Problem with DSD playing
« on: September 29, 2022, 05:45:08 am »

I have just bought a new Mac mini M1 (I already have one) and install the latest MACOS update: 12.6. I installed also JRiver 29.87 and did the following:

- for audio output - nothing changed
- bit streaming set to: DSD

JRiver does not read DSD - I hear only hum on my Pioneer U05 (which can reproduce DSD).
In Audio Midi I set the output to the max (32-384) and still it does not play DSD.

When I was using Windows 10 it was working (with the same settings) just fine.

I am wondering, does the latest version of MAC OS (12.6) allows at all playing DSD ?

MAC OS (12.6) plays fine with streaming DSD. You have to make sure that DOP (DSD over PCM) is enabled. I assume the DAC is not the issue but check the settings of the DAC with respect to DSD.

Does the Pioneer U05 support DSD-over-PCM (DoP)? If not, that's why it doesn't work. On macOS only DoP works with Apple's CoreAudio, native DSD playback won't work. You need to find out if your Pioneer U05 supports DoP, because if it doesn't then DSD bitstreaming won't work on macOS.

You could try contacting Pioneer and asking them about it.

Thank you for the comments. I replaced Pioneer with another DAC (Arcam irDac II) and everything is working just fine.

It seems that some DACs have a problem with Mac mini and latest OS. I saw in internet that, for example, Hegel DACs are also not working well with latest  MacOs.

Obviously that is not JRiver issue.
