Audio Path showing 5.1 instead of 2.1
« on: March 15, 2022, 06:50:57 am »

My laptop HP Envy Leapmotion SE 17-J102tx has integrated Beats audio quad stereo speakers with 2 subwoofers( i/e 4 speakers in stereo configuration and 2 subwoofers). Below are the settings i have used. But the output audio path shows 5.1 instead of selected 2.1. Am i missing something in the settings ?

We use a 5.1 container because that's a standard.

If i interpret your reply correctly , is it  a short coming of MC which has only taken into consideration the popular formats ? Why are then options even available for 2.1(something which doesn't work). BTW stereo selection(2.0 works) but that is not what i want in my case. :(

We put 2.1 in a 5.1 container.  It works.

The extra channels will contain silence.  This is done because three channel output is not widely understood by devices, and six channel output is.

Ok ,if it is so and for the present cannot be otherwise, then I'll have to cope up  with its aesthetic aspect as long as it is  working practically (i.e.2.1 in a 5.1 container which can be seen in the analyzer output)  .

We'll try this next build:
Changed: When outputting 2.1, Audio Path will report that instead of the container format 5.1.

Thanks for the prod :)

You know, I have always wondered this myself.  I have only ever used the 2.1 output and never understood why "Audio Path" would always show 5.1.

If I'd known that all it took was to request this be fixed, I would have done that 10 years ago!  ;D   Consider me another user that is very happy you are making this minor, yet clarifying change.

Perhaps it would be good to report both, with the container format only reported if different than the actual channels.  Then there is no chance for confusion on either one.
