Down scaling 24bit FLAC to 16bit ALAC to work with an iPod

Hi folks,
I have some new tunes in 24bit 96kHz +. When I convert to Apple I get huge files that the iPod will play but are seriously slow (like listening to 45rpm at 17rpm). There does not appear to be that many tweaks one can apply when converting/down scaling. What am I missing?
