DSD not working
« on: June 12, 2024, 05:59:43 am »

I have been using JRiver reproducing DSD files for a quite some time. It worked just fine. In a last couple of months I did not play DSD files but mainly PCM. In that period of time there were a couple of MACOS updates. Now I am on the latest Soma 14.5. Today when I wanted to play DSD, it does not work. No error messages, just there is no sound. JRiver says that the source is DOP DSD 64 and that internal is bitstreaming. I am not sure why it is DoP - I do not know any setting where you can explicitely say that you want to have DoP or native DSD ? My DAC (Arcam irDAC II) supports DSD 128 native. Might that be an issue ? But how it worked before ?

I have made bistreaming DSD 128 as max possible bitstreaming option. Also in a Audio Midi Setup I selected the max possible option. I incline to believe that it has something to do with the new version of MACOS ?

Well, there's part of your problem, DoP is the only one supported on macOS.

Make sure DSP Studio > Output Format > Output Encoding is set to None. Also make sure both internal volume and system volume is set to 100% otherwise bitstreaming may fail. If the issue still happens after ensuring those things, you may need to contact the DAC manufacturer.

All these things have been already set as you desribed them. JRiver Volume is also disabled.

Does anybody else have the same problem ?

Only other thing I can think is maybe try toggling the integer mode option in the audio device's settings in MC's Options. I've never tried using Disabled Volume option when bitstreaming DSD, maybe try Internal Volume or System Volume? There's also an option there Enable Volume When Bitstreaming, maybe try toggling that one too?

I tried integer mode disabling. No change. I tried also with system volume (on max). No change.
This option volume when bitstreaming could not find.

But these existing settings have been working before. It has to be a consequence of one of the latest MacOS updates.

I kinda doubt it's related to the OS itself, otherwise there'd be other reports of it. Can you post screenshots of your MC's Options > Audio window, the DSP Studio > Output Format window and the Audio Path when playing back and not hearing anything? Screenshot of the Audio MIDI Setup app likely would help too. Looking at the specs for your DAC it should support both DSD64 and DSD128 over DoP as it supports a max sample rate of 352.8 kHz.

This issue really sounds to me the issue is caused by some volume level isn't set to 100% somewhere because this exact thing can happen where there's no sound on playback (and more importantly no errors).

Also turn on logging in MC and send a log of trying to play a DSD file. MC does extensive logging of the device opening and configuring on playback on MacOS.

Turn off memory playback, you don't want the DSD decoded into memory. If that's it we should probably prevent that from being used.

For reference, I just double checked on mine and the current version plays DSD fine.

Here is the log:
Looking at your log, I do see a difference with mine.
My DAC does 32 bit DSD, yours does 24.

Bob,

According to your screenshots I put integer off, also changed to no memory playback and put buffering just like it is in your setup.

No music playing - nothing changed.

DAC is showing that the signal is coming in but no sound on the output.

That is correct: Arcam supports only 16 until 24 bits. Here is a dac spec:

MC should drop back to 24 bit mode when 32 isn't available. 24 was the only supported rate in old versions of MC.
I'll check the logic since I don't have a 24 bit DSD DAC you might get a test build.

Bob,

Please have in mind that it has been working without problems a couple of months ago.

Ok, I blanked on that. Nothing has changed in that area in MC in the last couple of years.
I'll try it on a newer MacOS than my build machine.

Still works fine for me on a M1 Mac with the current Sonoma.
