JRiver Media Center 33.0.37 for Windows -- Available Here
« on: October 25, 2024, 11:21:24 am »

This is the latest build of JRiver Media Center 33. Please post bugs here. Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion. Non-bug posts will be deleted.

Download 64-bit build
https://files.jriver-cdn.com/mediacenter/channels/v33/latest/MediaCenter330037-x64.exe (works on 64 bit systems only)

Download 32-bit build
https://files.jriver-cdn.com/mediacenter/channels/v33/latest/MediaCenter330037.exe (works on all systems)

33.0.37 (10/24/2024)

1. Changed: The program would flip to Playing Now if something was playing instead of the saved startup view. If startup is "Last Location" it no longer does that.
2. Changed: Added some exploratory logging on Blackmagic DeckLink video capture devices.
3. NEW: Playing Now can be added to DLNA, Gizmo, etc. views that returns a list of zones and each zone returns the files in that zone.
4. Changed: Added support for the .thd file extension for TrueHD Audio.

33.0.36 (10/22/2024)

1. Changed: Removed EnglishTiger skins and track infos.

33.0.35 (10/21/2024)

1. Fixed: Showing Media Center again from server mode could fail to show views or crash in some configurations.
2. Fixed: In PNP, Mute image visibility would not work if there was no volume slider.
3. Fixed: Spotlight Artist pages were failing to retrieve artist images and Wikipedia descriptions.

33.0.34 (10/18/2024)

1. Fixed: Images could go away during playback in some cases.

33.0.33 (10/17/2024)

1. NEW: Added "Zone Index" as another variable that the player window can display.
2. NEW: Added the MCWS function Playback/AudioPathDirect to check for direct playback (also returned from Playback/AudioPath, but that returns lots more).

33.0.32 (10/15/2024)

1. Changed: Mouse wheel zooming image playback will only stop the slideshow if the stop on manual changes option is set.
2. Fixed: Flicking an image off the screen will behave better.
3. Fixed: Quick zoom to levels didn't work nicely when a pan and zoom was running.
4. Changed: Updated Czech translation (thanks Jan Boháč).
5. NEW: Added new Sidebar skin for Playing Now Popup.
6. Changed: Added Mute On (100) and Mute Off (101) to available HideStates for images in PNP skins.

33.0.31 (10/10/2024)

1. NEW: Added a couple extra modes to the ListGrep(...) expression function for full string matching.
2. Fixed: Playing from WASAPI Loopback would hiccup with some hardware.
3. Changed: Slovak translation updated (thanks Peter Lukáč).
4. NEW: Added 3x4 to the choice of printing sizes.

33.0.30 (10/8/2024)

1. NEW: Added a FieldExists expression function.
2. Fixed: If a function was in an expression twice, only the first instance would show a tooltip.
3. NEW: Added [TheMovieDB Movie ID] field, and populate it during movie metadata lookup.
4. NEW: Added [IMDb Series ID] field, and populate it during series metadata lookup.
5. Changed: The focus is no longer set to the search box when opening the tag window so that the spacebar will keep pausing.
6. Changed: For ATSC and DVB tuners, if recording multiple channels on the same tuner, "Show Status" will list all channels being recorded.

thanks for adding this, couple of issues

1) it shows hidden zones, should it? I'm not sure it should but you could argue either way
2) it nests infinitely

e.g. Browse/Children on that new node produces a list of zones with their own ID like

Code: [Select]
<Response Status="OK">

1003

1004

1005

1006

1007

1008

</Response>

if I do Browse/Children?ID=1003 then i get the same list with new IDs

Code: [Select]
<Response Status="OK">

1009

1010

1011

1012

1013

1014

</Response>

this repeats forever (or for at least as long as I could keep clicking)

if I do Browse/Files then it does work as expected but an empty node is the way to know we're at a leaf node so should switch to files so it really means it's turtles all the way down as you navigate :)

it would also be good to let Browse/Image (for Playing Now) use the same icon as for Playlists

Video rotation should be added for landscape videos: 90°, 180°, 270° ......

Hello, everyone! Please add a rotate function to the video playback. This is very useful for video playback shot on cell phones! Please consider adding this feature!

Thank you very much!

Hello everyone! In the process of using it I found that some live streams (.m3u8 | .ts | .mp4...) never play successfully, I hope the dev team can consider and fix this issue! Very 🙏!

Re-step:

Try switching the web browser engine. If it's using Edge try Chromium and if it's using Chromium try Edge and see if that helps.

Hello everyone! I found that the latest version of the theme color is not compatible with the icon color.

Windows 10
JRiver Media Center 33.0.37
I don't know why this started happening for Black on Black skin, but I see the same thing. At least some other dark skins, such as Thunderstorm, have the same problem.

Here is one way to fix it:
(1) Find the skin directory for Black on Black. On Windows it is C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 33\Skins\Standard View\Black on Black. Make a backup copy of the directory.
(2) In the skin directory, open the skin's main.xml file using a text or programming editor with administrator privileges. Near the top of the file, just after the top 2 lines, copy and paste the following code:
Code: [Select]
 <ART>

 </ART>
(3) Save and close the file.
(4) Paste the attached file OptionsTree.png into the skin's directory (I copied it from another MC dark skin folder).
(5) Restart MC.

JRiver can probably explain and fix the root cause, but this should work for now. There may be a simpler fix (like modifying the background color). JRiver may have to update the skin. These changes will be overwritten with the next MC update unless you introduce a new skin name for it.

Thanks.
It's likely those black drop arrows have been there for a while, nearly invisible for some dark skins. I previously customized my own versions of skin Black on Black to give them higher visibility (hence my previous instructions). It was a shock to see the improvement. I can't track the history, but...

An Even Simpler Solution:
Do not modify MC's individual built-in skins per se. Black on Black, Thunderstorm, and probably a few others use file C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 33\Data\Default Art\OptionsTree.png

Simply replace the current OptionsTree.png file in that Default Art directory with the attached file (same as I posted above). Same for MC32. I copied this file from skin Easy Grey 1P, so I'm not certain who actually wrote it. It retains the style of the current default Options Tree, except more visible lighter grey down arrows and other features replace the dark-edge ones. I've tested it with MC33.0.37 on Win11 and Win10, and MC 32.0.58 on Win10 and don't see any issues.

Decision Point:
If you are concerned about wider impacts on in-the-wild (non-built-in) custom skins which might depend on the current dark default, then modify the few affected built-ins along the lines of my Reply #9 above and leave the current ...\Default Art\OptionsTree.png alone. Otherwise follow the "Simpler Solution". The file sub-images have been designed for dark skins, but may work OK for some light skins.

Multiple posts won't help you.
Those streams also fail in VLC with "403 Forbidden" or "TLS Handshake error". This likely means they require user/password or are geo-blocked for me.

Video rotation is supported, as long as the video has the proper Orientation header.

It turns out that VLC fully supports the playback of these live streams, regardless of region or user password.
See the screenshot.

It's frustrating that a tool as good as JRiver Media Center doesn't support referrer, which is a very simple and useful feature when playing live streams.

If you set MC to use "Red October MadVR" (options->video->video mode), then you can rotate with CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+Left/Right (keys are customizable in MadVR config).
JRVR doesn't seem to support this yet - it uses the "orientation" flag present in the video to determine if it was shot in horizontal or vertical mode.

If the Orientation flag is wrong on your videos, you can use FFmpeg or other tool to correct it. Then MC and others will open it in the correct orientation by default.

Thank you very much 🙏! But this operation is very inconvenient, not intuitive and very bad user experience.JRiver Media Center better implement its own rotation function.

Code: [Select]
PowerShell> vlc.exe --http-referrer='https://cdn17.muncoday.com' 'https://cdn17.muncoday.com/data/5/13/McakJvdEEsiN6w9qXqzbDt0mOV8jzUjlj1V/McakJvdEEsiN6w9qXqzbDt0mOV8jzUjlj1V720.m3u8'
It turns out that VLC fully supports the playback of these live streams, regardless of region or user password.
See the screenshot.

Video rotation is supported, as long as the video has the proper Orientation header.
How to enable it?

Since the live stream has an expiration date, I will update the live stream link again:
Code: [Select]
https://cdn17.muncoday.com/data/5/13/McakJvdEEsiN6w9qXqzbDt0mOV8jzUjlj1V/McakJvdEEsiN6w9qXqzbDt0mOV8jzUjlj1V720.m3u8
Code: [Select]
https://il266m.cloudatacdn.com/u5kj3xjp3xf3sdgge5ys6ji3iabscv2tjwva3awuuac37uzdtpocyjkcouaa/2u3gar85ma~A1eb89i2Zt?token=k8c6hkzc1y117oubfq77sr4f&expiry=1731541947456
If JRiver Media Center can't add referrer feature, then most of the online live streams can't be played, especially the users who live in Asia Pacific region are affected by using JRiver Media Center to play live streams.

Thanks for the help on the image. We'll try this for the next build:
Changed: Updated the default options tree image to work better with dark skins.

Cheers.
Thanks for this. I suggest a modified file be considered as the default, not exactly the one I copied from skin "Easy Grey 1P" and attached in the above posts!

In two respects I prefer the logic of HPBEME's built-in skin "Dream in Blue", file ArtOptionsIcons.png. I took the liberty to rename it OptionsTree.png and attach it to this post. The important logical and visual differences are in the 7th and 8th sub-images.

Sub-image 7: The link icon is less ambiguous than the "three dots". The dots are minimalist (which I generally prefer). But the link icon indicates more clearly (at least to me) that another preexisting MC style window will open or a sub-menu with flyouts will open. I prefer the link icon.

Sub-image 8: Instead of a downward pointing open "v", the skin uses a "three line menu" icon. The open "v" is minimalist but is confusing (again, at least to me) as a single-state indicator. I rather prefer the more distinctive "three line menu" icon for the crowded Options menu.

The other 8 sub-images of the "Easy Grey 1P" file should be retained. They are more widely applicable to somewhat lighter skins, as well as dark skins, and offer a subdued contrast. I suggest the deployed file substitute a link icon (with slightly heavier box stroke) in sub-image 7 and a "three line menu" for the 8th sub-image in the previously posted file. Both should be drawn in the very clear white-grey-black style of the other 8 icons to maximize visibility on a wide range of backgrounds.

Of course I can always create a custom file for myself, and I am by no means suggesting that HPBEME change the "Dream in Blue" file. Its style meets my dark skin needs very nicely (I'm trying a reduced brightness version). But we have an opportunity here to optimize the MC default by including ideas from more than one skin.

11/15/2024: Multiple edits over the last day. It's also very important that Options sub-menus have contrasting background colors and/or outlines so they stand out clearly, which is definitely not the case for current "Black on Black". Many of the other built-in skins do a much better job in this respect. I improved my personal version of "Black on Black" by replacing its <MENU>....</MENU> code section with respective code (and the two required image files) from "Easy Grey 1P", as a start.

Apologies for so much thinking out loud. :-[

Matt since that Change was in the MC33.0.40 version for Mac that Bob released yesterday I can confirm that after doing 60 Skin Changes I could find no instances of less than adequate contrast between the "new default options tree images" and the background they are sitting on for skins that don't use their own set of "Options Tree Images".

Does anyone know how to rotate a landscape video shot by a cell phone?
In case you missed it, this thread isn't to be used for general discussion. Please read the first paragraph of the first post above.

This one has been plaguing me for weeks. It happens in 32, but I also understand it happens in 33. (I'm not sure why my recent purchase only gave me 32 instead of 33.)

I can insert a new CD for ripping, and it still recognizes the previous CD and asks me if I want to re-rip. I can reboot the laptop or restart MC, and it doesn't go away. It wasn't happening in 33 (I was able to test using a temp license) but I see that others report it in that version too.

I posted it separately here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,139583.new/topicseen.html

Can the rendering quality of subtitles be improved?
« Reply #37 on: November 17, 2024, 08:51:05 pm »

Hello friends!
Can the rendering quality of subtitles loaded from local *.srt subtitle files be improved? I found that the same *.srt subtitle files are rendered more clearly in other players.
The subtitle color is set to #FFFFFF, but it appears yellowish when rendered in the player.
