Rename Option Greyed Out After Making Custom Column
« on: February 26, 2024, 07:58:54 pm »

I want to put the source of the music, either CD rip or web download in a custom column.

I hit add expression column and made one called "Source", but the rename option is greyed out.

When I hit Edit Expression Column it offers:

Insert Field
Insert Function
Insert Variable

And each of those has many options.

I just want to put Rip or Web in the source column, so which of the many options do I choose please?

Isn't Source already an existing library field? Pretty sure it is. You might have to use an alternate that doesn't already exist like Release or something.

None of them. Remove the expression column.

I don't think it's a stock field. It was added as one recently which caused mayhem for everyone who had already added their own, so that got reversed. I'm not home so all of this from memory which isn't the best these days:)

Next, go to "tools > options > library and folders > manage library fields" and add your field named "Source". Of the top of my head, the default selections should be fine for you. Ok your way out. Now back in your view, you can add that source column, then edit directly in the column as you wish.

I just looked at the list of current library fields, and Source is already there on two MC instances (one being a fresh MC32 install). I don't and never used Source so I didn't add them previously. Leftovers? I do seem to recall this sort of thing came up recently.

Release doesn't currently exist though, and if I was going to do this, that's likely the tag I'd use.

Yeah, it appears to be an established library field for something else. What if you use an alternative like Release?

Yes, you are correct, I was using add expression column by right clicking on the columns and while that added the column, the rename was always greyed out.

Once I did it using the manage library fields way you explain I can add my source column and rename the fields perfectly.

Many thanks to you and all the others here for your deep knowledge and advice that has solved my problems so far.

31.0.76 (10/18/2023)

1. Changed: The "Source" field added for a few builds is no longer flagged that it must exist, so you can delete it.

31.0.75 (10/18/2023)

3. Changed: Recently added image-only field "Source" is renamed "Source (Supply Chain)".

You're most welcome.
In case you were wondering... Expression based fields/columns can be used to calculate results on a per file basis. You set the rules and MC then returns the results, and that's why they're not editable. To my mind, they are the most powerful of all the tools in MC's toolbox. They allow you to shape your own MC experience, they way you would like it. You can read all about it on the MC wiki.

So, the old grey matter still functions reasonably well :D Thanks dtc.
