tv recording and time shifting
« on: February 03, 2003, 05:15:33 pm »

Are there any plans to make tv recording and time shifting less processor intensive? I have an ATI AIW 8500dv. The bundled software timeshifts and records fine; however, media center drops huge amounts of packets and will not timeshift. My processor is tached out when recording. I would like to use media center for tv, but it doesn't appear to be as efficient as the ATI bundeled software.

How do you have it set?  What codec, what resolution are you using?

Your machine may not have enough horsepower for higher resolutions.

The default setting in MC records and time-shifts at 640x240 using JRiver Video Codec. This setting I believe is too intensive for your processor. Try using 320x240 with JRiver Video Codec. That should work. If not, try 320x240 with no compression. You have to create a custom profile to do it.

To change profile, Right-click on video screen and select TV Options->Configure TV ... then select the Recording tab.

There is more information on this in the instruction thread near the top of this forum.

And with that processor it's going to max out no matter what codec, resolution and frame rate you use. To seriously consider fault free captures, you should at LEAST triple the processor speed (1.5 gig will do it with no problems) and at the very least, double your RAM. Any codec used will also slow the processor considerably, as encoding video is about as processor intensive as it gets. Go with ucompressed for much better results, but this will also produce much larger file sizes.

I have the same problems with my ATI AIW 8500DV.  Time shifting consumes all processor power and freezes my machine.  Are there particular settings you recommend for my system?  Or, do I just need to bite the bullet and by a machine with a faster processor in order to perform the task?

Well, don't go buyin' fancy new stuff cause of my advice, I'll admit that I have never tried MJ or MC for capturing, it's just a music DB for me. But, I have done quite a bit of video captures in many different formats, and I do know that processor speed in this area is essential. The faster, the better. Face it, todays processor speeds are for games and multimedia, there's nothing more processor intensive than high impact video.

Thanks,

I realize the processor is on the bottom scale of things, but timeshifting and recording work fine with ati  software. I have two other much more powerfull systems but one is my main computer and the other is my Digital Audio Workstation. The one I'm using for media center was my old daw. I don't intend on upgrading it. I will just use the ati software which works for TV and media center for all the rest.

sstrick,

You have the EXACT same setup I do, except I have no TV on the MC machine, used to have an old TVMax, tho, ouch! My DAW has 2.4 running PT, my office machine is a 1.6 and this old 600E running MC. And I did successful caps on the 600e, but nothing close to 720x480 at 30nd.

Also, in my experience with lots of these cap cards, they can be very picky about the software interface. I used to love using Virtual-Dub, but it just won't talk to my Sony digicam the way it did with my cap cards. Anyway...

...hope you get it going soon.

640x240 (the default). Right about the horsepower, but I can do 640x480 w/ ati's software and it works fine. I know if I lower the resolution on your software it will start working, but I have no reason to do that if it works better w/ the free software that comes with the card. I will just use media center for audio and ati's software for video. It just seems like if your codec were more efficient it would appeal to a broader number of users.

Thanks,

I just got done done building my DAW from the ground up. I have an AMD 2800+ w/ 1GB of PC400 RAM and a layla audio card. It smokes. I have noticed the all in wonder card is really picky about whats running (not so stable when certain software combos are running). I'm just happy I can play my mp3 collection on my home theater system now. Everything else is just gravy.

Thanks,

I will try the no compression route, the will probably help considerably. I just want to record a thing here or there.

Lovely, isn't she?  ;D
I still have her and a Gina too.

Yea, combos, there it is, and my guess is that MC might be loading something that's causing your combo conflict with your cap card. So, with MC open, will your cap card, using the bundled software, work correctly?

Yeah it's worked great for me through 4 OS's win98se, winme, w2k, and winxp. Always rock solid.

I think you might be on to something with combo. I'll play with it.

Hi

but timeshifting and recording work fine with ati  software.

ATI does hardware compression not software.

Have a nice day.
