OT: Programmer on the run
« on: February 24, 2003, 08:59:20 am »

Yesterday morning, JimH taped a note to my forehead and dropped my off at the local airport. I donīt know where he sent me (the noteīs on my forehead), but I ended up in Buenos Aires this morning. (Ok, it didnīt really happen this way). Buenos Aires is beatiful, though I havenīt seen much of it yet (a couple of hours sleep after the all night trip).

She's a cutie. She sings, too?

Speaking of cuties and singing, it was gratifying to see Norah Jones get the credit she deserves from the Grammys. "Come Away With Me" is a marvelous album from start to finish ... not a bad cut on it. Quite different from what we usually see from the Industry.

A rarely discussed tidbit:
Norah is the daughter of Ravi Shankar.

Ravi apparently has another daughter: Here's Norah and (I assume) her sister. The guy must be close to 70.

King...

Did the show have anything to do with the Ross ice shelf? Nat Geo had an article (Dec '01) on a superberg (B-15) that measured 25 x 180 MILES! Consider also that the plateau of the berg was 205 feet above sea level which means there was 3000 feet of ice below sea level supporting it (remember the laws of buoyancy?). That's a whole lotta ice.

10-27

PS: Gate...how's the weather down there right now?

That's like 69,000,000,000 cubic feet of ice! Whoa, think of all the beer you could keep cold with that.  ;)

Mach...

Try like 0.606 mi * 25 mi * 180 mi = 2727 mi3 which equals 401,408,815,104,000 feet3 or 400 Trillion Cubic Feet of solid H2O! That's a few coolers worth...to say the least. Isn't nature grand?

10-27

edit: Ice weighs in at 56 lbs/ft3. That baby weighed 11 Trillion tons!

The weather in Buenos Aires was 85ish, I was sweating (but I am too accustomed to Minnesota weather). I am in Ushuaia now, and it is about 50 or 60 degrees. Lovely in both places. Where the penguinĒĨs are now (600 or 700 miles south of here), the lows are around freezing (warmer than Minneapolis).

Last night I went into a grocery store, grabbed the most expensive bottle of white wine they had, grabbed a 1.5liter bottle of water, gave the cashier 3 dollars, and got change back. No the bottle was not a screwtop nor a box-of-wine (tm), and it was very good.

See yall

I think John left today from Tierra del Fuego.  I checked the weather and couldn't quite make it out, but it looked like he will have temperatures around freezing and a lot of rain mixed with snow for the passage south to Antarctica.  It looks like around a day and a half or two on the open ocean.

The Southern Ocean, where he is, is known as the most difficult (terrifying) part of the round the world sailing races.  The wind and the waves build and build around the pole, so the wave heights often reach above fifty feet.

I told him if he could get to the rail on the leeward side and puke overboard, he would feel a lot better.

I was thinking, maybe Jimh Sent Him to Antarctica for a reason.

I am letting my mind wonder about the reasons.

1. Jim Don't like Gateley
2. Jim got frost bite when he was a kid and wants everyone to know what it feels like.
3. etc...

Hi Y'all,

60+ rolls of 36 exposure film, which means at least 2 or 3 pictures will come out.

I'll post a link to some when I get them developed. The trip was amazing, including 10 meter waves, whales, half a million penguins, leopard seals, elephant seals, fur seals (they actually are OVER populated now), weddell seals and beautiful landscapes. I was pecked by penguins, snuffled by an elephant seal, examined by  whales, and chased by playful fur seals.
