JRiver MC 27 and Ubuntu :(
« on: August 06, 2021, 06:48:39 pm »

I have a computer running Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.  I have a USB DAC (Musician Pegasus) plugged into one of the USB ports.  I have JRiver MC 27 installed with various music file formats in the library (FLAC, ALAC, DSD).  It was working where when I played a file I would hear music.

Something has changed and now it does not work.  Although, the DAC switches indication to display which sample rate is is receiving correctly, but I hear no sound.  If I play a DSD file I do hear sound.

I have connected this DAC to a Windows machine via USB running JRiver MC and it works fine, so the DAC is good.

I have the audio device in JRiver MC set to " hw: CARD=Audio,DEV0 [ALSA] USB HiRes Audio, USB Audio, Direct hardware device without any conversions "

None of the boxes in "DSP Studio" are checked.

Previously it was working when I had the default sound options in Ubuntu set to " HDMI / DisplayPort 2 - Raven/Raven2/Fenghuang HDMI/DP Audio Controller ", but this does not work anymore, in fact when I run the audio test in Ubuntu's settings the sound always plays through my USB DAC no matter which setting I choose.  It is as if the operating system has taken over the USB DAC and will not allow JRiver to use it.

I have attached photos of the settings that I hope help.

Thank You,

Do any of the other inputs work? Like give front: a try and see what happens. In fact, give Pulse a try and see if that works. Try all of them that's available for your DAC one-by-one and see if any of them generates sound.

If I use Pulse then it will produce sound but it is down sampled, because it is going through the Pulse Audio Server.  None of the other outputs will produce sound unless playing a DSD file.

Like I mentioned, previously if I had the Ubuntu system sounds set to the HDMI output then when I ran the "TEST" in the Ubuntu system sounds window, where you choose Left & Right it would play sound out of the HDMI Display speakers as you would expect.  But now when I do that same test it plays the test sounds through my USB DAC.

I think is part of the problem, but I don't know how to correct this problem.

I was mistaken, even using Pulse it doesn’t work.

Only DSD will play from JRiver.

There has to be an issue with the Ubuntu sound, but I don’t know how to fix it.

It's almost certainly something pulse/Ubuntu sound related.  Try running pavucontrol (or installing it if it isn't already installed).  It gives you a better view than the system sound options of what pulse is doing and which devices are doing what.

Thank You, When I try that it shows 3 devices, the HDMI audio, the audio chip on the motherboard, and the USB DAC.  This is correct.  I tried various combinations of turning them 'off' and having other devices 'on'.  I even tried turning all of them off, but none of the combinations will produce PCM audio from JRiver MC to the USB DAC.

What happens if you set the HDMI audio as the "fallback device" and then open up the system control panel and try and test the audio?  Does it still come out of the DAC or does it come out of the HDMI output?

Also, try looking at the "playback" tab in pavucontrol when you play something in JRiver.  If you set JRiver to the "pulse" output, you should see it show up as a steam in the playback tab and you might be able to get a sense of what's going wrong.
