Media Center 9.0.110 beta
« on: February 11, 2003, 11:36:33 am »

Media Center 9.0.110 beta is available.

Many things will crash and not work.  If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90110.exe

Changes

1. Fixed: Converting file to an untagged format (e.g. wave) would not preserve the original track name.
2. Fixed: Decoder was using Replay Gain settings from zone 0.  If you ever had Replay Gain on while analyzing files, you should reanalyze.
3. Changed: Double-click in "My Computer" part of tree now does double-click action -- like Media Library and Playlists.
4. Fixed: Possible crash vunerability in APEv2 tagging from malicious tags. (affects APE and MPC)
5. Changed: APEv2 string fields stored without NULL terminators because some programs don't gracefully handle them. (EAC)
6. Changed: Rearranged title bar in sound recorder so encoding bps can always be seen.
7. Fixed: Media Center would not work with MS Proxy or ISA server.
8. Fixed: Thumbnails (with album grouping) no longer groups to albums if only one album is present in a view.
9. Fixed: Creating a playlist before expanding the playlist part of the tree would cause the playlist tree to not fill properly.
10. NEW: Added "Move / Copy Fields..." file property tool.
11. Fixed: Media Server would not work in some cases.
12. Changed: DVD playback now uses newer DirectX 8 interfaces.
13. Fixed: Default mega-me skin would swithed to unskinned while upgrading from Media Jukebox 8.0 to Media Center 9.0.
14. NEW: Added several Hairstyle enhancements. (album grouping, more options, etc.)

We're still getting more bugs reported than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

- Get Cover art from Internet now brings up the Move Copy Fields box

- Left tree collapses on startup

- When sending e.g. 5 mp3's to external tool MP3Gain, it opens 5 times MP3Gain i.s.o. Adding those 5 files to 1 MP3Gain and those 5 MP3Gain instances have all the same file in it.

- When deleting a file with shift from Playing now when a song is playing, the focus of the currently playing song is gone

1)The Playlist scrol bar does not scroll in Min-Me skins

2)Clicking a ***.rm link downloads the file instead of streaming it.  If I cut and paste the link in to "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

3)Clicking on a ***.ram link does nothing.  Again, if I cut and paste it into "Open URL of streaming file" dialog box, the file streams fine.

BOTH file types are registered under MC9 in IE Folder options.

4) Noise, with Replay Gain enabled, in songs that are recorded at HIGHER volume than playlist average.  Clip protection is enabled.  Restarting the song usually eliminates the problem.

5)If you check the remember volume setting option; MC9 does not reset it back to pre-MC9 level when the program is closed.

It continues not working (in my case).

On the server side:

Server initialized
02/11/03 23:15:45 - sharer ready to accept connections
02/11/03 23:15:45 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.

02/11/03 23:17:00 - tcp_write failed error=10054
02/11/03 23:17:00 - sharing thread exiting

On the client side:

'cancel' the "connecting...." can hang MC.

My family is angry against me (they cannot use anymore MC on their PC). I say them "it is a beta", they answer me "You are beta" (ok, only french people can understand, I think...).

ASIO have a little problem. I had to increase the buffer size to the maximum, if not the music sounds distorted. I have all DSPs on!. I noticed that cpu usage is very high (50%). This is my system:

Some praise:
Thanks a lot for the "move/copy fields" tool. Very handy.

Thanks for the changes to Hairstyle's button graphic setup and the new album grouping.

Some questions:
Are all the "rect" settings for Hairstyle's code percentage values? Is there/will there be a way around this to specify pixel values for more precise control?

Is the ability to sort the tree view still a feature under consideration? I'm not sure if anyone ever came to a conclusion on that one...but I'd love it to become a reality.

Was there ever a decision on what to do with the "album artist" field? I suppose if it was returned to the functionality it had in MJ8, then I could use that as a sorting method for the tree view (only bands starting with "the" in them would be given an album artist tag without the "the" so that it'd truly be sorted alphabetically).

I narrowed down my problem when I use Output Format. Oh besides that I had to increase the soundcard buffer size in the control panel of the M-audio Revolution. ;D

Hi,

a) I've just upgraded by sound card to Aureon 7.1.  It is very good, and the hiccups are now gone.

b) However, my volume scrollbar is now disabled.  Can anyone look at this problem.  I can only control the volume from the Aureon control panel, or the master control on my keyboard.

Thanks, it even includes fields swaping, that's even more than expected !

Still the same visualization and track info pbms :
in Vizualiation studio, the text field of the text widget can't be seen once edited
also the year field does not display in

in Track info: TRACK_INFO_CUSTOM# does not display the corresponding data
should TRACK_INFO_COMPOSER also work ?

Everything is percentages for scalability reasons. (Hairstyle needs to look good at a lot of different resolutions)  If you have specific requests / suggestions, start a new thread and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for your help.

Bugs

1. Import Media (Mp3 files): When reading artist, if TPE2 contains data, artist is filled with data from TPE2.  If TPE2 is blank, then artist is filled with data from TPE1.  You should be consistent.  Artist should always correspond to data from TPE1.

2. In display and view settings, I entered a path for my own image in the Display Image location.  Now, if I play a mix of songs where some contain album art and some do not, those with album art display the art properly in the track info section of the display pane.  However, if there is no album art, the track info screen shows the J River logo in the place where the album art should be.  Shouldn’t it display the image I selected in the “Display Image Location” setting instead?  That’s what I would prefer.

3. For Media library icon in the organizational tree, you removed the yellow arrow.  Yet, on the toolbar, the media library icon still contains this arrow. Remove it.

4. Selecting Tools/Get Cover Art From Internet brings up the Move/Copy fields dialog box

Requests

1. Other MP3 tags: Higher priority: Add database fields for TPE2 (Band/Orchestra), TPE3 (conductor/performer refinement), and TIT1 (Content Group Description). Lower priority: also add TKEY, TPE4, TIT3, TPUB

2. Add ability to export library to .txt or .csv file. (I know I can highlight a list and copy and paste, but an export function seems like a logical thing to have in addition to XML).

3. Incorporate online TV guide such as Gemstar GuidePlus+

Hi Matt

12. Changed: DVD playback now uses newer DirectX 8 interfaces

Thanks for doing something with the DVD side of MC.

I realy appreciate it!

Only had time to check two DVDs.

One store bought, the other made.

The store bought brings up the Menu.

Hurray, hurray, hurray. (finally)

The self made, MC does not bring up the menu, but MC does plays the background sound for the menu.

I have no prob. playing either of these with windows media player or ATIs. The menu comes up in both.

The one thing I did see, was:
Store bought DVD--- IN MC (full screen) bottom left, reads DVD.
Self made DVD--- bottom left, reads Windows Media Player.

??

Have any time for autorun?

Thanks
Griff

MC 9.0.110
*NEW
- Bug with resizing MC. To reproduce:
1. Select a smartlist
1. Right click on an item in the search panel and select "Edit by typing".
2. Try to resize MC. It doesn't work until you change view to another playlist or scheme.
*OLD
- Search field doesn't support 'å' (produces a box)
- Warning during install "Low system resources. Please close all running applications". Resources are NOT low
- Auto Smartlist "Top Hits -- haven't heard for over a year" doesn't include numberplays keyword, so it really doesn't show any "Top Hits". Same issue for "Top Hits -- listened to today"
- View Scheme doesn't work with Date Imported. Shows the different date in  the tree, but nothing under each item (search panel shows: [Date Imported]=[16 days, 10 hours ago]...perhaps it should convert to   a date?)
- The slider in File Properties (state docked or not, doesn't matter) flickers between skinned and windows standard when dragged or clicked
- Can't copy/paste correctly in Search panel (copy an item and try to paste it into another smartlist)
- Search panel wizard flukey. Doesn't work nicely with Replay Gain, lists a thousand different values and trying to get 0 OR ? files is impossible, wants to show all 0 AND empty. By the way, the wizard's <empty> doesn't work. IMHO it should be totally re-written/designed.
- Analyzing audio sets Replay Gain to '?'. As a side effect, the "skip analyzed files" don't work since Replay Gain is resetted.
- Undo doesn't work when pasting from one search panel to another
- Installer doesn't remove old install entries in add/remove programs. (Media jukebox entry)
- Media Center is named Media Jukebox in Task Manager - Processes
- Shift-Deleting a file in Playing Now reorders the list after the current sorting order
 Before:
 9 Delerium Enchanted
 5 Delerium Silence
 1 Depeche Mode Somebody
 After:
 1 Delerium Enchanted
 2 Delerium Silence
 3 Depeche Mode Somebody
- Shift-Deleting (delete from hd checked) bugged. The player pane shows Media Center 9.0 and   "buffering..." It seems that MC loses focus on which file is currently playing and especially which song comes next. The sound hangs in the end of currently playing track. If you stop and play again, you get the "Please select file to play" dialog.
- Wheel-scrolling in any list doesn't use system settings. Instead it always scroll 1 line at a time (my system setting is 3 lines to speed things up), causing scrolling through long lists a minor pain
*FIXED
- Auto Smartlist "Recently Imported -- last 100 tracks" sets a time limit of 10080. Perhaps there should be no time limit at all since you want to see the last 100 items? UPDATE: '~n=100' fixes the 'last 100' bug

ID3 tags are still not being written properly by MC. When checked by a seperate tag reading program there is no track name or number listed in the appropriate spots. Or anything else for that matter. The only thing that shows is absolute filenaming convention specified in options.

E.G: The Cranberries>To the Faithful Departed > 01 Hollywood Where's the track#, track name, genre, year? ID3 versions are what I'm speaking about. Not the  track# - filename.

It creates the folders in the directory where it's supposed to. But all id3 tags are blank. Tags (for mp3 in this case) are set up in the plugin manager (input) to: Save (create if necessary).

Back to EAC. Sigh....

Try to disable the DSPs and if you are using ASIO, just increase the buffer size in the control panel of your soundcard. :-/

Fixed:  Ipod plugin working perfectly--downloaded properly with the new version, and this time synched properly; all playlists appropriately included.

Bugs:

1.  When burning a data (mp3) cd:  still get the illegal mode for this track message in the status bar after attempting to burn, again it occurs immediately at the end of the session.

2.  I can rip/encode now using MC9's LAME plugin, but I cannot get my external encoder that I prefer to work  (I love the LAME encoder, but I prefer the --alt-preset standard setting, as do a number of fellow ipodloungers.  Apparently in the past, you could customize the the encoder settings, now you can't).  I have been using my LAME encoder with the --alt-preset standard setting as my "external encoder," but now I can't--I get an error message when I set it up--"read track failed unknown error=1".  I'd prefer MC 9 to allow for the --alt-preset standard setting, and I think it would be to MC9's advantage to support this--a number of people prefer these settings, and use EAC/LAME to get them.  With MC'9s ripper having a digital secure mode, the EAC ripper is not much of an issue, but it would be great to configure the LAME encoder as I mentioned--it would be a big selling point for a vocal minority).

3.  Customize toolbar is still not working  (works fine on my 'puter running windows NT).

4.  Top of Tekno skin cut off.

Bugs:
1. Year not shown in visualizations-been this way since the first unicode build. Will randomly show Artist or previous song title.

2. Resize Mega_Me somtimes cause Album image in Visualization to revert to default(MJ surfer) image. Note images stored in files. Album image returns if cycle to next vis and back or on track change.

I am seeing many issues with the new "output format" thingy. Seems to cause MC to just close w/o any error most times I try to enable it. When it doesn't cause MC to close I am unable to discern any difference between 2 and 4 channel settings. Is this just not really implemented yet?

7. Fixed: Media Center would not work with MS Proxy or ISA server.

Many Thanks!  I can now complete an import by scanning my drive since the auto plug-in download now works through my ISA Server.

Any instructions or tips on using the channel selection for DirectSound in conjunction with multiple zones?  With my SB Live I keep getting sound from all 3 of my zones on the same output even though each is supposed to be routed to its own output.

Thanks for the fix on the audio analyzer. I analyzed 400 tracks that i had waiting no problems.

Any chance you can have a look at the jpeg rotate as it hasn't been working here since about the time the analyzer got broke.

Re: Media Center 9.0.110 beta - Replay Gain
« Reply #25 on: February 11, 2003, 10:04:34 pm »

Sorry, but after installing 9.0.110 I have testet "analyze audio" again - without success.
The files I have tried were not used by another tool (e.g. MP3Gain) but with an early version of MC9. It was also working with v8 on the same files. What happens:
- Replay gain is left blank (or "?") after analyzing
- BPM and density are filled with values.
- Peak level always stays at 100%

What I have tried is independent from DSP setting, even if all otions within DSP are turned off, results are the same. ?

kind regards, Hans.

INSTALLATION
- message warning of low system resource
- hh_portable.dll plug-in failed
- ** WORKING AS OF RELEASE 9.0.110 **
- no sign of pop-up for choice of skins
** not quite true-if I select custom instal instead of express, then it shows…is that correct ?
- no desktop icon
- Jrivers program folder (in Start menu) is empty
** although the last two items seem trivial, don't they show something amiss in the installation procedure?

VOLUME
- No volume control slider
- Ctrl++ inoperative
- Ctrl+- inoperative
- Ctrl+M inoperative
This was ok up until somewhere around 90088 and then disappeared. I've tried disabling/enabling the sound drivers many times as well as uninstalling/reinstalling MC more times than I care to remember. In trying to remember what was going on at that time, I had a big prob with 90088 which screwed up my library. I tried to go back to a previous version but got an error message concerning, I think, that the db was the wrong size. At about the same time, I installed KingS's chartfinder which necessitated the downloading of the MS Runtime files. Could there be a link here maybe ??

EDIT
- works ok when editing a single file (not via properties)
- painfully (and I really mean painfully) slow if I edit through properties although it seems to be only on some fields, namely the 'Name' field
- freezes in properties after two or three changes

PLAYING
- playlists stop with a buffering problem after the first track
** WORKING AS OF RELEASE 9.0.109 **

RIPPING
-     locks up when attempting to access YADB (new problem in 9.0.109)
- fails with a 'Read track failed. Unknown error = 1' message
- the cd I'm trying to rip, plays ok through MC

CD LABELLER
- does'nt print the jpg on the slimline front cover

OPTIONS
- no toolbar buttons available in left-hand panel for customising toolbar
- all toolbar buttons in right-hand panel are described as 'Import Media'
- Device Settings/Type is greyed out. Only 'Auto Config' is available

Bug:

 1.  Media Editor still cannot open files other than WAV.  Decode just sits and spins.

Importing an album re-tags the track# from 0x to x. Using ID3v2 tags...

MC doesn't put leading zero's on numeric fields when it saves them in file tags.  Why would you ever want that?

formating is the only thing i can think of.

but the other thing with Track#'s if you rip a CD that has 12 tracks on it, and i know you fixed a bug with track #'s

But some users might want MC to include the Track # Of # Tracks when the CD is ripped

Like

1/12, 2/12, 3/12, 4/12 etc...

My car MP3 player sorts everything in a folder alpha-numericly; folders are Artist - Album, track names are
"01 -Song #2.mp3"

Otherwise, I get track 1, 10, 11, 12, 2, 3, 4, 5...

And I like my car player a lot... ::)

When you "Rename from Properties", MC pads track number with a 0 for this reason.  If there are places this isn't happening, just let us know and we'll fix it.  So, in filenames (but not tags) I'm totally on board with ya' about padding.

BTW, got any pictures of your baby?
