Dirac VST2 Plugin - Filter Not Engaged On Startup of JRiver
« on: August 12, 2021, 07:51:45 am »

Dirac plugin allows you to select between different filters.

Sometimes, on initial startup of JRiver Media Center (v28) the selected filter indicates that it is On, but it is not engaged.

This misconfiguration is easily identified (usually - depending on music I am listening to) because volume is louder and bass is very bloated compared to when Dirac filter is active.
Dirac appears to be processing signal (meters are active), but as I mentioned, the filter is not engaged.

Only way I've found to engage the filter is to select a completely different filter and then switch back to the filter I would like to use.

After a filter becomes properly activated it remains activated. It never deactivates once it is working properly.

This issue only occurs on initial startup of JRiver.

I sent the same information to Dirac support and Here is Dirac's take on the issue:

"That sounds like an issue where JRiver is offloading the plugin or not activating it directly, meaning you'll have to interact with it to get it running again. In that case, you might contact JRiver support about it."

I have DiracLiveProcessor and when I enabled it, shut down MC, and relaunch it plays activated correctly.

So I'm not sure.  Is it another Dirac, or DiracLiveProcessor?

Anything I need to do to make it not engage when launching?

Thanks.

I use the latest version of the VST2 processor and the Dirac live application.

I have multiple filters, but consistently use one of the filters.
I start JRiver from the default shortcut and I can't think of anything I do differently when this happens.

I have not sat down and thoroughly tested this to get an idea of frequency of occurrence, but it does not occur on every startup (sorry I can't be more precise).
Once the issue is resolved (by selecting a new filter/reselecting original), it doesn't occur again until another fresh startup of JRiver.

But... when the issue does occur, I am certain it is only with initial startup.  Once it's "fixed" it remains properly set.
I do that filter switch and hear the volume drop and bass corrected due to the filter properly engaging.  Depending on music, this volume/bass change can be very subtle, so sometimes it takes a while before I realize the filter is not working properly.  Other times, I recognize it immediately.

Just mentioning again, in case you missed in OP.... The VST2 plugin's meter works properly, even when I notice the filter not processing properly. The filter looks like it should be doing something ...

I know the VST2 and VST3 are basically the same, but would it help with troubleshooting if I switch to Dirac's VST3 plugin?

This is more of an annoyance than critical issue, but it would be nice to figure out what is going on with my system.

Thanks

I switched to the VST3 version and so far have not been able to replicate.  Before I switched over, I was able to replicate with the VST2.
Also, before I switched to the VST3 version I regularly encountered the "incomplete shutdown dialog" error.  I have yet to see that with the VST3 plugin installed.
I will keep testing.

However....now a new issue with the display for the VST3

When the UI for the VST3 is first displayed, the scaling (or something)  is way off and the window is only partially displayed.

To correct this, I switch to any of the other DSP choices i.e. parametric equalizer , and then back to DiracProcessor and the display is corrected.

Hopefully all this helps track down what I am seeing.

And hopefully, the UI display issue I see is not one more thing that seems unique to my JRiver installation :)

I have since realized that the UI can also be corrected by closing/reopening the DSP studio dialog box.  First time in, it is always displays incorrectly.
2nd time in it always displays correctly.

One more piece of information is that this is a 4k display.
Thanks

Bump.... Any chance that someone at JRiver can take a look at the UI issue?  I've tried various UI settings within JRiver.
The UI will only display correctly upon entering the VST3's UI for the 2nd time.

1st time viewing always displays a partial UI.

I can't reproduce that.  I size DSP Studio really small.  Then I close the program and open again.  Then I open DSP Studio and click on the VST 2 or 3 plugin and the size snaps to the right size.

Ok.  Thanks for taking a look.

Was this on 4k display?

Not sure if I ever tried sizing to very small window size.  I only tried different resolutions and font sizes.

To me, the really odd thing is that it only happens on the first viewing after restarting JRiver and subsequent views always display perfectly.

I did change from using Dirac's VST2 to VST3 version, and the 2 versions share their data.
Could there be something slightly different between how the two versions share/store the data, and this somehow interferes with the initial display size.

I'll do some more testing ....

Thanks again.

A bit more testing....

Issue seems related to windows scaling of the UI i.e. display resolution has no impact

When scale and layout is configured to 100% (Windows settings) for my 4k display Dirac VST3 displays properly
If scaling is increased over 100%, Dirac displays smaller and smaller portions of its UI
My display's recommended setting is 300% and it is not really useable at 100%.

@Matt - Any chance your screen configured to 100% Scale and layout?

Anything that causes the DSP screen to redraw (even selecting "Always on Top), and the DSP displays as expected.

This is the only DSP where I this occurring

Very strange

I set scale to 150% instead of 100% but still couldn't reproduce.  DiracLiveProcessor is still the right size.

What I found was that VST effects don't honor the system scale.

So I'm going to try telling the system as much in the next build.

After that change, Windows itself does the scaling.

Please let me know how it works for you all.  Thanks.

BTW - Regarding the original subject of this thread : "Dirac VST2 Plugin - Filter Not Engaged On Startup of JRiver" ....

Since I switched to the VST3 plugin,  the filter is always properly engaged.

Thanks very much!
