Native bitrate overridden, how to fix?
« on: December 04, 2021, 10:12:48 pm »

Searched the forums for a while and didn't readily find a thread addressing this.

Running a 13" MacBook Pro mid-2012 with Catalina 10.15.7 and the Intel I5 dual-core 2.5 MHz processor, 8 GB RAM.

I'm outputting stereo audio via USB to a McIntosh C50 DAC that automatically detects the native file bitrate and frequency.  It handles from 16 bit 44.1 kHz up to 32 bit 192 kHz.

MC 27.0.89 (Intel) shows whatever the native file depth is the the audio path window (e.g. 24 / 88.2), but the output is always shown at 32 bit at the native frequency (e.g. 32 / 88.2).  The display on C50 DAC confirms this. Checked the Mac Audio MIDI for the C50 device and it shows 32 / 192 while the internal speakers are 24 / 96.

Some more experienced users over at AudiogoN tell me that MC is supposed to entirely bypass the MIDI; could that be incorrect?  How do I get MC to automatically control both the bit rate and frequency to the native values?

This is how it's supposed to be, all Media Center is doing is padding the output bit-depth with 0s to the max your DAC supports. so 16-bit or 24-bit is padded to 32-bit, but it's not actually doing any dithering or anything like that. It's done that way to make things easier but ultimately it doesn't matter, even with the padded bit-depth it's still a bit-perfect output (if no DSP is being used).

Thank you; now I understand how it works.  That's not an ideal solution for my needs, so I guess I'll just have to spin discs when appropriate.  I was really hoping to have a single box solution.
