I'm trying to move from windows to Linux,( been a long time user of MC).  Anyway, I installed the latest version of Linux Mint 21.2 and then used the Linux MC installer from Here:

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,135999.0.html?PHPSESSID=iqde622ic37tekkpkujpqhtrd4
I did not use the terminal to do anything.  (kind of new to Linux)

It will not play my flac files, mp3 ok.  Celluloid can play my flac files, I can stream youtube fine.  I'm thinking I must be missing some codec's.  During installation in windows, you get a screen where you can check off what AV files you want MC to be your default player for. If it needs any additional ones it grabs them automatically.  Does the Linux version do that?

Any help appreciated.  I'm really determined to get this working properly in Linux.  It's so much faster than Windows.

Is the flac package installed?

`apt list --installed | grep flac`

And the binary is available?

`which flac`

I ask because Mint uses different package naming conventions than Debian or even *buntu sometimes.

If you can't nail it down I'd recommend installing the Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix instead of Mint, it's a little closer to upstream with a similar user experience.

This from  apt list --installed | grep flac
libflac8/jammy-updates,jammy-security,now 1.3.3-2ubuntu0.1 amd64 [installed]
libflac8/jammy-updates,jammy-security,now 1.3.3-2ubuntu0.1 i386 [installed,automatic]
nothing from 'which flac'
I may take your advice and d/l the Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix and install it instead.  I'm too new to the linux experience and could easily screw things up.  I can't do it today but maybe on Friday.
Thanks for the quick reply!

You should just need to install the flac package then:

`sudo apt-get install flac`

WOW!!!   Thanks, that did it!
So does the linux version not automatically download any codecs it needs like the windows version does?
I have a lot of m2ts blu ray files I'll be needing codecs for.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi, very casual (audio only) Linux Mint user since Mint 17 here.

I think you didn't tick the box to install the codecs package 'mint-meta-codecs' (or were offline) during installation of the OS.

Here is a link to the Mint documentation explaining how to add the package after install.
https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/codecs.html

This should give you all the codec support you need to run MC (or any other media player).

Thanks for the link!   I don't remember seeing the checkbox you mentioned, so yeah, probably missing them all.  I'm really impressed with how quickly I've been getting help here.  Thanks everyone!

Is there some basic guide for Linux newbies you'd recommend.  I need to learn the basics.  I appreciate all the help I'm getting, but if it breaks I might be up the proverbial creek!

If you mean a guide for Linux in general, I can strongly recommend this book which is available for free in electronic form from the author here:  https://www.linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php

It's self-describes as an introduction to basic command line activities for Linux beginners, but it actually covers tons of Linux system basics, like file permissions, how to get more information about commands or the system, how to parse logs, etc.  It was the second or third book I read about Linux, and I wish it had been the first!

So does the linux version not automatically download any codecs it needs like the windows version does?

If only it was that simple. On Linux, different distros can use different package managers (and/or have packages named differently) which complicates things and basically makes it where it can't do this. Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint all use APT, Fedora uses DNF, Arch Linux uses pacman, etc.

Glad it was a simple fix though. :D

MC doesn't need or use the system FLAC packages to play local files so I don't have any explanation for why installing that for you made it work.

Thanks for all the help everyone!  I've been busy and not able to reply but do have an additional question (or 2).  I looked in the synaptic package manager and it appears the codecs WERE installed.  Why the FLAC didn't just work I don't know either, but they work now and I'm grateful! :)  In my windows installation (linux now)  my video files were on a network drive connected to my Synology router.  Since I never really accesed the drive from any place other than my HTPC, I just moved the drive and connected it directly to a USB port on my HTPC.  I imported the videos into MC31 but I don't think it can find the path to the M2TS files, when I click on the movie picture under Videos.  If I use the open file menu and manually navigate to the M2TS file it plays it fine.  All my bluray disks are ripped to M2TS format.  The entire movie is in a single file.

The typical path to a movie would be like this:

-Elements (the WD external Drive)
  -@sharebin
    - Video
       -Action
        -National Treasure
         -BDMV
          -Stream
            -m2ts file

I won't be using it as a network drive.  IS the @sharebin screwing things up?  should I just move the Video folder to the root directory?  (I realize I'd need to reimport them if I did that)

Thank you all, I'm sure it's probably something simple, but the learning curve for Linux is fairly steep and I want to be able to enjoy my music and video collection sometime before the next ice age.  ;)

I may be wrong here (hopefully one of the devs or someone else who does this can correct me if I'm wrong) but I was under the assumption rips of both DVD and Blu-Ray in folder structures (and ISOs) don't work under Linux and work under only Windows? I also was under the assumption the only way to playback DVD/BD media on Linux was to rip it to MKV using MakeMKV? I'm not sure if that's changed, so again, I may be wrong here.

The M2TS files play fine, JRiver just isn't finding them in the current directory structure.  I'd believe the part about my directory structure being off though...  I'll have to experiment.  Thanks for your input, every little bit helps!

Have a look at this post here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,134933.0.html
It confirms what AD is saying regarding bluray and dvd folder structures.
I would recommend converting the rips to mkv files (using Makemkv) if you want to use them on MC for Linux.

Thanks to everyone whose helped out!  I'll check out the post you listed terrym  and AD thanks for your help too.  I hear what you're saying about the MKV files,  but seems like the M2TS rips are fine.  Will I loose quality converting my M2TS to MKV?  NOt sure I see what the advantage would be.
Appreciate the help!   :)

No. The one thing you will lose is BD menus (which don't work on MC for Mac or Linux anyways), otherwise ripping using MakeMKV is lossless (as long as you don't transcode) and rips BD discs to files, e.g. the main movie as a single file. The upside to it is, you can rip discs and just rip the movie only with no special features if you want. The downside is no menus and no easy way to manage special features like deleted scenes, etc.

I don't get the menu's on my M2TS files either, so no change there.  Guess I'm not sure of the benefit of converting my M2TS files to MKV, (theres quite a few) if the M2TS files are playing ok.  Smaller file size?  Guess I can try a couple and see.
