Selected ASS subtitles not rendered when playing DVDs

I started playback of a DVD from the HDD (the VIDEO_TS folder is found on the HDD) and while the disc is playing I used right click -> Subtitles -> Browse to pick a ass subtitle file.

The subtitle file shows up in the Subtitles menu, however nothing is rendered on top of the video. Was using JRVR as the video renderer.

When I do the same thing in MPC-BE, the subtitle file is rendered just fine.
