Profile avatar via URL
« on: January 28, 2022, 12:26:22 pm »

I have been trying to change my profile avatar to one linked from a URL but it fails every time, telling me it's either too large or not an avatar. What are the criteria for an avatar? I tried to link to a 19KB .gif file either on iCloud or on my NAS to no avail.
many thanks for any clues

I think max resolution is 100x100, or perhaps 128x128

Got it, thank you
EDIT: tried a .gif with an image size of 99x51 and still no joy.

<---- The GIF is fine  8)

EDIT: I returned to my own avatar. I had changed to your GIF as my avatar, as you can see on the attachment below.

Can you paste the URL you're using? It's possible that iCloud is blocking external referrals (direct links), and perhaps you're not setting up your NAS home server correctly. Also, the forum likely only accepts HTTPS links, not HTTP.

Thank you so much for your help. I'll give it another go
EDIT: I'm just not able to get it to work. I can access the shared gif on icloud or the NAS from Safari using the shared link (from outside my LAN) but no joy here. I'll let this one go. Not important anyway.

I'd recommend using a site like Imgur and create an account there then upload your image and use the direct link as the avatar link. That's what I do and it works fine.

You can always pull an Ouroboros and point to that attachment up there. Right-click on the image to get the address and use that as your avatar URL:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=131872.0;attach=39361;image

To change the avatar just attach some new pic to an existing/new post and then get the new URL.

Ah, of course, thank you. I should have thought of that.

Thank you, that is a nifty solution. Don't want to get in trouble with management, though. I'll try imgur, as AD suggested.
EDIT: So now, I'm thinking something's up. I tried this https://imgur.com/a/fxcXEsZ and got the same error. I can get to this image on safari on many thanks, iphone on LTE without any problem.

That URL points to a page on imgur that contains your image. The URL needs to point to the image directly - when you try the URL in Safari, it must only open the image itself, nothing else around it.

The actual direct link to your picture on imgur is this, try it:

I gave you a working link, you're trying something else. Just use the exact text I pasted.
The JPG on your second link is 285x127. Too large. I think the max is actually 100x100... perhaps you should keep just the stork or the vulture, not both :)

Thank you so much for your patience. I got too many versions on imgur so I deleted them all and started over. Hence the new link but now I got one that works.
Thanks again

It's a hieroglyph and represents the ancient Egyptian name for the god of writing, magic, wisdom, and the moon, Thoth (Djehuty). My wife and I went to Egypt over Christmas with 10 friends (some of them academic Middle East historians) and it was  v e r y  impressive. From everything I learned, Thoth turned out to be my favorite.

Perhaps a simpler pictogram would be more readable?
