Optical outpput convert to use an external DAC
« on: November 24, 2023, 09:46:11 am »

I have a DAC within my AV Preamp, to use this I bought a USB to TOSLINK converter, since the AV amp has a TOSLINK optical input.

Is MC doing any converting at all or is the DAC doing all the converting into analogue?

I am noting distortion on some of my files and I am still trying to figure out where that is coming from. I also have a Scarlet Solo DAC that I also used previously.  The Scarlett provides a slightly smoother sounding output.  I am still testing to see if it is the DACs, the preamp, power amps or speakers to isolate the issue.

Just wondering what the audio engine of MC is doing.

Many thanks.

You can look at Audio Path to see all the details about the outgoing audio.

Ok. Thanks.

So how do I do this? Where can I look at "Audio Path"?

Thanks

So I had a look a this:

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Path

but this is not very clear to my simple mind.  What I would like to know is:  "does MC process the signal and then send that digital signal down the USB cable to be converted to an optical signal via he converter which then gets sent to the DAC in the Pre amp?"

Whether or not JRiver "processes" the signal depends on how you have it configured. Looking at the audio path as shown in the Wiki will show you what, if any, processing is happening.

I looked at the wiki and from that I can't figure out if any processing is taking place.

The output is configured to output to the sound card.  Does that help?

Post a screen shot of the audio path and maybe someone can interpret it for you.
Does it matter? Are you happy with the sound quality? Is there a problem that you are trying to solve or are you just curious?
