Why doesn't Media Center dismount the install volume after an install or upgrade is complete? I  recently noticed that I had several MC volumes mounted all the way back to MC 28. I used the Disk Utility app to unmount them. Why does MC leave the install volume mounted?

No apps (Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird, Media Center, etc.) automatically unmount the .dmg once you copy the app to the Applications folder, it's always been a manual process to unmount it after install - that's just how macOS works in this regard. As far as I know there's no way to do it unless they switched it to a type of installer with an installer script like some apps use, but IMO it doesn't really make sense for Media Center as it doesn't use/install any kernel extensions, network extensions, file system drivers (e.g. third-party NTFS drivers), etc.

Indeed this is the normal way that most Mac programs are installed.  The disk image remains mounted until you "eject" it.

Ejecting can be done from Finder.  Just find it in the side bar and press the little arrow that looks sort of like the "open" key on a CD player.  A second or two later, the disk image sound eject and no longer be mounted.

Thanks for the info. Being new to the Mac, it is clear I still have a lot to learn about this new OS

If the mounted .dmg's icon appears on the desktop you can also right click on it and select the option to "eject" it.

You'll get used to it quickly.  The biggest hurdle I find, for myself and for others I know, is overthinking things.  The solution to many common desires is to do it as simply as possible.

I still have to look things up occasionally, but that's no problem.  Learning is good.  Learning is fun.  Learning is life.

I have come across a number of apps that actually indeed do unmount the disk image after upgrades or install.

... and if you set up the Finder to show external hard drives on your desktop, you can drag that icon onto the recycle bin. The symbol then change into an eject symbol and just will do that.

Have fun with the new system!
