put the right resolution of the file. I use Red October And Madvr.  So as the projector not shows me what is the input, can I see that in J River?

I did NOT select the automatic frequency though, as the Projector accepts only 60 hz.

If using madvr ... press ctr+j to bring playback stats while movie is playing

More details also might be useful ... which Geforce? ... which projector?

Nobody? It happens that some even compatible equipment in 4K turns out to put out 1080 P.  So I just want to make sure...

Ok ... MC is outputting at 1080p ... so there is downscaling going on

It also outputs at 23fps ... so apparently your projector supports it.

HDR tone mapping is done by MadVR (see https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,126153.0.html for explanation on that)

Also ... your GPU is not up to task with your current settings ... rendering times are higher than vsync ... so you will have ocassional frame drops ... aka choppy playback ... need to reduce some settings to get rendering times under vsync

Thanks 4 K is a mess. On nothing can get it well. The projector has it so perfect on 1080 P. It looks best I have ever seen.

But 4K or should I say HDR is grey contrast is poor. Now the projector has its own player. There again 1080 P is smashing and 4 K has same problem as on anything. On projector no setting can be wrong, as by playing on harddisc, there are no settings to be done, as the projector should play it well.  I think this last is defective. Seems it not recognize the HDR. And it should. Here example of 1080 P, nice contrast with this time Google tv on 1080  P and second on 4K HDR. All set well.

Ok ... if hdr stuff looks washed out ... then i might be wrong about madvr tone mapping (EDIT: looking at your screen shots ... definitely MadVR is not doing tone mapping ... nothing is doing tone mapping, so image looks wash out)

It would really help if you tell me your GPU and projector model.

Also ... can you post screenshots of your settings:

1. MC setting ... Tools > Options > Video > Display Settings

2. MadVR settings ... Devices -> [projector name]->Display modes

3. MadVR settings ... Devices -> [projector name]->HDR

EDIT2: MC/madVR settings are more complicated than other players (kodi, plex) cause they give you direct control over playback. But it gives much better results ... especially for HDR on projectors which have limited brightness compared to TV

With Computer I am really not good in it any more. I can also show you what Zidoo put out.

But model is MSI GF 63 Thin 95 C.  In Mad VR, I do nothing. I just play the file. I give you other settings this week-end, as I rest now getting vaccine Thursday.

The projector is a  Fengmi Cine 2, brand new.  1080 p has a killer contrast. Never seen before. Now I was wondering. The projector is 4K. But can the projector handle HDR, when you input it? Can that be broken, that it not react to it. Or is all that done by either computer, or mediaplayer, here Zidoo Z9S.

I would say that if the projector output so well 1080 P, that there the hardware is functioning well, or must the projector balance in REC 2020 itself, and does not do it? I am 62, and these things are getting difficult for me. What is important in this stage also, is to know if the projector can be defective....

I appreciate your help.  What is weird is when I try to put the Computer in HDR, in the display settings, it is not possible.  It is very complicated all to me. I not really want to use the computer for this, but be sure there is no problem with the ne projector itself. Review here:

ok ... your PC (MSI GF 63) has GeForce 1650. That should be plenty for 4K. Unfortunately, there are not much info on your projector ... other than it is HD but can do 4K by flashing HD 4 times (never heard of something like that ... most i heard are TI chip that need to flash twice to get 4K).

Since it seems you are not so good with computers, I try to be as detail as possible

1) first need to figure what refresh rates your projector support at 4K. Go to NVidia Control Panel (see first attached picture).

Set output color to RGB and Dynamic Range to Full. Select 3840x2180 and see what refresh rate your projector support (you can see my TV support 60, 59, 50, 30, 29, 25, 24, 23)

2) now go to MC. [Tools]->[Options]->[Video]. Set [Display Settings automatic change mode] to off (we will let MadVR switch mode ... as I recall recently somebody had problem with MC switching)

3) In [Tools]->[Options]->[Video] click [open MadVR settings]. In MadVR settings go to [devices]->[display modes]

Copy all settings from my screenshot ... except [list all display modes MadVR may switch to] ... here you have to take refresh rate you found in Step 1 and put it behind 2160p

For example, if you found in Step 1 that 3840x2180 can only support 30Hz and 60Hz, you put "2160p30, 2160p60"

4) In MadVR settings go to [devices]->[HDR]

Copy all settings from my screenshot ... except [target nits]. Setting this value higher increase "HDR effect" ... setting this value lower makes picture look brighter. Start with 100 ... change it until you find best value for your projector.

Once you happy ... post ctrl+j screenshot so we can check if your PC can handle these settings

Forgot ... in madvr settings

[devices]->[properties] ... set [the display expect following RGB output levels] to full PC 0-255

This will match NVidia setting full dynamic range ... otherwise you will get elevated blacks

Just small update and thanks for your help.

On my computer the Nvidia panel is disabled, and forced to use the windows settings.  In the windows image configuration it is impossible to activate the HDR.   What I read is that the Fengmi C2, needs a source that does the tone-mapping.

But I am not sure, after reading that MadVR output also SDR, that the projector is recognized as such. I am very busy moving, and I will investigate on a HDR TV, if same problem.

Read this to understand HDR and tone mapping

Finally had some time. Now I tried your settings . But.... I go from computer to Denon amplifier, and from there to the Fengmi projector. If I understand, it downscale still. No 10 bits, no HDR (it does that with my Zidoo player though)

Then I put the computer directly on the projector and started configuration of Mad VR from scratch. It seems fine with that.  A bit difficult to configure the nits, but most looks good, but some I still have to alter. Problem is of course I can have sound sometimes, it can vanish though after a while. And it is not DTS MA and so. It can go to the ARC hdmi to the Denon amplifier, but you loose your HD sound. And no real Surround mode.

Put PQ is mostly a great improvement and HDR can finally be used. Screens, 1 st one through Denon, 2 others directly on projector. Pitty I cannot go through the Denon first, not understand why results are different.

On another forum, they told me that MadVr is not doing anything again, weird. My video card is not good enough.
