Set MC's volume to "Internal".  If that doesn't work, you can tell MC to convert to PCM.

To play as DSD, DSD has to be sent to the DAC exactly as it is. MC cannot modify the stream to change its volume or you will destroy the DSD stream. That is why it has to be bitstreamed. You have to control the volume after it is converted to analog, either in the DAC or in preamp/amp.

To hear DSD, you just bitstream the data and adjust the volume with your DAC or preamp/amp.  You cannot adjust it with MC.  The MC volume should be set to 100% when playing DSD.

If you adjust the volume on your amp/preamp to zero, there should be no sound. If there is that is a function of the amp/preamp, not of MC.  What are you using for volume control?

You need a volume control on your DAC or you amp/preamp.  What is your DAC? What is your amp/preamp?  If your are doing volume control on your ASUS PC, then you are not doing native DSD, unless your Asus PC has a DSD Dac in it. Please describe your setup.

The volume control on the Asus should control the volume. Do you have the VR Bypass set to off?  Headphones or line out to amp?

According to the manual, it is a switch on the back of the Asus that bypasses volume control.

If you are getting sound with the volume control all the way off, I would contact Asus or your dealer for some help.

here is the asus answer...
"If there is no problem with audio playback with other programs, it is likely that the unit is not at fault. Application compatibility is always the responsibility of the application developer so I think there may be a problem with JRiver."

That is the usual pointing to the other guy. You may have some setup problem with MC, but honestly, if a volume control set to 0 allows a loud sound, then the DAC, the amp in the DAC or the volume control is poorly designed or malfunctioning.

Are you using the Asus ASIO driver and is the bit perfect light on your DAC on? Are you set up to use DoP with your ASIO driver? You might also want to try using WASAPI instead of ASIO.

In Audio Device setup where you specify the ASIO output device, the Device Settings section should have a check box for DoP. You can check that.

As I think your DAC uses DoP, so changing the Audio Device to WASAPI should play DoP without using the ASIO driver. WASAPI only uses DoP for DSD, whereas ASIO can use DoP or native DSD sample rates.
