We took all the Windows Media components out of the download and made them optional.  When you try to play WM or encode, MC will then offer to download them (around 4MB).

It only needs to download if the Windows Media codecs aren't installed.  If you've installed a previous MC, they're already there.

It does now. Thanks.

I'm running out of things to complain about.

Does the problem with Windows Media 9 and Media Center 9 still exist?

I just remembered another. The plugins (all both of them) won't install correctly. The message says "failed to install ...enc_mp3.zip"

This is the link. Is that correct?

OK. I can ALWAYS find something to complain about.

Can't convert from anything to anything. I assume that means I can only rip to wav or ape. OGG behaved as if it might work but stopped working after "decoding". The MP3 encoder codec won't install nor will anything else on the plug-ins pages. I get a "Failed to install..." message.

Outstanding Build!!!

My CD burner is working perfectly  (whatever changes you made for the sony burner apparently fixed mine as well), and the ipod is synching and resynching perfectly.   All major issues resolved!!

The only issues I have left are very minor ones:

1.  I'd like to be able to use --alt-preset standard settings for the LAME encoder--hopefully MC9 will allow for custom settings in the future.  I used to be able to use my LAME encoder, which I can configure for these settings then use through MC9 as an external encoder, but I get an error message now when I try it...

2.  One feature that would be very nice for those of us addicted to smartlists:    It would be helpful if you could pull up the various smartlist parameters for a given field when tagging new music.  For example, I have a few custom fields--such as "subgenre".  I also use the composer field, and the comment field, etc.  What I'd like to be able to do is, after importing a newly ripped mp3, right click on a particular field and see what my smartlist choices are  (and better yet, then be able to click on one of the choices to fill in the field).  Right now, the only way I can do this is to go to the smartlist itself, to find out which parmaters belong in which field, then go back to the imorted song, then fill it in.  It would make tagging the fields (at least with smartlists in mind) more convienent.   When you right click on  a field, the small grey menu box with "play" at the top, and "properties" at the bottom comes up, somewhere on this menu box would be the ideal place for an option like this.
Forgive me if there already is a simple way to do this, or if this is totally impractical or impossible to add...

Again, thanks for all the hard work--this latest build is fantastic!!

Am I missing something here?. Media Server stopped working locally. Remotely works fine. I just got connected to one of you and downloaded a library. But locally, it refuses to find the server. Very weird.  ?

I'm getting frustrated. I want MC9 to be my default media player, and since I can't uninstall WMP8 from Windows XP, I've just removed all file associations from WMP.

Unfortunately, MC9 doesn't seem to be claiming the file associations on a regular basis. I'll click "ALL" and then go back and they'll all be un-checked again. I tell it to reclaim and I run the scheduler, and still the darned Windows Media ends up playing my video files.

I hate WMP. I just want Media Center to do everything. Why won't the file associations stick?

Bug: TrackInfo pages periodically re-paints for no apparent reason. This was also present in 113 & 114, but may have been in earlier versions as well. This happens with all TrackInfo templates I've checked.

The re-paint issue occurs regardless of Internal vs. Windowed mode.

I had this problem with 9.0.105 and now again with 9.0.115. I'm using Windows XP Professional.

Every time I try to play an mp3 (all encoded with 8.0), the player crashes. What's the problem?

I'm having the same problem as mfwicker.  All my file are APE format.  Every time I start to play a file MC9 crashes.  Have not uninstalled and reinstalled yet.  May try tomorrow but now I've got to get to bed (wife will make me sleep on the couch otherwise).  Tried changing playback mode, settings, with and without DSP to no avail.  Thanks for the time guys.  Night! :)

Oh!  Running XP home edition (well, you'll see below)

This is a great product!

Bugs (previously reported, still exist)

1. Import Media (Mp3 files): When reading artist, if TPE2 contains data, artist is filled with data from TPE2.  If TPE2 is blank, then artist is filled with data from TPE1.  You should be consistent.  Artist should always correspond to data from TPE1.

2. For Media library icon in the organizational tree, you removed the yellow arrow.  Yet, on the toolbar, the media library icon still contains this arrow. Remove it in order to be consistent.

Nitpicks/tiny wishes

1. In display and view settings, I entered a path for my own image in the Display Image location.  Now, if I play a mix of songs where some contain album art and some do not, those with album art display the art properly in the track info section of the display pane.  However, if there is no album art, the track info shows the J River logo in the place where the album art should be.  Shouldn’t it display the image I selected in the “Display Image Location” setting instead?  That’s what I would prefer.

2. Perhaps not many out there are using this for classical music, but two nice adds would be

a. In Burn CD options for Rearranging CD folders, add two more: "Composer" and "Composer - Album"

b. reading other MP3 tags: Higher priority: Add database fields for TPE2 (Band/Orchestra), TPE3 (conductor/performer refinement), and TIT1 (Content Group Description). Lower priority: also add TKEY, TPE4, TIT3, TPUB

:) Thanks, smaller and faster for installation.

Just something which may not be a bug  ?. Please, let me know how some album are recognized as "complete" or "incomplete' in the left window tree. I tried to move a complete album from "Single artist (incomplete)" to "Single artist (complete)" in the Media Library - Audio - Album type/Album/Name directory without success.
Without such a facility, the Album type/Album/Name directory looks unusefull.

Thank you very much! I didn't like to install it with the new WMA 9 codecs, they scare me! I still think there is some dirty trick in there that might mess up playback of MP3 or other "open formats" some time in the future. A patended M$ timebomb...

That's when my strategy with frequent images of the system partition comes into play, I have now restored the image which has beta 107, without the offending codec and will install beta 115. 8)

Build 115: I am stiil having problems with some mp3 files (which normally play perfectly) burned to audio CD (decode directly). Playback from CD is at wrong speed, subsequent track times and gaps not synchronised and there is an accumulated silence of nearly 2 minutes at the end of the last track.

Timings/ gaps work OK up until bad track

INSTALLATION
- no desktop icon
     ** WORKING AS OF RELEASE 9.0.115 **
- Jrivers program folder (in Start menu) is empty
     ** WORKING AS OF RELEASE 9.0.115 **

EDIT
- works ok when editing a single file (not via properties)
- painfully (and I really mean painfully) slow if I edit through properties although it seems to be only on some fields, namely the 'Name' field
- freezes in properties after two or three changes

RIPPING
- fails with a 'Read track failed. Unknown error = 1' message although the cd I'm trying to rip, plays ok through MC

OPTIONS
- Device Settings/Type is greyed out. Only 'Auto Config' is available

TRACK INFO TEMPLATES
-     Displaying 'Notes' on various templates show the lyrics instead of notes

Im gettting a big "POP" if I skip to the next track .. even sometimes get one when I move the current track position (jump to the middle of the song) ...

I have never had problems like this, and I test all builds ... All settings are the same .. (Replay Gain ON, Clipping Protection) ...    All songs have this issue ..

MC 9.0.115
*NEW
- Last played and Number plays now changes, BUT in the middle of the song. So when the song is played to the end, it shows "played 3min 21 sec ago". This can't be right.
- Importing sometimes uses some other field than artist in tag, TPE2 I believe, even though "ID3v1 Tag - Artist" and "ID3v2 Tag - TPE1" is filled out
*OLD
- Tooltip in notification area doesn't display '&'
- Analyzing audio sets Replay Gain to '?'. As a side effect, the "skip analyzed files" don't work since Replay Gain is resetted.
- Shift-Deleting a file in Playing Now reorders the list after the current sorting order
 Before:
 9 Delerium Enchanted
 5 Delerium Silence
 1 Depeche Mode Somebody
 After:
 1 Delerium Enchanted
 2 Delerium Silence
 3 Depeche Mode Somebody
- Shift-Deleting (delete from hd checked) bugged. The player pane shows Media Center 9.0 and   "buffering..." It seems that MC loses focus on which file is currently playing and especially which song comes next. The sound hangs in the end of currently playing track. If you stop and play again, you get the "Please select file to play" dialog.
- Auto Smartlist "Top Hits -- haven't heard for over a year" doesn't include numberplays keyword, so it really doesn't show any "Top Hits". Same issue for "Top Hits -- listened to today"
- Bug with resizing MC. To reproduce:
1. Select a smartlist
1. Right click on an item in the search panel and select "Edit by typing".
2. Try to resize MC. It doesn't work until you change view to another playlist or scheme.
- Search field doesn't support 'å' 'ä' and 'ö' (produces a box)
- The slider in File Properties (state docked or not, doesn't matter) flickers between skinned and windows standard when dragged or clicked
- Media Center is named Media Jukebox in Task Manager - Processes
- View Scheme doesn't work with Date Imported. Shows the different date in  the tree, but nothing under each item (search panel shows: [Date Imported]=[16 days, 10 hours ago]...perhaps it should convert to a date?). With grouping, it only shows 0-9...

Haven't tested, but not reported as fixed:
- Installer doesn't remove old install entries in add/remove programs. (Media jukebox entry) Can't check, have made a reinstall of Windows, please confirm
- Can't copy/paste correctly in Search panel (copy an item and try to paste it into another smartlist)
- Search panel wizard flukey. Doesn't work nicely with Replay Gain, lists a thousand different values and trying to get 0 OR ? files is impossible, wants to show all 0 AND empty. By the way, the wizard's <empty> doesn't work. IMHO it should be totally re-written/designed.
- Undo doesn't work when pasting from one search panel to another
*FIXED
- Importing an album re-tags the track# from 0x to x (from explorer - rightclick on folder - MC - Import)
- Wheel-scrolling in any list doesn't use system settings. Instead it always scroll 1 line at a time (my system setting is 3 lines to speed things up), causing scrolling through long lists a minor pain UPDATE: Actually works in File Properties...but there the slider flickers..:)

Vertical scroll bar in the main pane doesn't scroll unless you grab the bar and drag it... the arrows don't work.

Good morning, Matt,

Good news! Fixed: The Rotation command now works on all the test cases that failed Friday. No mistakes at all so far; I've rotated about 30 images. No error trace messages are displayed, either.

Fixed: MC9 now properly reads and displays files with the JPEG extension as well as JPG files.

Still broken: "Last Played" and "Number of Plays" are not updated when playing image files.

Still broken: Please look at the artist/album grouping as it appears for these images. I have selected the Artist "> France". There are no images with an artist of "> France / > Belgium".

You can see TWO images for the Album Thalys to Amsterdam - one with the Artist > France and the other as (Multiple Artists). The same thing occurs with the Album Thalys to Paris.

The entry > France is actually the Artist field. This problem is very odd... how can multiple artists exist when I've selected a tree entry that limits the Artist to one value: > France.

If this were the music world, it would be like Lawrence Welk and Nine Inch Nails each released an album named "Bubbles", and MC9 reports it as (Multiple Artists). Which, come to think of it, would be a good test case if anyone has two albums with the same name, from different artists.

I believe the problem results from the entries in the Aritist > Belgium. Both Albums showing the problem in > France share the same name with entries in > Belgium, as though a list was not cleared when moving between Artists.

I'm hoping that MC9 does not assume that a Multiple Artist album exists, when there are actually just two albums coincidentally sharing the same name.

  • Fixed: Taking Media Server Options causes the server to crash.
  • Fixed: Data CD writes on my Sony drive fail with "Can't start the write.", "Failed: Open session. Invalid field in parameter list".  Data CD writes to the TDK drive work fine.  I'm taking JohnT at his word here since I'm waiting for the drive I sent him to make it's way back. :)

  • New: Auto-Rip keeps prompting for the next CD without ripping the current one.

  • Converter won't convert to UNC destination directory.  Says "Failed" for each track but updates the Filename property as though it had completed.
  • The YADB track lookup will only work in small batches.  I just tried a batch of 14 track from "Neko Case" "Blacklisted" and got the last 4 tracks only.  Had to go back and do 4 at a time to get them all.
  • "Decode files directly to CD" is both on the main CD writer settings page and the settings sub-page but the checkboxes aren't synchronized.
  • Now that you can get past the "Invalid Media Server Information" message box when searching for media servers, I still get multiple duplicate replies from the server if either the server or client have multiple network interfaces.
  • When the media server responds to a search, it responds with the first interface it's bound to even if that interface isn't reachable by the client that issued the search request.   My server has 2 interfaces, one private, one public.  My laptop is on the public network.  I issue a search from the laptop and the server responds with the name and ip address of the private interface which the laptop can never reach.  Combined with the previous problem, I can get 4 responses for the private interface, all useless.
  • If the client actually gets only 1 response, it tries to connect immediately.  It should problably give you an option to see the response and confirm that you want to connect to it.
  • If you cancel out of the list box with the responses you get a "failed to connect" message and you get dumped into the default library instead of the library you were originally connected to.
  • Column widths aren't saving again.  You have to drag the column separator twice to get the first change to stick.
  • When "Decode directly to CD" is unchecked, and you burn more than 1 CD, the raw temp file is deleted and recreated for each CD instead of using the one created at the start of the first burn.
  • In "File Naming and Location" you can't enter paths with leading or trailing periods.  I.E.  If I try to enter a path for track images like "m:\.coverart" the period gets stripped out as soon as I move the cursor out of the entry field. Any valid file system path should be allowed.
  • Can't turn off tooltips for the drop target and player controls.
  • Analyze audio during rip doesn't do anything.
  • When collapsing "Auto Smartlists (audio)" after selecting one of the random or favorite lists, the app hangs for about 10 seconds while spinning the cpu at 100%. (maybe not a "problem", but it's still a pain)
  • Ripping in digital secure mode hangs near the end of the last audio track if there is also a data track on the cd.  Have to cancel, wait for everything to release, then rip the last track in digital large buffer mode.

Remy,

Thanks for sending your drive in.  I was having problems burning data CDs with my drive  (Yamaha), whatever they did to fix your problem fixed mine as well.

You may be running something else on the same port.  Try another port.  If you need more help, please start a new thread.

Two issues not running in MC like in MJ:

1. Custom Fields 1-3 are not displayed with their respective DISPLAY name (as shown in TOOLS/OPTIONS) in PROPERTIES but with Custom 1, C....

2. DSP-Studio Equalizer is not "editable" in Mini-ME skins. Wasn't this possible in MJ.

Regards ...

You might want to try to find out what's using it.  Bad programs can do bad things.

File sharing programs use a port.

Try shutting software down, one application at a time.

"Netstat -an" (without quotes) from a DOS prompt will show you which ports are in use.
