Sticky Views... (9.0.121)
« on: February 26, 2003, 01:18:03 pm »

Let us know how the "sticky" view logic in 9.0.121 works for you.

Once you change something, everything below it will use the same settings.  You can then further customize underneath if you like.

It only remembers view settings down to a certain level, so you hopefully won't have the "but I just changed that" blues that Explorer induces. (example: each view scheme can have its own settings, but not each individual album inside the view scheme)

View information is stored here if you need to reset it (for testing):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\View Info

Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks for this feature matt!!

Sticky view schemes are a great way to make it really easy to set for everything.

I've started playing with this and I have to say - You've done an incredible job with it - well worth missing a day's build release for :)

VERY nice job on re-doing the options screen too.

Quick Question:
Is there any way to do an explorer type function of: 'Make all views like this one' or 'make all child folders have this view (when selecting a specific folder) - If not this would be a GREAT benefit.

Nila,
On Matt's behalf, "Thanks".

We may change it, but for now, if you set a view for an item in the tree, it will set all items at the same level the same way.

If you set a root level item, like "audio" or "images", the settings will be applied to all children, until you set them differently.

We decided not to emulate Windows Explorer.

Hey :)

I didn't mean so it copies Explorer's way of doing it because I dont think even the devil himself knows what this is. It seems to just randomly do whatever it wants, whenever it wants :)

I just mean in explorer if you go to options, View you can do:  'Apply to all folders'
which will apply the current view scheme to all folders 'resetting' them all and over writing any other settings chose.

Possibly just a button in the options screen saying: 'Reset all View Settings' or something?

The more I play the more I love how you've done it.
Really a fantastic addition to MJ to give it a LOT of power. This one did a LOT for useability!!

Sticky views seems to work well although I have a few inconsistencies.  In Audio for some reason it is showing a double CD set with disc 2 first.  It is set to sort by Artist.  Now that there are no options to set the sort sort hierachy how can we sort on multiple fields eg first by Artist, then by Album then byt Track number??

NoCode - click on the column headers - it'll re-sort it and MJ remembers your sorting option as part of the view - VERY SWEETLY DONE!! :)

I know I'm probably pushing my luck, but considering how fast you guys implemented this quite big feature and did an amazing job of it, would there be ANY possibility of adding an option to customise the right click menu?
Over time we've seen different requests for different features in different positions in this right click menu as different features are important to different people.
Letting everyone customise it individually would be another HUGE useability improvement in v9 over previous builds.

TopStyle Pro v3 (and I think v2) allows this and it REALLY helps to customise it to work best for how you use it.

Obviously it couldn't be fully customised with all the trees being customised but the ability to bring things like: Rating, Send to/CD Burner, etc, etc to the main menu are all things I'm sure you'd have people bowing before you as gods for the ability to do.

Anything I customize for columns (position, size, enabled/disabled) is not remembered now...so, it basically does not work (sorry to report).

Jim,

Spent 30 frustrating minutes already...it just doesn't remember column customization (sizes, order and enable/disabled)...have you tried these features?  do they work for you?

I've spent a few minutes with it, but yes it does.  There may be lots of things that don't.

Try turning things off.

I usually have most things turned off...everything on the Tree & View Settings dialog is turned off.  I really can't think of anything else to turn off...maybe, something is required to be turned on.  Have you tried customizing a column name (like changing Duration to Time) and does column settings/customizations still save ok?

How do I get all of my Audio files to sort by Artist - Year - Album - Track # - Name, now? I had that set up before, but now that option is gone.

I've tried setting it for my Audio View Scheme Group, no dice. I tried setting it for the Albums View Scheme, no dice. I tried sorting an individual Album, and it worked, but only for that Album.

How do I do this for all Audio files?

is there any way, along with the views properties, to change it so that anything that is (unassigned) in a particular view, it doesnt expand, like instead of having a plus sign beside the view, and then expanding to an (unassigned) group, it just doesnt expand at all, because theoretically, if something is unassigned in a child branch of the tree, then the same files that are in the (unassigned) branch, would be in the previous branch. This would be very helpful as to keep unwanted cluttering of branches. That way you wouldnt have a list of 5 albums and then an (unassigned) album branch. or make it an option.

apparently albums being listed by track number is not working either......some how the sticky views is overriding the sorting hierarchy. With the sorting list being removed from the options menu, theres no way to set up the order to sort the library.

I just figured out that you when you edit a view scheme, you can specify sorting criteria.

The columns still aren't sticking but the sort mechanism works perfectly: multiple fields, ascending or descending.

Doof,

Edit your view sheme and using the wizard add sorting criteria like this -
[ARTIST],[YEAR],[ALBUM],[TRACK #],[NAME]

Sorry but it isnt working for me either.
It doesn't stick at all.

No matter how i change the displayed columns and their order as soon as i change the tree item everything is reset to the default columns.

Same behaviour with media library and smartlists.

K...the sort solution works for all the children below but it completely screws up the parent of the view scheme.  I have Artist/Album I set the sort criteris to [ARTIST],[YEAR],[ALBUM],[TRACK #].  All of my albums are now sorted how they use to be but clicking on the main branch it is only displaying about 300 of my files out of about 3000.  If this is the solution then with a little bit of work it could be perfect ;D  The sticky views is a nice bit of work!!  Now if we could just sort the child order in a view scheme in the tree ;D ;D

Hi,

I'm also sorry to report that sticky views schemes does not work for me. I tried to setup differents views for Images and Audio but it only remembers the last settings regardless of the view scheme in which I made it.

It seems to me that information is not written properly to the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\View Info
.

When I delete entries and restart MC9 it only writtes to the registry the first time i change columns and then switch to another folder. Is it supposed to remember each setting in the registry? Maybe then it depends on the operating system (using win2k here).

These are my registry entries:

(1:1)(0:)(194:(1:1)(1:4)(42:(1:0)(6:Artist)(6:Artist)(2:-1)(1:1)(2:-1))(40:(1:0)(5:Album)(5:Album)(2:-1)(1:1)(2:-1))(44:(1:0)(7:Track #)(7:Track #)(2:-1)(1:1)(2:-1))(38:(1:0)(4:Name)(4:Name)(2:-1)(1:1)(2:-1)))(195:(1:1)(2:11)(4:Name)(3:158)(6:Artist)(3:117)(5:Album)(3:119)(5:Genre)(3:130)(8:Duration)(2:63)(7:Bitrate)(2:49)(7:Track #)(2:56)(9:File Type)(2:66)(4:Year)(2:40)(6:Rating)(2:47)(8:Filename)(3:384))(1:0)

This is from a regedit backup I made...

If i delete these and then change the column layouts for
Artist/Album then nothing appears in this registry area...

I don't think sticky views work with Win98SE guys...

Seems to work on XP though   :'(

I love you!!!! At last this request back from the ol' 8.x betas comes true! THANK YOU!

Ok, back from jumping up and down in joy...
- Sticky views doesn't work on Playing Now. Switch from playing now to Media Library and back, the sorting is gone.
- Selecting a file in playing now, go from PLaying now to Media Library, click on Next to play next song, and go back to Playing now, several songs are selected.

Thanks!!!

Yep, seems to be an OS issue.

I just tried 121 under XP(SP1) and views are really sticky !
Does not stick under W2K (SP3)

Hmm, one bug under XP

The properties window isn't remaining sticky!

So if I have it open in the media library it's also open in playing now.
I want it open in the media library most of the time but practically never want it open in the playing now window.

Not sure if it's meant to be sticky or not but could it be pretty please? :)

We will fix the OS issue with the next build.

Playing Now will always sort by sequence -- just makes sense I think.

How do I sort?

MC will remember mulitiple sort levels (it caps it at 6, but we'll adjust that if necessary).

So, if you like Genre, Artist, Album, Track #, Name, just click those columns in reverse order.  It'll remember.

If you have an idea to make this functionality more obvious, please let us know.  The reverse order thing does bend the brain a little -- would it be better to use forward order if the last sort happened within 1 second?

How's that? It would be more consistent if you could set the sorting in Playing Now as well. I usually sort the PN Artist-Album-T#-Name.

Is there any reason excluding PN in the Sticky views? Too hard to code or something like that?

Just wondering :)

I think he means that even if you sort Playing Now by name, it's going to play in the order specified by the Seq column, so why bother have it hold the sorted view? I'll let you two debate that one. :P

That could work. Although, using the wizard to specify the sort order is fine too.

I think there should be options for what types of things you want to be sticky. For instance, while I love that I can have different columns showing for different views, I don't care to have a View Scheme remember that I sorted it a certain way. I may have only wanted to temporarily sort a view by Name to find a particular song, then want it to go back to the more complicated Artist - Year - Album - Track# sort.

And I can see times when I want to add a column to everything, and having to jump in everywhere to do that would be a pain.

So options for what we want sticky would be really nice.

Maybe have the sort criteria specified in the view scheme override any manual sorting?

How about a right click option on column headers with options like "Stick to..." and "Unstick from..." with sub options of "this view only", "this view and all siblings", "this view and all children" & "all views".

I think the best bet for sorting is to use the wizard when you edit the view scheme.  However as I said above this is currently mangling the default view foir the scheme.  The children pick it up and display correctly but the main view is just in a real mess right now...  It is only showing a tenth of my files...

P.S. Is there gonna be any chance of sorting the items in the tree for 9.0 or is that likely gonna be a 9.1 eg have an artist/album view scheme show like this
Pearl Jam
 Ten
 Vs
 Vitalogy
 NoCode (sorted by Year)
as opposed to
 NoCode
 Ten
 Vitalogy
  Vs (sorted alpahbetically as currently)
Its not essential but it would make things look nicer ;D

Seems to be working quite well for me under XP. Thanks so much guys- one of my most requested features is here!

FWIW, I would also like to see the properties dialog sticky.

Questions:
- Were sorting options changes in this release? They seem more accurate.

- Can you make the top-level Media Library view remember my sorting? I like to have it sort by Album Artist, and I seem to have to do this manually every time I start MC.

Thanks again- It's getting pretty darn close to being the perfect audio player and media manager.

Sticky Views:

* When MC minimized to the Task Try (not the Task Bar) & I right mouse click on the MC icon, then select Exit, MC will not re-load minimized to the Task Try.

* I usually load MC with the TV in a window which automatically reduces MC itself minimized to the Task Try.  Upon exiting MC it will not re-load windowed as I last had it.

All other Sticky View items including the Sort List order seem to be working great for me.

Sticky Views isn't meant to start MC minimized if that's how you had it when you exited. That's what the Startup Mode option is for under Startup Options.

Doof;

<< Sticky Views isn't meant to start MC minimized if that's how you had it when you exited. That's what the Startup Mode option is for under Startup Options.  >>.

It is not working that way.

I have (under options) the following turned on & still does not return to where I was when last exited (if minimized to Task Tray)...

Startup Settings...
* Interface/Last Exit mode.
* Startup (Plus Feature)/Start Media Jukebox in/Last Location.

Have tried other settings... it just does not work correctly.

sticky views is a good idea, but its just not sorting correctly, i understand your reverse order idea, Matt, but what about ablums that were normally listed by track number whereas everything else was listed by the sorting order?....thats where I have a problem, because tracks number was not in my sorting order, but i had "track # for albums" checked so that my albums would be sorted by track number.

Matt :
To help us to keep track of the sorting order currently being used, how about possibly something like a balloon tip or something appearing as we hover over a column header saying what the current sorting order is.
Or one appearing as we click a header telling us what it is going to be now.

Another thing that would be REALLY good is to have the status bar at the bottom of MJ where you list the number of songs etc. put something here saying: Sorting. Then when you right click on it, have it pop up a little list with the current sort order appearing in it so we can see what it is. If we could then also drag and drop items in this list up or down the list to modify the sort order and have the list re-sorting itself as we shuffled the items so we could see it's effect dynamically this would be AMAZING.

If your not quite sure what I mean by this feature then open up MS Word, and type a few lines, you'll see a little 'book' in the status bar at the bottom. If you right click on this it gives you a bunch of options.
Replace the book in MJ with the word: Sorting Order and the list that appears with the sort list and add to it the ability to drag the items in the list up and down and you'll have a KILLER feature!!! :)
