Can JRiver use custom shaders? [Yes]
« on: July 03, 2023, 11:56:46 am »

I just bought JRiver, loving it with the new tone mapping improvements but question -

Can I use the filmgrain shader that I have been using with MPV with JRiver?  Also is there a way to do advanced configuration as I do with mpv.conf?  For example if I want to use SSIM downscaling?

At present, no

I believe support for user defined shaders is planned though (not sure on timeframe)

Custom shaders are planned to be supported. All configuration that is available is in the UI. We're not using mpv, so mpv options don't apply. We just use libplacebo - the same rendering library powering the "gpu-next" output in mpv.

Thanks.

Yeah MPV is still clunky compared to JRiver but I'd like to still customize some things so hopefully sometime soon I will be able to.

FWIW there is no technical barrier here - the rendering backend already fully supports these shaders. It is entirely a UI issue.

The shaders are in C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 31\Data\Default Resources\JRVR but I guess just the ones that are built into JRiver?

What are some good shaders a person might want to try?  How do we apply them?

You have to download them and add to JRVR settings under the processing tab.

I like filmgrain smooth - https://github.com/haasn/gentoo-conf/blob/xor/home/nand/.mpv/shaders/filmgrain-smooth.glsl

Also for me I have a high end 3-chip 1080p DLP so I downscale all 4k and JRVR was ok but SSIM is better - https://gist.github.com/igv/36508af3ffc84410fe39761d6969be10

Thanks... I'll load some of these up and see how they look.

*edit*  I like that this adds some consistency between films in the amount of film grain.  I thought it might looks bad in movies that already had some present, but it doesn't seem to at all.  With the SSIM downscaler (I use this in MadVR) are you just setting the JRVR downscaling to billinear when you have SSIM active?

I like a little film grain in my renderer if upscaling is involved. It's arguably not 'accurate' but it's *really* good at tricking the eye.

Has anyone seen a shader that could be used to improve a silent film that has the very saturated tinting added?  I have a grayscale shader, and that is ok... but I'm looking for something like, maybe, a soft sepia, or desaturation that would make it look more vintage, but also watchable.

Also... is there a way to add a shader for just one film?  The silent film, for example... I would like to have a shader set each time I open this film, but, obviously, would not want this to apply to any other movie.  Changing it manually for one film, each time, is kind of clunky.

You could setup a "silent film" profile, and then select the profile from the menus while the film is running, MC will remember the profile override.
It might get out of hand if you want to do this for a lot of different things, but if its broad categories it would be fine.
