We used the trail period for MC28 for Mac to rip a couple of dozen CDs, but ended up considering Synology NAS instead.

Given the price of storage these days, the Synology idea didn't make sense, so we're back...but, this time we'll be taking advantage of the special March offer to purchase MC29 for Mac.

Before we decide to pull the trigger, though, I'd like to know the best way to approach the changeover?  In other words, we want to keep the settings we chose in MC28 and, naturally, we want to keep our audio files where MC29 can find them.

By the way, I couldn't find this particular scenario in the Mac MC29 for Mac setup instructions.

Back up in MC28.  Restore the backup in MC29.

Can you do that via an expired version of MC28 for Mac?

The latest versions of MC28 will also work with a MC29 license, so if you update to that you can run it with a new license, export, and then swap to MC29.

I want to make sure that I understand this clearly.  You're saying that we should buy an MC29 master license, back up our MC28 for Mac trial version settings and then download MC29.  Is that correct?

UPDATE: I tried the setup scenario described above and, after I used the RESTORE LICENSE function to enter the registration code we received, via email, I had the following dialog box pop up...

"You are using Media Center 28 Mac to install a license from a different version...Please download and install the version that matches your license, and then try again."

No doubt, I could've misunderstood something along the way, but we don't wish to lose the files and/or the settings we made in the trial version of MC28 for Mac, so, unfortunately, we'll need some further guidance.

You have to make sure you're using the latest MC28 for Mac build, or else the MC29 license won't work for it.

Thank you for the reply, AD.  The trial version of MC28 for Mac, that we have installed on one our Mac MBPs, has expired and, therefore, will not start at all.  With this in mind, how does one go about obtaining "...the latest MC28 for Mac build..."?

That should work fine if you choose to restore settings when you restore. There is no difference between running the trialware and a licensed version of MC28 in this regard.

I followed the upgrade instructions in this thread.  Unfortunately the version we were told to download is causing issues.

We can no longer access certain CD music rips stored in our library and, much more importantly, MC has to be started repeatedly to accomplish CD music rips. 

In other words, the version we were told to download is causing freezing issues.

The only difference between now and the trial period is that the host machine now has a newer Mac operating system installed.

I used the link included in Post #7 of this thread to accomplish our goal of saving our library and settings before downloading MC29.

In other words, I used the hyperlink in good faith, employed the license number we received and backed up the library we created during the trial period.  As Bob seems to have explained very clearly, the license number doesn't have an effect on which version one uses -- be it MC28 or MC29 -- so the question is why is the MC28 build we were linked to not operating like the older trial version we predicated our decision on?

I thought you wanted it so that you could salvage your MC28 library in order to use it in MC29?  Correct?

If that's the case, just install MC29 and restore the MC28 library backup, including settings.

MC 28.0.106 shouldn't have any regressions from previous builds of MC28 with regards to functionality.

I just tested with a 10.12 disc on my test machine and 28.0.106 works fine.
If you have some files that are out of the ordinary (not wav, aif, mp3, mp4, flac) MC may have to download a helper and it needs an internet connection to do that otherwise I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to access your media files.

Before I continue trying to explain our situation, it's important to note that we predicated our decision to purchase a license based on our experience with the [older] trial version of the JRiver software. 

Based on what I was advised -- on this forum thread -- I used the link provided by JRiver admin to install a newer version of the Media Center 28 software.  After paying for a license (on April 1, 2022), I started said newer version of the software and, once again, as advised, backed up the library we created while using the [stable] trial version of the software.  After performing the backup, we tested the newer version of the software to see how it performed.  Unfortunately, the newer version of the software is very unstable and, based on this performance, we are again respectfully requesting a full refund of our license fee.

I honestly believe that I've done everything I can to explain why we're not happy with the software we were instructed to download.  It doesn't function nearly as well as the trial version of the software we predicated our decision to purchase on, so, needless to say, we're not happy with the newer software.

Because it's likely that if you install MC29 and restore your MC28 library it will work right.
