JRiver Not Playing Back Correctly [Solved]
« on: February 16, 2022, 11:30:54 pm »

Edit:
Plays at about a 90 out of 100.
Playback speed is slower than normal by about 10 % or so.
This only happens on JRiver.
When JRiver is installed, it affects Foobar, SMSL and VLC.
The second it is uninstalled, the others start working correctly.
Have Unstalled/wiped and reinstalled at least 3 times today.

90 out of 100 ?

Please describe your setup.  There was a report of a Bluetooth problem.

If you mean Volume Level is 90%, then you are probably using System Volume in MC and you probably have your volume slider in MC moved to about the 90% position.

This is my best guess based upon the extremely limited information you have provided.

Hi Jim,
My set up:
Macbook Pro 2019 i7 - OS = Monterey - 12.2.1
Objects in play other wise = Shure Aonic 50 headphones, Sony WM1004 Headphones, SMSL DAC.
Video out through usb-c HDMI adapter.

Yes, I saw that thread and I already moved all outputs to 48 hz, no change.
I did a vram reset and an smc reset, no joy.

As I said, When JRiver is not installed, VLC and foobar work fine.
When it is installed, and sorry about the bad description earlier, it's like the audio is being slowed down by 10%.
It is, to me very noticeable, yet over the built in speaker, playback is fine.
When I uninstall JRiver, playback is ok through wither app.
Very strange.
Any help would be appreciated.
-----------------------------------
blgentry,
Thank you, I appreciate that, I phrased that really badly.
Playback speed is slow by about 10 %
Volume level was not an issue that I noticed.

Are you using Media Server mode in Media Center?
What audio device and audio device settings are you using in MC?

I have no idea what media server mode is, so if it isn't a default, I am not using it.

Tools/Options/Audio/Defaults/ All devices are shown when connected.
Any device selection other than the on-board speakers results in the anomaly.
Hopefully that pic attached.
All settings are the same on all the devices.

Can't see why having MC installed would do anything unless it's in media server mode. If is was in media server mode, you'd see a MC logo in the upper right area of the top menu bar where the volume, bluetooth, clock icons are showing.

Well I just ran through another cycle same result.
With J installed any move off of internal speakers borks the whole system.
And it added a new wrinkle. When trying to go to the Sony's it did this.:

Once again, when it was uninstalled, everything went back to normal and switching between items was no issue.

When you say "installed" do you really mean "running"?

If MC isn't running, it's hard to see how it could make any difference whether or not it exists on the Disk in the Applications Folder.

I can install and check but unless i had something wrong, it had to be uninstalled.. will update.

Update.
Even with it completely shut down, the other programs are not running correctly.
UnInstalled, worked perfect. No idea what's wrong, but for me, on bluetooth, this does not work.

I can't see how that can be if MC's not running. It doesn't install any drivers, etc.
Maybe check your audio midi settings to see if they are changed by MC running and not changed by your other apps to what they want when they are running?
I'm kind of out of other ideas.

It sounds like somehow MC is setting the sample rate to 44.1kHz and the system is expecting it to be at 48kHz.  That would explain the slow playback.  I have the opposite happen frequently:

If I play something from another app that is set at 48khz, if I just hit "play" on MC with a 44.1 file, MC plays back too fast.  Everything is high pitched and faster than it should be.  Pressing STOP on MC and then play, allows MC to set the sample rate correctly and then play back as it should.

But you are describing the opposite:  Other programs play back too slowly, not MC.  Does MC play back at the correct speed?  If MC is playing back slowly, then I'm not sure where to go.  Perhaps check Audio MIDI settings on your playback device DURING playback.

Bluetooth is weird with MC because, as far as I know, you can't make MC talk directly to a BT device.  Instead you use Core Audio "default audio", and then select using the Mac's audio switcher (the Sound preferences).  The "correct" way to use MC is to set the audio device explicitly in MC's audio setup.

Do you have any devices other than the built in speaker that are NOT Bluetooth?  If you have a DAC with a wired output to speakers, an amp, wired headphones, etc, it would be good to try that too to see if my theory has any merit.

I wish I had better advice instead of just speculation.

Good luck.
Brian.

MC Plays back correctly through the onboard speakers, but when anything else is tried, the audio is slowed down regardless of app.
It will take a bit, but the dac has a mini jack that can be fed off of the headphone jack. Will update.
Thanks everyone.

OK, a bad headphone jackl may have been an issue, as when I plugged into the port, the logic board fried itself and the print ID scanner.
It's supposed to be here Monday. Will update when I get to that point in the reinstall. Thanks everyone for ideas, suggestions and help.

Oh man, sorry to hear about your Mac.

Hopefully some combination of the new machine and a fresh installation will fix your unusual issue.

Good luck!

Be careful there, the MacBook Pro has an analog 3.5mm output, what DAC are you referring to that has an analog mini jack input?

Quoting myself from earlier in the thread:

Quote
Perhaps check Audio MIDI settings on your playback device DURING playback.

Also trying changing the playback sample rate on your active device during playback.

JRiver is the active device.

VLC, Foobar, native Apple music play nice and right in all modes: SMSL, WM1004, Aonic 50, 846TW1.
The only type that plays right is built in speakers. None of them play right with JRiver. and it takes an uninstall, reboot to reset the system.
I am glad it works for who it does.
I'm done, unless there are other ideas.

I'm still completely confused by the notion that the DAC has a 3.mm input, and you are feeding that with the 3.5mm analog output of a headphone jack. Makes no sense to me at all.

Does the SMSL have a USB input and if so what happens when you try to use that kind of connection?

Here's the DAC:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N8Q57FS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Usb is 2.0 working on that aspect now but I fail to see how a usb connection will alter the way it behaves, rather than the way the signal is delivered.
Will update.

JRiver is the active device.

I probably should have been more explicit:  Open Audio MIDI setup.  Find your audio output.  Examine the sample rate it's using.  Trying changing it.  See if that changes what you hear.

MIDI link is locked out in jriver. Was able to access through Mac.
AD18 in bluetooth is not changable, locked in at 96000 2ch 32bit float
AD18 usb fine via USB which is nice, But problem remains with Bluetooth headphones.
Sure, not having to flip modes everytime would be nice but this isnt even worth that.
Here's what I see:
